An ambitious road-novel about a woman who finds herself among the chaos
Will Rise from Ashes - Jean M. Grant

I write this review as a member of Rosie’s Book Review Team, and I freely chose to review an ARC copy of this novel.

This is an ambitious novel. The author has tried to combine a complex set of characters with a gripping plot. AJ, the protagonist of the novel, is a woman in crisis, dealing with grief, having to bring-up two young boys on her own (neither of them the ideal well-behaved easy-child that everybody dreams of, but I suspect doesn’t exist in real life. The oldest, Will, in the autistic spectrum, and Finn, whom we hear plenty about but don’t get to know as well first-hand, sounds pretty overactive and his behaviour can be also challenging at times), suffering from anxiety (and perhaps other mental health difficulties), and experiencing an almost totally crippling fear of driving. We hear her side of the story, narrated in the first person. Being a professional writer, she makes for a compelling narrator, and, although not being a mother and not sharing in her extreme circumstances I do not have much in common with her, I felt the author managed to convey well the doubts, anxieties, hesitations, guilt, and the difficulties the character experienced accepting her situation, moving through the stages of grief, and eventually giving herself (and others) a chance. Her son, Will, loves all things volcano, weather, and geology, and the author offers us his perspective of the situation (this time in the third person) that serves two purposes: on the one hand, we get a more objective outsider’s perspective of how things are (because being inside of AJ’s head all the time means her suspiciousness and paranoia are not always easy to separate from how bad things really are), and we also get an understanding of how things look like and feel for a child with high-functioning autism (although there is less emphasis on that aspect than in other books I’ve read, unsurprising if we take into consideration the many other things going on).

We are later introduced to Reid, who is a combination of knight in shining armour, love interest, and also a man haunted by issues from the past (ex-military, talks about PTSD as if he was very knowledgeable about it, and his behaviour is at times mysterious, to say the least). Although AJ is suspicious about him and it takes her a long time to give him a chance, do not worry, the novel also contains romance and an opportunity for redemption. (I don’t want to give any spoilers away, but the description is quite clear in some aspects, and this is not a mystery novel, even if there are some details about the characters that are only revealed late in the story, and eventually help us understand people and events much better).

The plot keeps the story ticking, ensuring that people who might find the self-questioning and doubts AJ has to confront a bit uncomfortable (or worry that they might slow the story) have plenty to keep them turning the pages. A major disaster is the background of the story, which once AJ decides to go searching for her son, becomes the novel equivalent of a road movie. This is not a post-apocalyptic novel, but there is evidence of research and credible details of the likely scenario and consequences of such an event are interspersed through the narrative. Thanks to Will’s interest in volcanos we get first-hand information about that side of things, and as they approach the affected area, we get an almost physical sense of what it would be like to live the aftermath of a super volcano eruption. Apart from nature, the characters have to confront many other problems: technical difficulties, robberies, attempted assaults, road blocks, lack of supplies, poor telephone lines and a break-up in communication, no running water, no access to prescription medication… A woman with a driving-phobia having to drive across half the country is enough of a challenge, but her resolution keeps getting tested, and despite her reluctance to ask for or accept help, no matter how cautious and well-prepared she thought she was, she discovers that she needs a helping hand. Although the situation is harrowing and there is almost no rest or break from it (other than some dreams of the past AJ experiences, that provide us more background information and a better understanding of where she is coming from, her moments writing the diary, and the odd detour), this is not a book that gets into the gore of the destruction in detail, and, if anything, we are so focused on the here-and-now of the story that the global picture (and the many lives lost) is somewhat diluted.

The ending is satisfying and hopeful, in marked contrast to the difficulties and hindrances experienced during the trip, and in many ways the book can be seen as a metaphor for the process the main character must go through. AJ’s whole world has shattered around her, and she has been put to the test. She realises that she is stronger than she needs, that she can ask for help, and that she is ready to —slowly— move on.

As I mentioned, I did not identify with AJ, and I am not a big fan of romance (there is also a mild and not-too-graphic sex scene, but I thought I’d warn people just in case), but the book captures well the mental processes of the main character, who is a credible and complex woman trying to do her best in very difficult circumstances. The challenges of motherhood are also compellingly told (although I have no personal knowledge of the subject), and I am sure many readers will enjoy that aspect as well. If people are looking for other books focusing on the autism side-of-things, I’d recommend a couple of books as well: the well-known The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon, from an older boy’s perspective (and if you can catch the play, it’s well-worth watching), and Keith Stuart’s A Boy Made of Blocks where the father of a child with autism is the main character.

