Fantastic artwork
Avengers, Vol. 1 - Brian Michael Bendis

*Book source ~ Library

Kang the Conqueror has traveled from the future to beg the Avengers to go to the future and stop their children from screwing up Earth. As in big time capital A-pocalypse, screw it up. The Avengers are all like, what?! Kids?! What kids?! Anyway, the timeline is all jacked up and things from the past are coming forward and destroying shit in the present timeline. So, the Avengers Assemble, a small team, and go to the future to smack the shit out of their kids while the rest of them stay back to handle timeline clean up duty. But surprise! No, I’m not saying what the surprise is. You gotta read it to see.

Anyway, I’m not a fan of time travel. It hurts my head. Also, this is the 1st Avenger graphic novel I’ve ever read, so I’m a little out of the loop on bad guys both past and present. A bit lost there. Other than that, I love the dialogue and the artwork is fantastic. I wouldn’t be averse to picking up more of this series.

Love the artwork
Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1: Cosmic Avengers (Marvel Now) - Brian Michael Bendis *Book source ~ Library The Star-Lord’s dad has manipulated others so that he can achieve his goal: Earth is off limits. Anyone messing with Earth in any way will be arrested. But why? Who knows? I love the artwork, but the story seems kinda shaky. Is it just me, or is Star-Lord’s dad a real asshat? I don’t have much experience in the Marvel universe as far as the comics go, so I’m not sure what the deal is in this volume. I know Star-Lord is a good guy, so why would his dad be a bad guy? Anyway, I did enjoy the banter, plus I love Iron Man. And I most especially love the artwork. There are also some enjoyable short stories at the end, one each for Drax, Groot, Rocket and Gamora.

My first Guardians experience
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Prelude - Marvel Comics

*Book source ~ Library

Ok, so I’ve never seen the movie and I’ve never read any of the comics. Now, I’ve watched other Marvel movies, so I have an idea who Thanos is and the gems. But everything else is new to me. I don’t know who all the players are like Nebula, Gamora, Tivan and someone named Ronan, but I’m sure it’ll come together eventually. I only enjoyed 3 of the 7 offerings in this volume. That includes story and artwork.

For Prelude 1 & 2 and the last one, Dangerous Prey, I give 5’s to story and artwork. I love the artwork so much! It’s gorgeous! I can’t stand the artwork for the middle stories (Beware the Blood Brothers, The Power of Warlock, Rocket Raccoon and the Groot one) and the plots are meh. I can’t even tell what the actual titles are because there’s stuff written everywhere. They’re confusing and the artwork is too garish, simplistic, busy and comic-booky. Blerg.

Meh
Black Widow Volume 1: The Finely Woven Thread - Nathan Edmondson,Phil Noto

*Book source ~ Library

From Goodreads:

She may be an Avenger and an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., but the Widow has her own mission: to atone for her past as a KGB assassin. Her methods are dirty. Her heart is cold. But her work is flawless. On an undercover assignment in Russia, she finds that the Hand of God is reaching for her--and it's as merciless as its name. Outmatched by the brute force of this powerful new villain, Natasha discovers a deadly globe-spanning plot. It's a race against time, and the Widow has nowhere to turn for answers. The trail of blood and destruction will test her strength and cunning--but it may also test her faith.

I’m not enamored by the artwork and the storyline is just meh. Black Widow spends most of this graphic novel screwing up and then saying she needs to pay better attention. Over and over again. Boring. And how many times does it need to be mentioned that she feels she must atone for her past sins? Too damn many. Repetition is not your friend. I got it the first time. I’m definitely not interested in continuing this series.

It's creepy
N. - Alex Maleev,Marc Guggenheim,Stephen King

*Book source ~ Library

Ackerman’s Field. It should be a peaceful place of Nature, to sit and enjoy the view, have a picnic or toss a Frisbee about. But no. What is it about this particular place and why does it affect some people and not others? Real or delusions? Who’s brave enough to find out?

Well, this isn’t creepy at all. <insert facetious font> I don’t read Stephen King. Ever. Or watch movies (except for the bits and pieces I’ve accidentally seen over the years)  adapted from his books. Because heebie jeebies. But when I saw a graphic novel adapted from one of his short stories I thought to myself: “Self, this might be doable.” So I picked it up. The artwork is awesome. Very chilling. The story itself is eerie. I’m a bit confused by the ending, but overall this would be a decent addition to any horror aficionado’s repertoire. Especially one who likes graphic novels.
