June 2018 Round - Up

Hello everyone.

I hope it was a good month for everyone, so far for me it was even though I was in a bit of a reading slump, still am but I'm slowly getting out of it... I think. Also I'm writing this post almost a week early since I have some stuff coming up and not sure if I will be able to post in  time, so I figured I get it done now ( June 25th) .

On a happy note, tomorrow (June 26th, 2018) will be the release of Iron and Magic  (The Iron Covenant)  by Ilona Andrews, a new series in the Kate Daniels world surrounding Hugh d’Ambray and Elara Harper. I'm super excited about this book and hear only good tings about it, I will however wait for my paperback before I read it ;)

I'm currently reading The Prophecy, the fourth and final book in the Titan Series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. So far I'm really enjoying but I'm sad to say there are a few editing mistakes, that can be confusing sometimes. But overall I enjoy it and I really missed Seth, Josie and friends :)

The Prophecy (A Titan Novel) (Volume 4)

After that I think I be going back to The Mime Order by Samantha Shannon, the second book in The Bone Season Series. It is still very dense but great universe but I think this one is a lot easier to read now that I understand the world more. I just wish I wouldn't have waited so long between the books.

The Mime Order (The Bone Season, #2)

I don't have any real goals for July, other than just continuing to read some of my review copies for the most part. I've been switching between ARC and books on my TBR and that seems to be working fine, I might keep that up and for every review copy I read I will read a book of my TBR.

Oh there will be a great new giveaway coming soon. Keep your eyes open for it :)

Kiersten White's Bright We Burn the third book in the The Conqueror's Saga will be released July 10.2018, I'm really looking forward to it and that is one book I must get in July for sure.

Ain’t She a Peach? by Molly Harper

An Atlanta ex-cop comes to sleepy Lake Sackett, Georgia, seeking peace and quiet—but he hasn’t bargained on falling for Frankie, the cutest coroner he’s ever met.

Frankie McCready talks to dead people. Not like a ghost whisperer or anything—but it seems rude to embalm them and not at least say hello.

Fortunately, at the McCready Family Funeral Home & Bait Shop, Frankie’s eccentricities fit right in. Lake Sackett’s embalmer and county coroner, Frankie’s goth styling and passion for nerd culture mean she’s not your typical Southern girl, but the McCreadys are hardly your typical Southern family. Led by Great-Aunt Tootie, the gambling, boozing, dog-collecting matriarch of the family, everyone looks out for one another—which usually means getting up in everyone else’s business.

Maybe that’s why Frankie is so fascinated by new sheriff Eric Linden…a recent transplant from Atlanta, he sees a homicide in every hunting accident or boat crash, which seems a little paranoid for this sleepy tourist town. What’s he so worried about? And what kind of cop can get a job with the Atlanta PD but can’t stand to look at a dead body?

Frankie has other questions that need answering first—namely, who’s behind the recent break-in attempts at the funeral home, and how can she stop them? This one really does seem like a job for the sheriff—and as Frankie and Eric do their best Scooby-Doo impressions to catch their man, they get closer to spilling some secrets they thought were buried forever.

Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli

Sixteen-year-old and not-so-openly gay Simon Spier prefers to save his drama for the school musical. But when an email falls into the wrong hands, his secret is at risk of being thrust into the spotlight. Now Simon is actually being blackmailed: if he doesn’t play wingman for class clown Martin, his sexual identity will become everyone’s business. Worse, the privacy of Blue, the pen name of the boy he’s been emailing, will be compromised.

With some messy dynamics emerging in his once tight-knit group of friends, and his email correspondence with Blue growing more flirtatious every day, Simon’s junior year has suddenly gotten all kinds of complicated. Now, change-averse Simon has to find a way to step out of his comfort zone before he’s pushed out—without alienating his friends, compromising himself, or fumbling a shot at happiness with the most confusing, adorable guy he’s never met.

The Valiant by Lesley Livingston

Fallon is the daughter of a proud Celtic king, the sister of the legendary warrior Sorcha, and the sworn enemy of Julius Caesar.

When Fallon was a child, Caesar’s armies invaded her homeland, and her beloved sister was killed in battle.

Now, on the eve of her seventeenth birthday, Fallon is eager to follow in her sister’s footsteps and earn her place in the fearsome Cantii war band. She never gets the chance.

Fallon is captured and sold to an elite training school for female gladiators—owned by none other than Julius Caesar. In a cruel twist of fate, the man who destroyed Fallon’s family might be her only hope of survival.

Now Fallon must overcome vicious rivalries and deadly fights—in and out of the arena. And perhaps the most dangerous threat of all: her forbidden yet irresistible feelings for Cai, a young Roman soldier.

*I received a free copy from the publisher and chose to leave a voluntary review. Thank you!*

When I was offered this book for review I thought it sounded interesting. And I’m happy to report that it was and even more so then I thought.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and everything about it. I enjoyed the setting, Denmark, which was a nice change of pace and I enjoyed it to learn more about it, I only been there once. I loved the characters, the bad, the good and the ugly , we get a nice mix of them and of course I really enjoyed the story which kept me glued to the page and kept me up late to finish it. I couldn’t put it down and just had to know who, where and what ;)

The pacing of the book was great most of the times there were only a few times it felt a bit too slow or maybe I was just impatient. I also should mention that while I really enjoyed the setting it also took me a couple chapters to get used to it and learn about their laws as I went a long. But it was a pretty smooth getting used to as the book just sucks you further and further into the plot.

This was my first book in this series but I think I will go and read some of the other books in the series I also will keep my eye out for future books be the authors.  If you a fan of murder mystery and thrillers I think you will enjoy this book.

I rate it 4 ★

The Hanging
The Hanging: A Thriller - Lotte Hammer, Soren Hammer

bookshelves: fraudio, danish-root, mystery-thriller, debut, published-2010, translation, autumn-2013, under-500-ratings

Read from November 30 to December 01, 2013

Narrated by Michael Page

From the description: One morning before school, two children find the naked bodies of five men hanging from the gym ceiling. The case leads detective Konrad Simonsen and his murder squad to the school janitor, who may know more about the killings than he is telling. Soon, Simonsen realizes that each of the five murdered men had a dark and terrible secret in common. And when Simonsen’s own daughter is targeted, he must race to find the culprit before his whole world is destroyed.

What a shame - the storyline is pretty neat, however it is battered flat by the lack of writing style. Alternating between arch and stilted, I was veritably cringing. This is a debut novel, the first in a projected series and would willingly encounter the next to see if any of the characters come to life.

The Hanging: A Thriller - Lotte Hammer, Soren Hammer Unlike the better chunk of Nordic Noir authors, I found myself unable to warm up to this book and the authors' writing style. I found myself frequently distracted and just bored with the story. Not sure why, it did have some pretty twisted scenes in it that I liked. I am not sure if I didn't like the way it translated or what. I simply can't put my finger on the book at this point.