A tour-de-force that combines a gripping plot with strong and complex characters, and a hopeful message. Recommended for readers of women’s fiction.

"Powerless" -Could you survive without it?
Powerless - Tim Washburn

I could tell from the start that I was really going to like this book. It opens with the world being hit by a massive geomagnetic solar storm that destroys the entire electrical system which is basically the foundation for everything we use to function on, on a daily basis. The story is told from multiple points of view such as doctors in a hospital, the president and his staff, scientists, pilots, and families across the U.S. and it shows you how these people are effected by the loss of power, water, food, law enforcement etc. and their fight to survive amidst the chaos. It was very enlightening and really made you think. It doesn't seem too far out there to think that it could possibly happen to us one day.

I know when  severe tornadoes devastated our area several years ago we lost power too. It was only for a couple of weeks though and it was still miserable just for that short period of time. We decided to drive north until we found a hotel in another state just to get back in our comfort zone but can you imagine not having that option to go anywhere else and having to live like that for years! They literally went from living in the 21st century to living in the 17th-18th century within a day. Just thinking about it makes me want to enroll in survival skill classes and go out and start stockpiling gas, generators, food, guns, horses and anything else I can think of.

The author does a great job though of bringing the disaster to life and really making you empathize with the characters and their individual predicaments. If you like post-apocalyptic natural disaster stories, then this is a good one!

It's the end of the trail...
Natural Disaster - Chris Owen

'Natural Disaster' is the final re-read from Jake and Tor's story. It's probably been at least a couple of years since I read these books and I really enjoyed revisiting this series. This one wasn't as angst filled as 'Bareback' but I still found it to be equally as interesting.  The sex was less frequent but definitely every bit as intense as the first book. Jake and Tor are now the ranch owners and along with adjusting to such a huge responsibility they suddenly find themselves dealing with the loss of Jake's sister whom he has only recently been reunited with, this happened in Bareback. As a result of this loss they take on the responsibility of parenting a teenager, Jake's nephew Jacob. So not as much relationship angst between Jake and Tor but several real life stressors added to the relationship for them to deal with as a couple and they do. Not without a disagreement here or there or having to do 'that damned talking thing'.

Interestingly 'Natural Disaster' also brought with it a shift in the dynamics between these two men, one that I'd forgotten about. During this story for the most part it's Tor who becomes the practical, level headed one...the voice of reason if you will. I enjoyed seeing this side of Tor. The strength of his love and commitment to Jake simply melted me and really made me feel like he was truly sorry for his transgressions that occurred in 'Bareback' and I liked seeing that follow through from the first story to this one. Unfortunately what I don't like is the follow through from this book to the next book 1 in the 'Never Too Early' series by Chris Owen and Tory Temple, but that's another story for another review.

Jake and Tor are definitely at the top of the Hot Cowboy list for me and revisiting them really has been a fun trip but now it's time to move on to other stories and maybe I'll find another cowboy or two along the way.

Aftershock - Jill Shalvis
Mission of Hope (Love Inspired Historical) - Allie Pleiter
Earthquake Baby - Amy Andrews
The Lotus Palace - Jeannie Lin
Wild: An Aftershock Novel (Volume 5) - Jill Sorenson,Stacy Boyd
A Race to Splendor - Ciji Ware
Romance: Earthquake: Love (Contemporary Romance) - Riley J. Ford,Free Romance Novels
Betting It All - Cate Masters
Hot Zone - Catherine Mann

Living in California and through many minor and major earthquake, I don't tend to think of these shakers as very romantic. I am, however, often naked when they happen. Go figure.

Here are some excellent romances that contain earthquakes!  My lists are never in any particular order.

1.  Thunderbird Falls by C.E. Murphy

It's the end of the world…

Again.

For all the bodies she's encountering, you'd think beat cop Joanne Walker works in Homicide. But no, Joanne's a reluctant shaman who last saved mankind three months ago—surely she deserves more of a break! Yet, incredibly, "Armageddon, Take Two" is mere days away.

