Book Review: Callous (Alpha Bodyguard #6) By Sybil Bartel
Callous - Sybil Bartel

Based on how this novel started out I thought it was going to be amazing but then it just wasn't. Before the pitchforks come out let me explain! It starts off with a prologue type of situation which I was excited about. The present story starts off nicely with the heroine telling us about present hero and action-packed-problem hits and.... then proceeds to get resolved within a chapter?

I guess it was wrong of me to think that all the books in this series would follow the pattern all the other books have set. It was just weird to have the couple interact because they wanted to and not because there was a big bad after one or all of them.

Most of this author's novels feature insta-love and she's one of the few that make me not hate it. Mercy (at least in the beginning) seemed to have a good head on her shoulders. She was sassy, mouthy and knew that she would put her son above anything else. Though in the last third of the novel she got this annoying tick where she started running off when small problems would come up with Preston instead of talking to him about it even though they always made up afterword anyways.

Speaking of her son, (even though I dislike children in novels) I would have loved to have known what condition he has (or if he even has one?) that caused him to be born deaf. I can already imagine the future story he could have if/when the author ages him up.

Preston was a whole other ball game compared to the other heroes this series has featured in past books. He's broken due to happenings in his childhood and the way he's found to circumvent that is control in every aspect of his life and his surroundings. Counting and calculating is a way of life for him. If there was anyone who would benefit from talking to a therepist it would be him. Living like that is not what I would call living at all. As much as he is controlling he's also secretive. Getting personal information out of him is like pulling teeth. I would have liked to have gotten to know him more.

The ending was sweet! Considering there was no big bad (remember that ended almost before the present story began), it was just that: sweet. I'm not excited for Thomas's book to be next. The way the heroine Summer was presented didn't make me like her one bit. I'm still on the bandwagon of let's-give-Neil's-cousin/nephew(I forget who he was only that he was presented at the beginning of another character's book) a book for himself!

My Favorite Quotes:

"Bad sh*t happened in odd numbers."

"Our experiences shape us."

"Feelings are never wrong, they just are."

Book Review: Fearless (Alpha Bodyguard #5) By Sybil Bartel
Fearless (Alpha Bodyguard #5) - Sybil Bartel

You're probably getting tired of hearing me gush about most books by this author. I just feel the urge to scream out at whoever will listen about how good Sybil's books are! Her writing is improving with every book release and if you're looking for action this novel, in particular, is definitely for you!

Ty was a mystery from past books in this series. He's been portrayed as mean and rude with some glimpses of him being caring in rare instances. I liked how the author portrayed him. He's not necessarily an anti-hero but he's far from a saint. He doesn't shy away from inflicting violence if the means justify the end. That's always who his character was (even in past books) and that didn't change with his story and finding someone he could love other than his family.

I have a love/hate relationship with Ludeviene. She comes from a filthy rich family and an upbringing to match. She's been sheltered and seems to have a very overprotective father who likes to keep up appearances. The thing that I didn't love about her was her not speaking due to shock/panic. I can understand that shock and panic can make the human brain not function properly but, storywise, it caught me off guard.

I love how the author incorporated ASL (American Sign Language) in this story! If I were ever to learn a third language it would probably be sign language.

The ending was heart-shatteringly sweet. It was pain and sadness and wanting a happy future sort of moment and I can't fault the author for how she ended Ty's story. On a completely different note, I really really really really want a story on Myles (Neil's nephew)! Would it be naive of me to hope Callus is about him?

My Favorite Quotes:

"[...] I didn't equate survival or self-defense with murder."

"I didn't know how to live."

"No one had ever trusted me to take care of myself."

Book Review: Ruthless (Alpha Bodyguard #4) By Sybil Bartel
Ruthless (Alpha Bodyguard #4) - Sybil Bartel

The author's writing style does so much for her stories! I can't put my finger on what it is but it has a way of sucking me into a story and making it so enjoyable!

We met Genevieve in the Reckless novel and I was intrigued by her. She's very clumsy and rambles when she gets nervous (which is all the time). She's rather anxious because she seems to be grasping for control in most aspects of her life. I liked how when her temper would arise she would call out Sawyer on his BS. Though she should win a prize because her clumsiness and lack of luck got her into so much trouble, it's unreal!

Sawyer, on the other hand, is her opposite in most ways. He's stoic, needs control to function and doesn't like talking all that much, but he did have a sweet side that would come out here and there. Being very anxious myself I don't see how his controlling nature would help/do anything for her. They have a weird dynamic love-wise that shouldn't go together but it does anyway.

I gave up mentioning this a few books ago with this author but I liked that the hero was finally responsible enough to bring up protection and the pill. Even though the discussion was rapid-fire at best there was at least a mention of it.

This was one of the more action-packed novels in this series and I enjoyed it a lot! Sybil is getting better and better with every book she writes and I can't wait to see where she goes from here.

My Favorite Quotes:

"We get what we deserve. Remember that."

"She'd waged and won. Still standing, no training, no military support at her back, no family, no money, she'd navigated her own war zone and come out alive."

"Every second around you is a precipice I don't know how to navigate."

Book Review: Reckless (Alpha Bodyguard #3) By Sybil Bartel
Reckless - Sybil Bartel

I've said it before and I'll say it again I love the writing style and overall pace of the stories this author writes! Something just clicks for me with most of the books (with exceptions of course) I've read by her. I don't know how she did it but she made me become impartial to a trope I usually dislike in books: the insta-love/lust.

Calandra was a great character to get to know! I don't usually read books about royalty so this was a nice and strange change of pace for me. Her overall demeanor was fun to understand and watch as Tyler took down her walls layer by layer. I also loved that she questioned how instantaneous her relationship was.

Tyler has popped up in a few of this author's other stories. It was great to see him as the main character for once. He's sweet, respectful and protective. I really liked seeing him showing human emotions with him being so "alpha" and all. It was a good change of pace for the "alpha male" stereotype. I'm also very intrigued with all of his brothers. I would love a series on them in the near future!

If I'm being honest, I would have liked the stalker reveal to have been more strung along. It happened way too fast and everyone was way too conveniently there for there to have been any real stakes involved. Overall, this was a great read! I especially like how the next book is already set up!

My Favorite Quotes:

"If you let fear rule you, you're as good as dead."

"I'd lived my whole life with one foot in the oast and one in the future. I was tired of straddling that impossible line."

"Life wasn't based on merit, and justification was for the weak."
