Baden – January 11, 2022

After suffering a horrific injury that threatens to end his career, Baden Oulett is about to learn that sometimes a fresh start is just what the doctor ordered.

I worked my whole life to achieve one goal—play professional hockey. As part of the defending Cup champion Arizona Vengeance, I was living my dream until one split second decision destroyed it all. Instead of lacing up my skates and hitting the ice, I’ve spent my days in rehab and physical therapy just so I could walk again. When a coaching opportunity with the Pittsburgh Titans is presented to me, I find myself with a career I had never considered but which allows me to continue being part of the sport that I love. While my injuries are physical, the same can’t be said for the woman I rescued. Suffering from wounds that can’t be seen, Sophie Winters has withdrawn from the world in fear and guilt. I didn’t know Sophie before that fateful night and have only met her once since, but I refuse to let her face her demons alone. Determined to be a friend, I support Sophie in the only way I know how… by simply being there. Through our shared trauma, Sophie and I begin to find peace within one another. As we grow closer, what started as friendship becomes more intimate until our broken pieces become one. But can a love born of anguish endure, or will the pain of our past prove too much to overcome?

Leonid Cypkin - "Lato w Baden"
Lato w Baden - Leonid Cypkin,Robert Papieski

Zamiast własnej opinii pozwalam sobie zacytować cztery małe fragmenty z zamieszczonej na końcu książki analizy książki Susan Sontag "Z miłości do Dostojewskiego". Analizy, dodam, doskonałej i wartej przeczytania samej w sobie.

Lato w Baden stanowi rzadki i wyjątkowy typ powieści, gdzie narracja o historycznej postaci, wybitnym przedstawicielu innej epoki przeplata się z historią współczesną. Autor usiłuje zrozumieć wewnętrzny świat człowieka, którego przeznaczeniem jest wielkość i nieśmiertelność. (…)

Remains Silent - Michael Baden, Linda Ke... Remains Silent - Michael Baden, Linda Kenney Baden I must say that I was really disappointed in Baden's fictional work. I would have expected more from this book, given his writing in his non-fictional books, plus I really enjoy seeing him interviewed and such on news programs, etc. This book was really weak and amateurish though...I really had to choke it down. If I didn't need it for a challenge and it wasn't only 196 pages, I probably would have stopped reading it.

Dead Reckoning: The New Science of Catching Killers - Michael Baden,Marion Roach I belong to a book club where a member gets to pick a genre each month and we all read whatever books we want to from that genre. When I first saw the shelf for February was Science, I admit it, I groaned. Then I figured that I like thrillers, so a book on forensics might be pretty good. And I was right. Dr. Michael Baden is a forensic scientist, medical examiner, news consultant, and expert witness. He has been involved in many cases over his career, including many high profile cases. In addition, he has consulted on the forensics in such endeavors as the identification of the Romanov remains in Russia, TWA flight 800, the Thomas Jefferson paternity case, and many others. In his lectures and meetings he has come across some of the most well known people in the field of forensics including the man who teaches a class on blood spatter, the "forensic bug" guy, and Dr. Henry Lee. His chapter on Doctor Lee is especially fascinating.

Marion Roach is a contemporary non-fiction writer. In addition to this book, she has written a book about Alzheimers, and has been published in many of todays leading magazines. She is also the sister of author Margaret Roach. She has a wonderful writing style that is easy to read and really makes Micheal Baden's stories come alive. In addition, she attended many meeting with him and classes with the experts that they profile, bringing her first hand knowledge into the writing.

Between Marion Roach's writing style, and Michael Baden's experience in forensics, this book was a surprisingly easy read. Definitely a 4 star read and recommended for anyone who is interested in the science behind the thrillers that are so popular.