There's not a minute to waste.

Yet when her spirit guide inexplicably disappears, Joanne needs help from other sources. Especially after she accidentally unleashes Lower World demons on Seattle. Damn. With the mother of all showdowns gathering force, it's the worst possible moment for Joanne to realize she should have learned more about controlling her powers. Or to discover she's being lied to…

2. Aftershock by Jill Shalvis

THE EARTH MOVED...LITERALLY!

If it hadn't been for the earthquake, Amber Riggs would never have made love to a perfect stranger. And no doubt about it, fire inspector Dax McCall was perfect! Who else could have taught her the meaning of passion at a time like that?

AND NOW THE AFTERSHOCK...

Still, when Amber ran into him a year later she wasn't sure how he'd react. She hadn't meant to keep the news from Dax.... But he'd been out of town, and she'd been sort of relieved. After all, how do you tell the perfect man he has a perfect baby girl with a woman he doesn't know from Eve?

3. Mission of Hope by Allie Pleiter

No one knows who he is or where he's from. But witnesses throughout San Francisco report a masked man in black is bringing supplies—and badly needed hope—to homeless earthquake survivors. Some believe that the city's gallant rescuer is a gentleman of wealth. But others whisper that he is a working-class man with courage as great as his faith. And rumor has it that one of the city's most spirited society belles is helping him against her family's wishes. What can be confirmed is that the masked messenger will need more than a miracle to escape those on his trail—and win the woman risking everything to save him….

4. Earthquake Baby by Amy Andrews

Trapped under a collapsed building, Laura Scott thought she would never survive. As the choking dust enveloped her one man kept her alive and lifted her to safety – Dr Jack Riley. That life-saving moment led to a night of unforgettable intimacy. It was as if they’d been together for ever.

Yet in the morning Laura left without a trace. It’s ten years before they meet again, but when they do Jack discovers not only how real their connection was, but also that Laura is the mother of a ten-year-old child…

5. The Lotus Palace by Jeannie Lin

It is a time of celebration in the Pingkang Li, where imperial scholars and
bureaucrats mingle with beautiful courtesans. At the center is the Lotus
Palace, home of the most exquisite courtesans in China...

Maidservant Yue-ying is not one of those beauties. Street-smart and practical,
she's content to live in the shadow of her infamous mistress-until she
meets the aristocratic playboy Bai Huang.

Bai Huang lives in a privileged world Yue-ying can barely imagine, yet alone share, but as
they are thrown together in an attempt to solve a deadly mystery, they
both start to dream of a different life. Yet Bai Huang's position means
that all she could ever be to him is his concubine-will she sacrifice
her pride to follow her heart?

6. Aftershock (Aftershock by Jill Sorenson

As an emergency paramedic, Lauren Boyer is dedicated and highly capable. Until an earthquake strikes, trapping her beneath the freeway with a group of strangers—including Iraq war veteran Garrett Wright…

Handsome and take-charge Garrett aids Lauren in her rescue efforts, even as the steely look in his eyes seems to hide dark secrets. When a gang of escaped convicts goes on the attack, Garrett's bravery makes him more than a courageous bystander to Lauren. If they can save the others before time runs out, maybe, just maybe, they can explore the fire igniting between them—if the truth about who he really is doesn't pull them apart forever….

7. A Race to Splendor by Ciji Ware

Early in 1906, the ground in San Francisco shook buildings and lives from their comfortable foundations.

Amidst rubble, corruption, and deceit, two women-young architects in a city and field ruled by men-find themselves racing the clock and each other during the rebuilding of competing hotels in the City by the Bay.

Based on meticulous research, A Race to Splendor tells the story of the audacious people of one of the world's great cities rebuilding and reinventing themselves after immense human tragedy. Filled with courage, passion, and conflict, Amelia Bradshaw's spirit will capture your imagination as she strives to redraft her life amidst the ruins with both help and hindrance from a wayward son of privilege who pulls her into worlds she'd never have known.

