The retractable badge or a badge in a retractable holder is quite common these days. Almost every employed person wears an identification badge and the retractable kind only makes processing easier.

It does not matter if processing means gaining entry to potato chips machine for sale a certain location, or releasing documents to an employee, or simply noting the persons work attendance  the retractable badge simply makes it easier for the person to swipe at the machine from a fair distance. There is no more need to practically kiss the wall (or the glass panel), or bend over a table fixed machine, or buy those hand held tag reading portables.As convenient as the retractable badge may be, some more enterprising minds are actually finding more unique ideas for these little tools. Some companies are finding it difficult to enforce one simple rule: employees must wear their identification badges within the premises at all times. This can be due to a lot of reasons. It can be because these badges are too bulky, too heavy or simply too troublesome to use. Some employees simply tuck it into their breast pocket or even back pocket instead. They whip out the badges when they need to. This scenario poses a lot of problems. One: employees are still not encouraged to wear their badges. Two: there is a higher probability of badges being misplaced after using. And three: there is also a higher probability of these wearing out faster because the identification badges are very often left inside the breast pocket (and thrown into the wash along with the rest of the laundry); or sat upon by its owner.In order to circumvent this problem, some companies have order custom made retractable identification badges that shift from detachable neck cords to alligator clips and yes, even to stylish looking necktie clips. Incredibly, the greater number of custom made retractable badge holders are those used for marketing purposes. Instead of focusing on larger promo items that have very little functional use, entrepreneurs are turning to retractable badges instead. These are extremely inexpensive to order, and many people do like using them because of its convenience. However, some of the snazzier designs get snapped up faster because they look great as well.In other cases, these promotional ID retractable badge holders can be of the expensive kind. Some companies have pieces made out of chrome, gold and silver. These pieces are usually given to people in the company who are in the upper echelons of the corporate ladder, to the stockholders, or even to loyal patrons of the business. It is odd, but for all this book made me cry, I laughed too, and it left me happy. It very much IS a feel good book.

For all the bleak things that the anecdotes in these letters tell you about, there is warmth and humanity underpinning them. Through bombings, gun enforced curfews, children sent away for years, captives and capturers starving alongside, and concentration camps, there are books, and there is friendship, and dignity, and courage.

I don't know that it is a perfect book, or even that the plot is that tight (what plot), but there is a bunch of lovely and strange, and even ridiculous, characters being good friends and sharing the good and the bad, all because of books and one absent woman. And that's good. It feels cathartic, and lovely. It's... restorative.

I quite enjoyed the experience and I'm glad I took the recommendation.

And hey, I got a new favorite poem, because of this first stanza quoted (and I don't usually even enjoy poetry much, but this one resonates)

IS it so small a thing
To have enjoy'd the sun,
To have lived light in the spring,
To have loved, to have thought, to have done;

This is charming all around, and it's making me all teary for the profound love of literature and forever coming back idea of it as a raft in times of darkness.

It seems to me the less he said, the more beauty he made. Do you know what sentence of his I admire the most? It is, ‘The bright day is done, and we are for the dark.’ I wish I’d known those words on the day I watched those German troops land, planeload after planeload of them—and come off ships down in the harbour! All I could think of was, Damn them, damn them, over and over again. If I could have thought the words, ‘The bright day is done, and we are for the dark,’ I’d have been consoled somehow and ready to go out and contend with circumstance—instead of my heart sinking to my shoes.

This is a lovely piece of epistolary and historical fiction that focuses on the German occupation of the (British) Channel Islands during WWII, a part of that historical time period that I knew little about.

It's also got a delightful heroine, thoughtful friendships, a simmering romance, and is basically a love letter to books as well.

Worth the read.
