Megan Erickson has steadily become one of my favorite romance authors. She crosses genre flawlessly, between MF and MM. Between New Adult and this one, Adult Romance. I was really excited for this one, since it featured Max's big brother, Cal Peyton (who first appeared in Make It Right: A Bowler University Novel). And DOUBLE my excitement because this features my favorite theme in romance: Second Chances
And guess what, this one was another winner. This woman just write things that I easily loved!!
First off, Jenna, the heroine. Gah, how I loved her!! She was just so approachable. She clearly still had strong feeling for Cal and what she did ten years ago was all for him. This is one example in which I thought the heroine SHINES and at times, way better than the hero. Most often than not, in romance, we find it easily to sympathize with the hero and criticize the heroines. Not here though. I loved Jenna through and through ... especially after that "twist" in the middle (which brought another secondary character whom I loved to read).
Cal, oh the gruff and stubborn Cal. Look, I loved him too, he could easily be my book boyfriend. But let's face it, sometimes his stubbornness could be irritating. Like he was so set to be against Jenna and himself back together. That he refused to be tied down because he felt tired of being the responsible one, whereas Cal should see that being with his family was where he exert himself the most.
I couldn't give this story higher rate because I did have issue before the 'twist'. Cal and Jenna had sex early on (well, early in my definition) and I kinda lost interest in the middle after that. I was worried that things will be dragging. Until (view spoiler). So there was a moment where I lost interest for a bit. After this character arrived, things picked up again, and it provided some heartwarming, tender loving care, between Cal, Jenna, as well as Brent and their father.
I cannot WAIT to read Brent's story next!! I am really loving the Peytons so far.