8. Romance: Earthquake: Love by Riley J. Ford

California girl Selma Morgan is looking for Mr. Right...or Mr. Right Now, depending on the guy. When she finds herself in a nightclub locking lips with a handsome stranger, it feels as though she may have met her future soulmate...especially when the earth moves. Or, it might be the massive earthquake that just happened! Either way, Selma finds herself on a wild dating adventure through foreshocks, aftershocks, and a whole lot of rockin' and rollin'. To complicate matters, a sexy firefighter comes to her rescue after a particularly bad aftershock, and Selma finds herself with a choice to make. Is she about to experience the "big one," and if so, is she ready for that kind of tectonic shift? Follow Selma on her hilarious yet moving adventure as she survives a series of California earthquakes...and finds a seismic love along the way.

9. Betting it All by Cate Masters

Norah Hawkins wants a new life as far from her old one as possible, but where can she ever find that chance? When a letter arrives promising her the deed to property in San Francisco, Norah packs her bags and flees the broken shards of her troubled past.

With its anything-goes atmosphere, 1906 San Francisco suits Irishman Gerard MacKenzie just fine. He loves tending bar in Norah’s saloon, and verbally sparring with the shrewd businesswoman for more privileges and work. Her beauty, wit and sass make his blood boil with need.

But disaster looms over their promising new lives when a terrible earthquake buries their dreams and threatens to shatter their future. Norah and Mac must rebuild their lives from the ruins and they’ll need each other more than ever, but can their ties to each other save them or tear them apart?

10. Hot Zone by Catherine Mann

HE'LL TAKE ANY MISSION, THE RISKIER THE BETTER...

The haunted eyes of pararescueman Hugh Franco should have been her first clue that deep pain roiled beneath the surface. But if Amelia couldn't see the damage, how could she be expected to know he'd break her heart?

SHE'LL PROVE TO BE HIS BIGGEST RISK YET...

Amelia Bailey's not the kind of girl who usually needs rescuing...but there are anything but usual circumstances.

Did I miss your favorite? Let me know!

It is often the worst of times that bind us most tightly to those we love. In these darker days, we see the essence of a person.

Here are some  great love story that take place during on in the aftermath of a flood.

1. Angel's Walk by Kathleen Creighton Free!

Army Corps of Engineers’ John Campbell Harris has no choice--to save Bakersfield, California, he has to raise the height of the local dam in record time. This will flood the homes and destroy the dreams of many on the river, including Susannah Day whose beloved family home, Angel’s Walk, sits on long-designated lake bottom.

Harris didn’t plan to fall in love with an old-fashioned, stubborn, woman-child and then betray her, but who does? As the El Nino soaked the ground, and the water rose towards Angel's Walk, Harris made a dangerous choice for redemption. Would it be enough?

2. Courting Miss Hattie by Pamela Morsi

The news spread like brush fire through the whole county when widower Ancil Drayton announced his intention to start courting Miss Hattie Colfax. She was certainly spirited and delightfully sweet natured, and she'd managed to run her family farm almost single-handedly. But wasn't a twenty-nine-year-old lady farmer too old to catch a husband?

An Irresistable Suitor.

All his life handsome, black-haired Reed Tyler had worked Miss Hattie's farm--and dreamed of one day settling down on his own piece of land with the pretty young woman he'd sworn to marry. Hattie was someone he could tell his hopes and troubles to--someone he looked on as a sister. So he thought, until the idea of Ancil Drayton calling on her made him seethe. Until the night a brotherly peck became a scorching kiss... and Reed knew nothing would bank the blaze--and that his best friend was the only woman he would ever love.

3. All That Remains by Janice Kay Johnson

Wren Fraser can think of better times to go into labor. Say, when she's not on the run, or when there's a hospital nearby. Better yet, when there's not a major flood trapping her in an abandoned house. She needs a rescue…now!

It arrives in one Alec Harper. Strong, competent and goodlooking, the detective keeps her safe and doesn't leave her side. He even takes in Wren and the baby when they have no place to go.

For a woman wanting her independence, it's shocking how quickly she settles in with Alec. The situation seems a bit too domestic. And the sizzling attraction between them is making things worse. She keeps telling herself to walk away, yet she can't. Or should that be, she doesn't want to?

4. Jezebel's Blues by Barbara Samuel

When the Jezebel River overflows her banks and tries to swallow the small town of Gideon in East Texas, Celia Moon is alone and frightened in the farmhouse she inherited from her grandmother. When a mesmerizing and troubled drifter washed up on her porch, she has no choice but to take him in. As the river rises, the pair retreat to the attic to ride out the storm—and discover a compelling attraction.

