Burning Bright: Four Chanukah Love Stories - Jennifer Gracen,KK Hendin,Stacey Agdern,Megan Hart
Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race - Margot Lee Shetterly
When Dimple Met Rishi - Sandhya Menon

This weekend I am getting my Bah-Humbug self into the holiday spirit even if I need alcohol to do it. The tree is up in its place of honor (second floor landing) and lights strung; the kids just need to put the ornaments on. I'm taking the boy child out tomorrow so he can shop for the family gifts; girl child will get to do it on Monday. I am baking lots of cookies this weekend for Monday's cookie drive on base (spouses' group makes bags of homemade cookies for every Airman living in the dorms - roughly 12,000 cookies are needed).

So with what little time I have to read this weekend/upcoming week, here is what I plan to read:

1. Burning Bright: Four Chanukah Love Stories by Various Authors

Hanukkah starts on December 12th. We celebrate (kind of) on the first night.

2. Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly

For an upcoming square and for Pop Sugar. I've already seen the movie and loved it. I'm hoping some non-fiction gets me out of my DNF streak of late.

3. When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon

    Impulse borrow from the library

COYER starts next weekend, so I am trying really hard not to read off my list until then. I am seriously striking out on the books for the 16 Tasks for the Festive season challenge - I just DNF'd another book tonight.

Let Us Dream - Alyssa Cole
Unleashed - Rachel Lacey
Burning Bright: Four Chanukah Love Stories - Jennifer Gracen,KK Hendin,Stacey Agdern,Megan Hart
Roller Girl - Vanessa North
Saga Volume 4 - Brian K. Vaughan,Fiona Staples

We are heading to our first holiday party of the year (base libraries hold a joint party for staff and volunteers) tonight. Our white elephant/dirty Santa gift is the two books I bought from a local author and had signed by the author plus a cross stitched bookmark from a charity shop in town. I love playing WE/DS because you never know what you will walk away with (last year's gift was a color me calendar that the kids colored in completely on day one of their winter break from school).

I read American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang today, my first book of December. It's for a square later in the game; highly recommend to middle grade and younger young adults.

On tap for this weekend, my reading will be lots of shorts - my mind can take only so much and I want to keep my reading to relaxing levels.

1. Saga Volumes 1-4  by Brian K. Vaughn and Fiona Staples - volume 4 is for another square in the game, but I want to refresh my memory so I will just start with volume 1. That will kill an afternoon.

2. Let Us Dream by Alyssa Cole - originally published in last year's Daughters of the Revolution anthology, I picked this up when it was published as an individual novella and on sale. Romance between a suffragette (and business woman) and her new chef. It's from Alyssa Cole, so expectations are high. Reading this for a game square.

3. Unleashed (Love to the Rescue #1) by Rachel Lacey - contemporary romance with a dog rescue foster mom (and almost completely in remission cancer survivor) and a PI. Not knocking my socks off, not annoying me to the point of DNF, so I am just plodding along for now. Reading for a game square.

4. Burning Bright: Four Chanukah Stories by Various Authors - a non-Christmas holiday romance!!! Also for a game square.

5. Roller Girl (Lake Lovelace #3) by Vanessa North - I spun the dreidel and landed on this book. F/F contemporary romance. Reading as a result of the game.

Happy reading weekend everyone!

Review: Be Not Afraid by Alyssa Cole
For Love & Liberty: Untold love stories of the American Revolution - Stacey Agdern,Lena Hart,Alyssa B. Cole,Kate McMurray

Because BL's database does not have this short story as a separate entry, I had to go with the anthology (which is a shame, that was a nice cover on my Kindle edition - very patriotism raising).

I picked up this short story (roughly 60-65 Kindle "pages") on sale because the setting interested me - a historical romance set during the American Revolutionary War is hard to come by. What made me enjoy the story was the conflict - weird to write and probably read, but the conflict was historically accurate (history nerd alert!) and emotionally real.

Please note that both of the MCs were black slaves, but the epilogue shows that they had their freedom papers (along with their adopted daughter).  I did feel that Cole went a little OTT on the heroine's backstory; that was more angst than a novella/short story can fully go in on. However, Kate was kick ass heroine from the moment the reader meets her. Elijah was a great hero and I loved his talent with horses. More importantly, they were adults that talked out their differences. I love when adult MCs act like grown ups.

Honestly, I just really enjoyed a historical romance that wasn't a cookie cutter version of Regency or mail-order bride formula. Cole has a deft hand with dialogue, which is where you see the conflict between the MCs. To be honest, I felt each of the MCs reasons for choosing the side they did was well though out and true to the characters, leading me to think that if they did not end up together at the end it would have still made a good story (not a romance, but still a decent love story). I could have done without the sex scene, just because it was a short story and the scene didn't make me believe in the romance anymore than I already did. 4 stars and can't wait to read more from Alyssa Cole.

