LET IT SNOW!!
There Was a Cold Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow! - Lucille Colandro,Jared Lee

This is one of the many series of books about an old lady who always swallow things and they end up coming back up at the end. This time she managed to swallow all the ingredients needed to build a snowman. This is a great read for students to have in their book boxes as they read all the other Lucille Collandro books. This is also a perfect book for winter weather and Christmas Holidays.

That old lady is at it again for Christmas time. She swallows a bell, bows, gifts, a sack, a red sleigh, and some reindeer. But she needed a sweet treat and a candy cane would do until she heard Ho Ho Ho and whistled loudly and soon by her side was Santa Clause! This is a great book to read around Christmas time. Along with the other There was an old lady who swallowed books students can look for rhyming words throughout the story. A comprehension activity for this book could be a sequencing activity. The students could write or use picture to place the events in sequential order. Another activity for writing practice would be to allow the students to come up with their own Christmas item to swallow and include a picture to present to the class. Craft & Writing Activity for Book, There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed A Bell!

That old lady is at it again just in time for Thanksgiving. The little old lady swallows a turkey, ball, hat, balloon, boat, wheels, and a horn of plenty. When she hears the marching band playing she follows them in a parade wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving Day!

This is a great book to read before Thanksgiving break to start a discussion on how everyone will celebrate Thanksgiving. A few activities to use after reading the book includes a sequencing events activity for the students to show comprehension and understanding of the story, practicing with syllables with the words that she swallowed, and placing the items she swallowed in alphabetical order.

Ms. Harris' Overview of There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly
There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly - Simms Taback

This is a great book to get your students to follow along and predict what will happen next. There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly is about an old woman who swallows all of these "things" and the story is describing a food chain. Students love this book and find it fun and engaging. It is placed at a 2.0 (2nd grade) reading level from accelerated reader leveling system. There are tons of different versions of these books for different holidays (culture). A great activity for the students is to get the students to make a timeline of what happened, first, second, .... and last.

Cute Halloween-themed revamp of "There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly". Very cute illustrations. I liked the style. I also liked the amount of detail in the illustrations. There are some rather silly rhymes on the tombstones in the cemetery. Nice balance of a little scary, but not too scary. Definitely more cute than scary.

I will say that I tend to prefer Lucille Colandro's style a little more, because the things/animals the person swallows usually come up with no ill effects. I love the silliness of the story, but also like knowing that the things/animals swallowed aren't actually hurt. The ending of this book wasn't quite as clear cut and made me a little uneasy. I can easily see my childhood mind not being able to let go of wondering whether the witch was okay or not.

Overall, good read with nice illustrations.
