Demons of the Flame Sea (Flame Seas #2) by Jean Johnson
Untitled - Jean Johnson

Raised to understand and control advanced magics, the Fae Rii know they must be careful with the wild, abundant energies of their new desert homeland. They must also downplay the awe they inspire in the Bronze Age humans around them.

Still, they have managed to create some equilibrium between the two factions, primitive versus advanced—at least, until new outworlders arrive, tipping the scales out of balance.

Strict and power-hungry, the ruthless Efrijt take the phrase “deal with the devil” to a new level. A treaty may be possible; however, the solution proposed will in turn give birth to a new problem: A chaos that will dance its way through all three races trying to survive in the burning heat of the Flame Sea

The second book of the Flame Sea series is phenomenal. I love the balance of energies and the differences in the factions. Johnson is a brilliant creator. I love the world of the Flame Seas. I don't know she does it but its absolutely beautiful and its amazing. I can't get enough of the life and the detail on every page.

There's like this whole complicated mess of who controls what and how everyone looks at everything a certain way and how they get used to the way things are done until it gets turned upside down and changes it all for everyone.

Its interesting to see how the magic change effects everyone from the supernatural to the humans and how it expands how people have interpreted their world thus far. You can really sense as a reader what it would be like to have everything you once new not being the same anymore and how that would make you feel as a person and as a community and how as individuals they have to see things in a new light.

Its really emotional and rather beautiful. I enjoyed Demons of the Flame Sea from beginning to end.

Dawn of the Flame Sea (Flame Seas #1) by Jean Johnson
Dawn of the Flame Sea - Jean Johnson

They call themselves the Fae Rii, or Fair Traders. Elfin-like beings capable of wielding sophisticated forms of magic, they travel between universes exploring new worlds and establishing settlements for their people to live peacefully among the locals.

The humans of the White Sands tribe, refugees fleeing from powerful enemies, see the Fae as potential invaders stealing their newfound natural resources. Jintaya, the leader of the Fae travelers, manages to forge an alliance, promising to trade skills and knowledge—magical and otherwise—to build a lasting community.

But the Circle Fire Tribe has no desire to share those rich valleys and ravines with the people they’ve hunted to near extinction—or the supposed deities they worship

My Review:

I felt that Dawn was a great start to the Flame Sea series but I felt the book could have used a prequel to established the magic and history and environment before this book because that bogged down the start of the book and for a large portion of the story. This however did not put me out at all because I know how much work the author is putting into the new book and I like that it isn't taken lightly or dismissed or spread out too far so that you aren't lost on everything through the rest of the book that many authors lack or stall on. World building is Johnson's strong suit and I love that about her work. I look forward to seeing the development of the next installments.

Dawn of the Flame Sea - Jean Johnson

The Fae Rii are peaceful fair traders capable of wielding sophisticated forms of magic. The White Sands tribe see the Fae as invaders stealing their newfound natural resources. The Circle Fire Tribe has no desire to share with anyone in this enthralling new fantasy.

Jintaya, leader of the Fae promises to trade skills and knowledge to build a lasting community if the White Sands people will forge an alliance and the readers can’t help but get caught up in this fascinating tale as they work together to build a new home. This steady paced, smooth flowing plot is full of suspense, excitement and a bit of romance that holds readers hostage as the strong compelling characters draw the readers in and excitement keeps them on the edge of their seat as the Circle Fire Tribe tries to take everything for themselves.

The author has created a fascinating new world with lots of interesting elements and full of vivid details that bring it all to life and make it easy to become ensnared in the story. I found it quite fascinating to follow as both groups formed their alliance and built their new community and the magic added lots of spice to the with a few unexpected twists as well, so I can’t wait to visit Flame Seas again.
