Fireborn - Katie MacAlister Fireborn - Katie MacAlister
A shaky, quivery 2 stars, mostly because I finished it. There were moments though...

The issue really is that, it being by a romance novelist of the more...modern sort...it was maybe too character-centric and the plot more of an afterthought. Well, that and the characters in question weren't the sort that really invite you to want to read about them. That one is a failing of the author's though.

So let's see...the cast of not many and yet two too many includes...

Deo - self-absorbed rebel without a clue who we meet arguing with his dad for the sake of arguing. Since his dad is the leader of his people, and they're on a mission... You keep your disagreements private; not in front of the troops, dumbass.

Allegria - also self-absorbed. Eowen clone. Since Eowen was not exactly a favorite character in the book, and became downright embarrassing in the movie... yeah no. Whatever Allegria was meant to project came across less as a misfit than well...another rebel without a clue. Bonus, she appears to have been the author's pet as she's the only one in first person and I spent way too much time in her self-absorbed, irritating noggin. Even better, it's a hot-headed noggin incapable of reason at times.

Hallow - the only one who seems to have developed self awareness. He had his rebellion before we met him, and we meet him when he's come to the realization that sometimes earning one's keep is the better part of valor.

side character - Deo's put-upon dad who is trying to figure out how to save everyone, including his idiotic son, all the while having his character assassinated by the h and the brat.

Plot - there's a thing from another dimension trying to take over, but that's not important. Allegria's getting laid is. How do we know this? Oh...the time skips. You practically get minute by minute accountings when she and Hallow are together, and the times they aren't...are skipped.

Problems? Everything. It's supposed to be fantasy but seems to have forgotten(or is oblivious) that fantasy depends heavily on world building and plot, both of which are given token attention. You can get away with that *to a point* if you're set on Earth, and using a known (modern) location. Can't do that when your setting is a whole new world.

Will I read the next book? Maybe if it's free and I'm bored.

Review! Fire Born (The Guardian #1) Rayanne Haines!

Hello Readers! Another fine start for a new week - I visited with an awakening elemental as she discovers she'll have to trust in her new found powers and become the warrior she was meant to be. Enjoy and don't forget to add Fire Born by Rayanne Haines to your shelves!

When Alex Taleisin’s immortal DNA kicks in after a fight for her life against something not-quite-human in the YMCA parking lot, her Aunt finally lets her in on the family secret. They’re Immortal – Elementals to be precise. Only, Alex is a little something more, and until they discover what, her life is in danger.

Collum Thronus, Guardian of the Races and savage King of the Dragons has no choice but to protect Alex and find her father’s people. He made a promise and Collum always keeps his promises. Now, he needs to keep his hands off his charge.

Enter an insane grandfather, a shifter with a hidden agenda, and a witch with a shoe addiction and soon Alex is wishing for a quiet house in the hills with the dragon she’s falling for. But a battle is coming and Alex knows the only way to find her answers is to trust her powers and become the warrior she was destined to be.

The first book in this exhilarating new paranormal romance series has a hero and heroine that are beings of fire, so readers should expect to be burned as the chemistry that flows between is volcanic and the sparks start flying in every direction upon first meeting. Alex and Collum’s attraction is one thing but the relationship has emotions raging out of control as well due to the situation these strong, vibrant characters find themselves in, especially Alex is not really allowed the time it takes to digest her all new reality.

The plot is fast pace and full of exciting events and is extremely suspenseful, keeping readers from being able to put the book down at any time. This story is also a bit complex as it is at the whim of a man who is a little bit insane and the mercy of all his manipulations. This keeps the story on a twisted path of secrets, betrayals and downright hide and seek games. There is no way for readers to become bored during this explosive, thrilling and entertaining story with one sexy dragon shifter guardian and flammable heroine.

Award Winning Paranormal Romance Author, Rayanne Haines lives on the Canadian prairies with the man of her dreams, two young men, and an obsessive compulsive english bulldog named Bella.

She grew up on a small horse ranch and spent most of her youth re-enacting scenes from Anne of Green Gables to attentive audiences that included pygmy goats and roan stallions. The horses were thrilled. Her father could never figure out why it took her three hours to clean the barn.

A city girl now, things haven't changed much. She still has a fondness for mountains and rivers and all the creatures that live within them. And she still believes in Magic. Rayanne loves to write about kick-ass women and the alpha men who love them.

Virtue (Fireborn Wolves) (Volume 2) - Ge... Virtue (Fireborn Wolves) (Volume 2) - Genevieve Jack

Jason had a sex addiction but denies it. He is the youngest son of the royal family of the Firstborn pack. The addiction has started to take control of Jason’s life. Jason was almost brought to death by Nichelova who was a fae princess. This addiction could ruin the entire world not just his pack. Jason wants a one night stand every day sometimes several a day. Jason’s brother is Silas and alpha of his pack and puts Jason in Selene’s care. Selene is an an Acolyte to a Goddess and she wants to become a High Priestess. Selene is to break the curse and heal Jason’s addiction. Selene is innocent and pure and has to  stay that way and is off limits sexually. But feelings start to develop between Selene and Jason.

I didn’t really like this story. At first I didn’t care for Jason for how he treated his family when all the wanted to do was help then i realized that was the addict and started to change my opinion as the story went along. I guess I should have read more on this story before reading it all. I really don’t like to read about sexual addiction. I don’t really understand it and this book really didn’t help with that. Just my personal taste I did finish the story but found the ending predictable. I did like Selene and was happy she was helping Jason. I have to say this just wasn’t for me. I am sure there are others who will love it.

Fireborn (Keri Arthur)
Fireborn - Keri Arthur

3.5 stars

This was only my second book of Keri Arthur after Memory Zero and I found it a better experience. At least I will definitely check out the sequel.

I enjoyed the fact that this book had phoenix as main character; I don't think I've read one before. Usually I stuck with the usual vampire, weres, or witches. I liked the whole myth about phoenix, about how they were spirits with three forms (flesh, fire, bird) which made their power pretty intriguing.

HOWEVER, I thought the whole life vs. love mates kind of making a simple justification of phoenix never being able to truly be monogamists; which meant that I had to settle with one of my irks in Urban Fantasy/Paranormal romance genre -- the "everyone falls in love or at least sexually attracted/involved with the heroine". No, I'm not slut shaming Emberly -- that thought never crossed my mind. I just prefer the part about anything sexual with Jackson, Rory, or Sam to be a little less. More action, less sexual thoughts/acts *shrugs*

The mystery of Crimson Death virus and red cloaks (human or vampires infected by red plague, making them vampires but can still walk in sunlight) was a good read -- though it wasn't 100% solved by the end of this book. It did reasons for Em joining Jackson's Hellfire Investigations, while still crossing path with her ex, Sam (seriously, what is Sam's darkness??) who worked at Paranormal Investigations Team (PIT). I imagine it will be a lot more of HEAVY confrontations between Em and Sam in book #2.
