Mixed feelings, but overall happy with this book
101 Healthy Juice Recipes for Weight Loss and Vitality: Juicing for Extreme Health and Easy Weight Loss (Detox Recipes) - Beau Norton

I'm feeling off my game today so I'm going to go through books on my Kindle alphabetically, without a care for my reading challenges.   I will, no doubt, get back to those soon. 

 

So first, why is this three stars?   I'm a little tired of recipe books that hand you a list of ingredients, and go, 'pretty much figure it out on your own.'   However, I figure it's probably easier with a juicer - and I got this book when it was free because I was interested in juicing and the recipes within a juicing recipe book.   It was frustrating to read all these delicious sounding recipes, with nothing to go on other than suggestions of juicers if you don't have one already.   (Which indicates that the other is hopeful that newbies to juicing will pick up this book, right?)

 

Anyway, I'm not sure I'm comfortable running out and buying a hundred dollar juicer knowing nothing about how to use one.  I'd assume it was simple, but who knows?   These recipes did nothing to help with that, nor did the suggestions of which juicer to use.   

 

Having said that.   Primus, I want to try these recipes now.  

 

 

They're fairly simple, mostly vegetables and fruits, along with some superfoods, herbs, and in one case honey thrown in.   The superfood section all needed to add ingredients and put through a blender, but mostly it sounds like throwing ingredients in a juicer and turning it on.  That being said, at least one star for ease of use.   The recipes are very clear - they tell you not only how much to use, either by cup, bunch, or how small/medium/large the ingredients should be, but also if they should be peeled, pitted, whole or in one case just the seeds.   (Pomegranates are in one, and I love those!)   In addition there are hints about how to spice up the juices, and make them last longer at the same time, and other assorted tips.  One of them is a quick, easy, and healthy salad dressed that I've known about for a while as my parents have done this for quite a long time.   It was kind of neat to see that in this book, though, and he gave an extra tip that I hadn't thought about and that I'm going to try in the future!

 

This is also a really quick book.   It's mostly number and name of the recipe, and then the ingredients.   I think this was about less than an half hour read.   Still, fun introduction to juicing.   I think I'll look into this a bit more now.

Quick review for a quick read. "Healthy Eating, Healthy Weight for Kids and Teens" is a very valuable guide for nutrition guidelines and healthy eating practices for kids and teens. Considering the rise in obesity and health risk factors for this age group, Jodie Shield and Mary Catherine Mullen write this guide from their respective expertise as registered dietitians. I found this especially helpful since I'm passionate about reading texts that aid in the reduction of childhood obesity and cardiovascular risk factors in this age group. The text explains the importance of evaluating BMI and how to measure/calculate it, shows strategies on how to maintain healthy eating habits (with references to ChooseMyPlate.gov), provides interactive worksheets to keep track of healthy goals and eating habits, among other useful tools and tidbits on the various food groups. I also loved that this was a guide that not only focused on eating habits for kids and teens, but also encourage an active lifestyle through physical activity.

The narrative focuses on some successful interventions as well as, at the end of the narrative, sample dietary logs and recipes featuring healthy eating alternatives (The banana nut bread one had my mouth watering certainly!)

Overall, a great guide and one I would recommend not only for parents who wish to help their children maintain a healthy eating and active lifestyle, but also for those who are interested in the fight against childhood obesity.

Overall score: 4/5 stars