Last night, we lit the first candle for Chanukah.

Here is the prayer my family says each night.

We light these candles to celebrate the triumph of hope over fear, light over darkness, and the powerless of the powerful.

Wishing you and yours love and light.

Every year, I hope to gather more wonderful Chanukah Romances. This year's list as a some new (to the list)  and and few from last year's list as well.

My lists are never in any particular order.

1. Lighting the Flames by Sarah Wendell

Genevieve and Jeremy have known each other since they were seven, and have been summertime best friends at Camp Meira, a Jewish overnight camp in the mountains. As campers, and then as staff, their friendship was a constant, something neither wanted to change, no matter how tempting those changes might be.

Then, last year, with little warning, Jeremy left camp early. After that summer, Gen left the country on a graduate fellowship.

Now, a little over a year since they were last at Meira, Gen and Jeremy are back together to help run a special Winter Camp during Hanukkah. Any water under the bridge is frozen this time of year, and with so much left unspoken and unexplained, this week may be their chance to rekindle their friendship, or turn it into something new.

2. Revving Up The Holidays by A.S. Fenichel New!

Workaholic Isaac hasn’t been back to his hometown since his father’s funeral two years earlier, pushing his family away because of a painful secret. Hanukkah and a forced vacation lure him back to Atlanta, where he’s reunited with his two lost loves— an old motorcycle and his sister’s best friend Giada. While rediscovering his passion for both the bike and the woman, Isaac rebuilds his heart.

Giada has lost her Christmas spirit since returning home to care for her dying parents. Left alone, she struggles to return to her successful teaching career, choosing instead to stay in her hometown. Only the unexpected return of her high school crush Isaac brings any joy to the season.

The transitive nature of Isaac’s visit and Giada’s fear of abandonment keep them from sharing their whole hearts, but certainly not their bodies. Their desire for each other is hotter than the flames of a menorah and they take advantage of their limited time together by burning up the sheets. But once their secrets are revealed, their hearts will do all the thinking.

3.  Lights, Latkes, and Love by Peggy Bird

Ah, the holidays. David Shay can't get enough of the December festivities. He especially enjoys sharing his love of the season with the underprivileged children at his non-profit organization SafePlace for Children and Parents. Hannah Jenkins, on the other hand, turns into a jaded Scrooge every year on Black Friday. As manager of a large retail store, she's seen firsthand how the rampant commercialism of the holiday can bring out the worst in people.

When David's organization is the charity Hannah's boss picks for their annual donation, it falls on her to organize a huge holiday party, whether she likes it or not.

Can a nice Jewish boy—with the help of some Christmas lights, a little girl, and a latke party—teach Hannah the true meaning of the season and guarantee them both a New Year's Eve kiss to remember?

4. Season of Magic (Holiday Box Set) by Merry Holly New!

Noel Noel Noel by Merry Holly
Dumped and lonely, is it possible to find love at the local mall? Noelle thinks not, but a chance encounter with Chase Clayborne while Christmas shopping has her rethinking her rigid set of rules, as sparks flare between them.

A Cinderella Christmas by Cara Marsi
Jessica Gallo no longer believed in fairy tales or happy endings. And she certainly didn’t believe she’d find her Prince Charming at Saks Fifth Avenue. Her Fairy Godmother thought differently.

Matchmaker Matchmaker by Bobbi Lerman
With Chanukah around the corner, is there enough magic left for a matchmaker to bring Molly's cynical heart back to life.

Holiday Disaster by Vicki Batman
The week before Christmas and all is in disarray when a librarian experiences horrible plumbing issues and a Mr. Maintenance Man who isn’t nearly as jolly as Santa Clause. This Christmas is a disaster.

Yuletide Bride by Gerri Brousseau
The Dowager Duchess’s decree that her grandson must marry before Twelfth Night or relinquish his title and fortune sends him into a tail spin. Without any prospects and with only two weeks until Christmas will Stuart Nelson find himself destitute or will he find The Yuletide Bride.

5.  A Candle for a Marine by Heather Long

Tormented by the question of 'what if...'

Home for Hanukkah, Sergeant Isaac Janko has never forgotten the baby his girlfriend gave up for adoption years ago. But he didn’t realize how angry he still was....

More than time separates them....

A chance meeting at Temple brings Zehava Elbaz face-to-face with the first and only man she's ever loved. She sees a deep and hidden pain in him, one she blames herself for...

An invitation to Hanukkah brings them together....

