The Best Reading Buddies

Though I think of myself as a bookworm, there are certain places where I can’t bring myself to read. For example, I don’t like reading while in transit. I also don’t dare bring out a book when my nephew is around (he likes grabbing things from my hands).

When I want to enjoy a book and truly savor its every page, I prefer going to a quiet place where I can sit or lie down comfortably. These are what I consider my favorite reading buddies:

Nature

If the weather permits it, I like reading under a tree or under comfy shade. I like a windy day when reading outdoors. If indoors, I like having the rain as white noise.

Mobile phone

Having a mobile phone nearby is convenient for taking notes or looking up unfamiliar words. To keep it from distracting me, I make sure to disconnect from the internet and just reconnect when really necessary.

Fan or any cooling device

Because I don’t have much time as I used to have for leisure reading, I try my best to make any reading opportunity a comfortable and enjoyable one. One way to do this is by using whatever cooling equipment is necessary to make my room cozy.

Food

Of course. What’s an enjoyable moment without some snacks?

How about you? What do you consider as your best reading buddies?

Hooray for Reading Day!
Hooray for Reading Day! - Margery Cuyler,Arthur Howard

Hooray for Reading Day is a fabulous book for Kindergarten-2nd grade.

When Jessica reads aloud in class, she gets nervous and messes up the words. But when she goes home and reads to her dog Wiggles for practice, she is very fluent! With a big reading day coming up in her class, she practices reading every day to make sure it goes just right. Can she do it?!

After reading this book to your class, it would be fun to introduce the idea of reading buddies and have them read to stuffed animals during reading time. After all, who doesn't enjoy reading to a puppy?

Bears Make the Best Reading Buddies
Bears Make the Best Reading Buddies - Carmen Oliver,Jean-Claude Carrière

This was really quite adorable.

I'm a fan of books about why books are great (this shouldn't be a surprise, given I write a blog about how books are great...), and I am a great fan of starting that idea early. This managed to hit just the right tone--sweet and seeming quite right without verging into preachy and forceful. It felt like the children in the story wanted to read, and that was quite obvious. It wasn't defending reading itself, and by removing that from the equation, it made the idea seem more normal.

The explanations for why the bear ought to be allowed to join made me smile (and only seemed like good sense!), and I kind of wish I had a bear of my own as a child to help me on my reading journey.

The illustrations were colorful and charming, and they added very much to the book. It's definitely a good read if you're looking for something to add to a new (or hopefully new!) reader's burgeoning collection.

This book was provided to me for free via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
