About That Kiss by Jill Shalvis
About That Kiss - Jill Shalvis

This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life in Books.

This was great! I am really enjoying this series and this book was no exception. This is the fifth book in the Heartbreaker Bay series but it could easily be read as a stand alone since it does tell its own story. I would warn new readers to the series that you will want to read the other books in this amazing series as soon you finish this one just because you will want to spend a little more time with these amazing characters. I had a lot of fun spending time with the group and watching Joe and Kylie find their happily ever after.

Joe and Kylie are the focus of this book. I have been waiting to read Joe's story since I love his character. I really was curious about what his story was and this book did not disappoint. We get to learn a bit about Joe and Molly's history in this book and it wasn't anything I could have expected. It was great to really get to know Joe. Kylie was also a wonderful character. I thought that her past was just as interesting as Joe's. Neither Joe nor Kylie has had an ideal childhood but they are both strong individuals that have been able to move past it.

I loved Joe and Kylie together. I loved it every single time they were together in this book. The chemistry between them was intense. It wasn't just about the chemistry because they really had fun with each other. It seemed like they were both people that really needed a true friend that they could count on and they filled that role for each other. There were a few more comical moments in the story and I really enjoyed seeing them laugh together.

They mystery in the story was well done. Kylie asks Joe to help her find the wooden penguin that her grandfather gave to her. Sounds easy right? Well, it was anything but easy. This pair spend a lot of time together checking out leads and going on the occasional stake out. Things go wrong from time to time but they are both determined to figure out what is going on.

I would highly recommend this book to others. I found this book to be an absolute delight to read and I couldn't get enough of Joe and Kylie. I can't wait to watch another couple find love in Heartbreaker Bay!

I received an advance reader edition of this book from Avon Books via Edelweiss.

Initial Thoughts
Joe and Kylie. I liked them together. They both had a very interesting backstory and they seemed to really click with each other.

Review: About That Kiss by Jill Shalvis
About That Kiss - Jill Shalvis

My review cross-posted from Wit and Sin

About That Kiss is a warm, funny read that’s classic Jill Shalvis. Kylie and Joe are endearing, vibrant characters and their love story charmed my socks off. Like all the Heartbreaker Bay books, About That Kiss draws you into a wonderful world of welcoming characters, making you want to pull up a comfy chair and get lost in their stories.

Ms. Shalvis knows how to write sigh-worthy heroes, and Joe definitely fits the bill. He’s strong, protective, and his love for his family shines on the page. He had to grow up fast at a young age; his father is a Gulf War vet with severe PTSD, so as a child Joe had to be the one to ensure his family was safe and fed. Hid childhood left its mark on him, and Joe is reticent to get involved with someone long-term, which is why he tries to resist Kylie. She gets under his skin like no one else, and I loved that she knocked Joe off balance a bit. Kylie also carries some scars from her childhood, which makes her wary of opening her heart. She has hidden vulnerabilities, but I was rooting for her to take a risk and open her heart to Joe. Kylie is the kind of heroine you want to have for a friend. She’s quick, funny, kind, and an incredibly talented woodworker. She also has an utterly adorable dog who threatens to steal the show more than once. It’s clear from the start that Kylie and Joe are simply meant to be. They’ve got buckets of chemistry and their banter made me grin more than once. So while they might resist the “L” word, Joe and Kylie don’t stand a chance. Their romance is bright, sexy, and sweet – the perfect combination.

About That Kiss is the fifth full-length book in the Heartbreaker Bay series, but it can easily be read as a standalone. Kylie and Joe’s friends – all part of the Pacific Pier Building crowd – add even more humor and warmth to this story. The friendships are as important to the story as the romance, which is part of the book’s charm. Everyone is perfectly imperfect and easy to adore. I finished About That Kiss a well-satisfied reader, but I cannot wait to see what Ms. Shalvis has in store for Joe’s sister, Molly.

FTC Disclosure: I received this book for free from the author in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Chasing Christmas Eve: A Heartbreaker Bay Novel - Jill Shalvis

Colbie Albright is tired of having to run her mom and brother's lives.  All three of them are adults but ever since Colbie's father ran out on them, she has been the adult in the family.  Now that she is a best selling author, she needs a break from her life, her family and New York City.  Colbie decides to "runaway" to San Francisco, CA for a break.  Shortly after arriving, Colbie is walking through the district of Cow Hollow wanting to see the crazy famed love legend fountain when a huge dog runs into her causing her to fall into the fountain.  Guess who's walking the dog....Spencer Baldwin, one of San Francisco's top 10 most eligible bachelors!

Spencer lives a quiet, simple life.  He may be super rich from selling his company, but he has sworn off relationships after Clarissa did such a number on him.  He would rather just be alone and invent new things and hang with his best friends.  He never expected to meet a woman who has captured his interest in every way possible.  Spencer realizes that she doesn't know who he is and he finds that refreshing.  What he doesn't realize is that Colbie is actually famous too and since he doesn't know who she is, that is refreshing for her.

These two quirky people find an instant connection and decide that for the three weeks that Colbie will be in town, they will hang out.  Of course this quickly turns into much more, more than either of them ever thought could happen.  Now they must both decide if this connection is worth keeping.

I just adored both of these characters.  Spencer is my perfect type of guy.  Super smart, cute and just down right sweet and Colbie complimented him perfectly.  I loved their happy ending!

About That Kiss (Heartbreaker Bay) by Jill Shalvis
About That Kiss - Jill Shalvis

What makes reading fun is watching an author explore new directions. About That Kiss is Jill Shalvis veering into new territory, but reminding readers, she has the talent to back it up. While keeping with tradition and seducing our socks off, Joe and Kylie add some mystery to the lovable canvas of Heartbreaker Bay. What began with a kiss grew in a most intriguing way. From a scene stealing dog, to a curmudgeonly father, a flighty mother and a missing penguin, Ms. Shalvis keeps the charm while adding a hint of suspense. What I enjoy most about the crew from Heartbreaker Bay is that they show how love can build a family. Blood may not bind them but heart does.

Chasing Christmas Eve by Jill Shalvis $1.99v
Chasing Christmas Eve: A Heartbreaker Bay Novel - Jill Shalvis

Meet cute...

Run for the hills—temporarily. That’s Colbie Albright’s plan when she flees New York for San Francisco. Wrangling her crazy family by day and writing a bestselling YA fantasy series by night has taken its toll. In short, Colbie’s so over it that she’s under it. She’s also under the waters of a historic San Francisco fountain within an hour of arrival. Fortunately, the guy who fishes Colbie out has her looking forward to Christmas among strangers. But she’s pretty sure Spencer Baldwin won’t be a stranger for long.

Make merry...

Spence’s commitment to hiding from the Ghosts of Relationships Past means he doesn’t have to worry about the powerful—okay, crazy hot—chemistry he’s got with Colbie. Just because she can laugh at anything, especially herself... just because she’s gorgeous and a great listener…just because she “gets” Spence immediately doesn’t mean he won’t be able to let Colbie go. Does it?

…and hope for a miracle.

Now the clock’s ticking for Colbie and Spence: Two weeks to cut loose. Two weeks to fall hard. Two weeks to figure out how to make this Christmas last a lifetime.