The two must confront their pain and loss. They have only eight days to face their past, and win each other's trust, but it is a time for healing, reconciliation and miracles….

6.. Menorahs and Mistletoe by Jess Roth New!

If nothing else, Hanukkah this year will be interesting. Single dad Martin’s six-year-old daughter, Sara, is determined to get him a new “friend.” Martin isn't even sure he wants to step back into the pool, much less go out with the mall elf they met while shopping for gifts. But he’s starting to get to know the cute receptionist at work, Tim, and thinking maybe the whole dating thing isn’t such a terrible idea. Too bad things are never that simple.

7. Lit Up by Devyn Morgan New!

Has a fateful November meeting over raspberries led Rusty to Mr. Right? He and Cole have so much in common, except for that religious background thing.

And Cole loves holidays. Rusty decks out Christmas trees, while Cole lights up menorahs. It can't be that hard to plan and execute the perfect Chanukah. What could possibly go wrong?

Two men, two sets of traditions, one chance for Rusty to get it right.

Exactly what do you do with a dreidel?

8.  Burning Bright by Anne Stuart, Maggie ShayneJudith Arnold New!

"Star Light, Star Bright" by Anne Stuart

Angela McKenna is back in Crescent Cove after a painful divorce, and soon finds that Brody Jackson is also back in Crescent Cove after a financial scandal. Brody had had a crush on her when they were both teenagers, but Angela had married her childhood sweetheart and moved away. Once Brody sees Angela again, he realizes that he still has a crush on her, and Angela wonders why she was so blind when it came to Brody in the first place. Can a little Christmas magic bring Brody and Angela together?

Return of the Light" by Maggie Shayne

Dori Stewart thought she had it all - a job she loved, a great salary, and a wonderful apartment. The publishing house she worked at was acquired by a conservative publishing house, though, and she found herself fired for her religious beliefs (although the new company cleverly disguised this fact) because she was a practicing Wiccan. Dori went back to Crescent Cove, where she met Jason Farrar, her old boyfriend. She had left Jason behind years ago for the big city, but Jason had never forgotten her. In fact, he still loved her madly - but he wasn't going to get his heart broken by her again. As Dori tries to reignite her waning faith this winter solstice, will she come to the conclusion that she was meant to return to Crescent Cove because she and Jason are destined to be together?

One for Each Night" by Judith Arnold

Alana Ross is instantly attracted to big-city lawyer Jeffrey Barrett. Too bad he's in town trying to clear his uncle's name, a man Alana believes is guilty of stealing money from the school budget. Although they're adversaries, they can't deny the chemistry between them, especially as Jeffrey helps Alana prepare for hosting her first Hanukkah open house. Can Jeffrey and Alana forget the circumstances keeping them apart and focus on what could draw them together?

Three women. Three holidays. Three stories to make that time of year a lot more fun.

If singles events planner Nicki Heller thought she was confused before about what she wants from her relationship, then a blow to the head certainly isn't helping matters. The doctors have assured her family that Nicki's on the mend. But for now? Well, let's just say she's in a, uh, Hanukkoma. Trapped in the unconscious world of Menorahville, she's celebrating Hanukkah on an endless loop . . . along with a date from hell for each night.

Like everyone else in the world, Carrie Pilby used to make a lot of resolutions she didn't keep. But this New Year's it's going to be different. She's going to be different. Really. The twenty-year-old genius is determined to be less geeky and more social and has imposed a new rule for herself: leave the apartment at least twice a week. Hey, she has to start somewhere . . .

A country Christmas isn't exactly at the top of Emma Townsend's "Dear Santa" list this year. Flannels and work boots? No, thanks. She's a dignified Manhattanite now. So how did she end up back in the "winter wonderland" yet again? It's family tradition, and she can't let her parents down. This is it, though -- this is the last year she forsakes her life (and fashion) for ornaments and tree trimming and live-action nativity scenes. No matter how good-looking that guy in her parents' yard is. Wait, where'd he come from?

10.  Burning Bright: Four Chanukah Love Stories by Megan Hart, KK HendinStacey AgdernJennifer Gracen  New!

This December, take a break from dreidel spinning, gelt winning, and latke eating to experience the joy of Chanukah. When you fall in love during the Festival of Lights, the world burns a whole lot brighter.

It’s definitely not love at first sight for Amanda and her cute but mysterious new neighbor, Ben. Can a Chanukah miracle show them that getting off on the wrong foot doesn’t mean they can’t walk the same road?

Lawyers in love, Shari Cohen and Evan Sonntag are happy together. But in a moment of doubt, he pushes her away—then soon realizes he made a huge mistake. To win her back, it might take something like a Chanukah miracle.