The daughter of two artists who were besotted with each other, Celia has always felt the odd woman out. She yearns to find a place she can call her own, a family of her own, a life that has some stability and meaning. Her grandmother’s farmhouse in Gideon has always represented that.

Eric fled his grim childhood in Gideon to find a life as an acclaimed blues guitarist, but that life has been taken from him, too, and he’s back in Gideon with a chip on his shoulder that hides the vast, hunger he, too, feels to find his place, his home, his life. Waiting out the storm with sunny, optimistic Celia, he wonders if maybe there’s a place in Gideon for him after all, in the arms of a woman who might know more than she thinks about acceptance.

5. Flood Zone by Dana Mentink

Mia Sandoval's friend is murdered under mysterious circumstances—and the single mother is a suspect. Her only ally is a man she isn't sure she can trust. Search and rescue worker Dallas Black has a past as harrowing as Mia's own, and the police are suspicious of them both. With no choice but to work with secretive Dallas, Mia discovers he's as complicated as the murder they're forced to investigate to clear her name. Yet as a flood ravages their small Colorado town, a killer is determined that Mia, Dallas and their evidence get swept away to a watery grave.

6. A Man Like Him by Rachel Brimble

Changing her life…again.

After two years in hiding, Angela Taylor knows her independence is worth it. As long as she can escape her past, she has everything under control. Until a flash flood hits the park where she works, and hot Chris Forrester shows up the exact moment she needs a hero.

Chris proves he can save lives—and weaken a girl's knees. But how can she make him understand that she's off-limits, that getting close to her will endanger his life? Her happiness or his safety: it shouldn't even be a choice. Because when you love someone, you protect them, no matter the cost. At least, that's what Angela keeps telling herself….

7. Rivertime by Rae Renzi

Casey Lord needs a break. Her great-on-paper boyfriend, Reed, is pressuring her to marry him—but she's not sure if he sees her merely as an asset to help his political career. A river-rafting trip in the remote wilderness provides the perfect opportunity to clear her head. Until a flash flood sweeps Casey away from her group—and straight into the arms of Jack, a mysterious man also stranded by the flooding river.

Jack won't tell Casey his last name, and her innocent questions about his life are met with evasive answers. Yet they have to trust each other to survive, and as the pair await rescue, their uneasy truce slowly blossoms into friendship—and love. They agree to keep secret whatever differences may separate them in the real world.

When rescue finally arrives, will it spell an end to their budding relationship or can they find a way to stay in RiverTime?

8. A Bird in Hand by Allison Lane

When Lord Symington tries to save a young woman from drowning he almost loses his own life, and winds up compromised—having spent the night (unconscious) with Lady Elizabeth Fosdale in a country cottage. As any honorable gentleman would, he offers her marriage, but she will have none of it. And his lordship is not quite willing to see Lady Elizabeth disappear.

9. Taken by Storm by Tamara Mataya

Leilani’s plan was simple: Return for her father’s wedding, house sit for the happy couple while they went on their honeymoon, then get the hell outta dodge. She’d thought the worst thing would be returning to the town she grew up in (and despised). She was wrong.

A flash flood hits the small town, stranding firefighter, Ryan, and a few strangers at the local bar. Worst of all, Leilani, his old high school rival – and last night’s scorching one-night-stand – is one of the people stuck in the bar. With waters rising, they need to stick together and wait for rescue.

The power grid’s knocked out, and cell phones aren’t working. When the others panic and leave, Leilani and Ryan are left alone in the dark. Fortunately, words aren’t necessary to keep the former rivals warm. But when they’re forced to leave the refuge of each other's arms, they must navigate the flood-ravaged town in order to find safe shelter.

The rising waters brought them together, but rising tempers might tear them apart.

10. In the Shadow of the Ark by Anne Provoost

When ReJana and her family reach the desert plain where the great ship is being constructed, the world has already begun to change. The waters are rising everywhere, and both people and animals are beginning to panic. This is the dramatic story of the weeks and months that follow, as the rain transforms the earth and the people come to understand the magnitude of the disaster. This is the story of one girl who stows away on the ark for love of Ham, Noah's son. This is her story of survival.