When impulsive interior designer Molly Baker-Stein barges into Jon Adelman's apartment and his life intent on planning the best Chanukah party their building has ever seen, neither expects that together they just might discover a Home for Chanukah.

All Tamar expected from her Israel vacation was time to hang out with one of her besties and to act like a tourist, cheesy t-shirt and all, in her two favorite cities. She definitely was not expecting to fall for Avi, a handsome soldier who’s more than she ever dreamed.

Please add your Hanukkah Romance recommendations to my Goodreads list: Chanukah Romance.

Maybe next year we will have even more!

Going All In - Cassandra Carr, Isabo Kel... Going All In - Cassandra Carr, Isabo Kelly, Stacey Agdern A copy of this book was provided by the authors for an honest review at SeductiveMusings.blogspot.com.

Hedging His Bet - Cassandra Carr

This first story is the key to setting up our understanding and expectations for the world of the New York Empires, a professional hockey team full of popular athletes and the oversized personalities each of them brings to the rink. The hero in this story is Marcus Mitchell, a player for the Empires who is known for his success on the ice and the series of gorgeous models on his arm in public. The Vegas Night fundraiser isn't really his thing, but his appearance is required as an obligation to the team. His night takes a more dramatic turn when Annalise Alonso accidentally douses him with champagne glasses from her overturned tray. He might have asked for her number just to make sure she didn't get stuck with his cleaning bill, but he also wants to get to know her better, and that includes doing everything he can to make her difficult life easier.

Annalise already has more than she can handle when Marcus becomes such a big part of her life so quickly, but she soon sees that he truly cares about her and her ongoing trust in his motives and concern grows into a love they both share. It was great to see their relationship progress and how Marcus was able to show his love for her in ways that nobody had ever done for her before. I only wish that their story had been longer.

Sensuality: 3.5

Casting the Die by Isabo Kelly

The second story is about how Nathalie Mendez, a physical therapist who works with the Empires, tries to save their star goalie from being killed by an unknown assailant and in the process, finds her own true love. Alexander Seminov didn't get the nickname “The Wall” just because of his tremendous skills as a goalie. When Nathalie finally works up the nerve to let him know his life is in danger, he is determined to use this new connection as a way to get Nathalie to let him into her life in spite of her concerns about how such a relationship could affect both her job and her privacy. What he doesn't know is Nathalie is more than just a physical therapist with hands just warm enough to relax the tensest muscles. What she doesn't know is that Alexander’s resolve will not be denied and that their love is more than a match for any threat.

I loved how Isabo Kelly made me believe in everything that Nathalie was keeping a secret, and how it would all come together in an ending that was not only completely plausible but perfectly symmetrical in the context of the earlier story. Normally I’m a skeptic of paranormal elements in a contemporary story, but this one worked for me very well.

Overall: 4.5
Sensuality: 3.5

Playing Her Game by Stacey Agdern

The final story fills in the missing pieces from the other two with regard to the event at the Vegas Night fundraiser which indirectly caused Annalise’s tray to be upturned, and while it ultimately fit in well with the overall story arc, I did not like it as much as I had hoped I would

Chris Emerson is the star forward of the Empires but he’s got real issues with anger management and behaving appropriately in public. This makes him the guy all the tabloids want to follow around but it doesn't make him all that popular with anyone else. When Chris finds himself called upon to defend Melanie Gould, another notorious loudmouth and controversial romance author, from the rude threats of his teammate, he steps up to the challenge, including convincing her to spend some quiet time alone where nobody can interfere with the buzz of attraction they both feel. Playing Her Game is the story of how two strong personalities find that love doesn't have to be noisy and public to be real.

There are many reasons why Playing Her Game didn't work for me as well as the other two stories, not the least of which was the abrupt and frequent switches between the characters’ points of view, often referred to as “head-hopping”. I got mixed up more than a few times wondering who was doing what and when and had to go back and read some pages a few times to get back my bearings. There’s a lot going on in this story, and it might have benefited from some scaling back, but the overall arc gave it sufficient grounding to ensure that it was better for it to be included than not.

Overall: 3
Sensuality: 3.5

The pivotal event of “Going All In” is the New York Empires’ big Vegas Night fundraiser where three of their biggest stars each find their special woman to love, even if it’s not obvious to them at that moment. Each of the three stories take place in roughly the same period of time, and overlap during this and other events taking place during that timeframe. If it had been handled poorly, it could have ruined anticipation for each story in turn, but instead it provided context where it was needed, especially in the third one. I’m looking forward to seeing new titles from all three authors in the future.

Ratings for Going All In:

Overall: 4
Sensuality level: 3.5
