Book Review: Vow of Protection by Brittany Cournoyer
Vow of Protection (Personal Protectors #1)Vow of Protection by Brittany Cournoyer
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

First time reading this author and I liked the book!

Privileged Walker Cardwell had the world at his feet - at least on the outside. His family was wealthy, his father running for reelection as governor and he worked as his dad's campaign manager. He had everything money could buy. Except he'd caught his girlfriend cheating on him with his best friend in HIS bed, his father was a verbally abusive, domineering asshole, his mother lived her world through the haze of medication and he had his own demons. But the girlfriend and his former best thing had been the straw that broke the proverbial back.

Needing to blow off steam and not able to go to the trendy, elite clubs he normally went to because, damn, his so called friends were the biggest gossips and backstabbers out there, so he ended up at a dilapidated bar called Rusty's with a bouncer who didn't know who he was and didn't care, which only added to his ire. A bunch shots of tequila later, Walker was feeling no pain and wanting to try his luck a line dancing. Luck was not on his side - he accidentally groped the girlfriend of the leader of the local biker gang and got himself beaten into oblivion.

The bouncer - Beckett - was forced to break up the fight, and take the unconscious and badly damaged governor's son to the hospital. Nephew of the bar's owner, the ubiquitous Rusty, Beckett had seen more than his share of action in his life. Ex-military, he was working for his uncle while he tried to figure out what he would do now after a medical discharge because of PTSD. But he couldn't not take care of the little twerp of a governor's son, because no one deserved the kind of beat down he'd just gotten. Meeting the twerps a-hole father made him realize that maybe the life of privilege wasn't so privileged after all.

Waking up in the hospital the next day Walker realized he may have bitten off more than he could chew with getting on the bad side of the gang and that he probably needed to hire a bodyguard - and oddly enough the bouncer from last night was his first choice. And he managed to convince Beckett to work for him just in time. A series of events made Walker realize someone really was out to get him.

Beckett and Walker strike sparks off of each other like oil and a match and when they ignite - the flames will either destroy them or make them stronger. Combined with the mystery of why Walker is being targeted by a stalker and the two have the odds stacked against them.

The book was an enjoyable read. There were some typos, a few things missed in editing, and the plot a little obvious at points; but on the whole I liked it.

New Release Reviews! The Mate & The Boss (Fire's Edge .5 & 1) Abigail Owen!

A prequel to the scorching paranormal romance, The Boss, coming September 24th, 2018.

Maddie Thompson’s life just fell down a rabbit hole. Finding out she's a dragon shifter was one thing — she never quite fit into the human world, and this new reality feels… strangely right. However, discovering the next step is to choose a mate, and if she chooses wrong she'll die, is the other side of crazy. Especially when she already left a piece of her heart with someone who didn't want it.

To say dragon enforcer Fallon Conleth was shocked when the Mating Council summoned him as a potential mate for a newly found dragon doesn’t quite cover it. A mate is rare and precious and many dragons never find theirs. Fallon isn’t sure he’s worthy of the honor, not when so many deserve it more. He’ll just go through the motions and return home alone… until he sees Maddie. The human woman he reluctantly let walk away.

Fallon already broke Maddie's heart once, but if he can't convince her that they're meant to be, she'll die... and he won't be far behind.

The Mate is a fantastic introduction to the new Fire’s Edge series by Abigail Owen. Fallon and Maddie are feisty, compelling characters that grab reader’s attention right from the start, the relationship is not an easy one as there are not only does these two have a past that is interfering, but the present and future could have deadly consequences so making a decision to move forward in a mating is suspenseful and unnerving which keeps readers holding their breath in anticipation of what will happen.

Not only the romance holds readers hostage with suspense but another dragon wants Maddie for his own and there is political unrest in the dragon world that could endanger Maddie and Fallon as well. The thrilling fast paced plot keeps readers glued to the pages as they introduced to a fascinating, energetic new world of dragon shifters with some unique elements that make these dragons quite a bit different from others. So while the story may be short, it packs quite a punch and has gotten me very excited about this new series so now I am off to read the first book right now.

Finn Conleth leads his team of enforcer dragon shifters with an iron fist and a cold heart. Every dragon seeks his destined mate, but the process to turn the woman he once thought was his killed her and devastated him. He will never risk his heart again. His team is his family now. When his body eventually gives out, he’ll leave, living his last days alone.

Delaney Hamilton moved across the country to escape the freak fires that plague her. But when another suspicious fire erupts and rapidly escalates around her, her hopes for a new life go up in smoke. She has no choice but to turn to the mysterious men who come to her aid.

Finn knows the fire is dragon-caused, which puts Delaney’s problems directly in his jurisdiction. No matter how her wounded grey eyes call to every part of him, he refuses to risk her life in the mating process.

Until another dragon threatens to claim Delaney for his own, and Finn has to sacrifice everything to keep her alive...

The Fire’s Edge series is off to a great start, not only was the prequel fantastic but the first book is as well. This fiery romance engages readers from the very first page and holds their attention throughout with bold, convincing characters that are easily connected to and their romance is sweet, full of sizzling chemistry and emotional turmoil that is quite different from other issues that couples may face. The decision to risk one’s heart after all is one that readers everywhere can relate Finn’s reasons for his reluctance to act on the sparks burning between him and Delany is an especially traumatic one and really the situation Delany finds herself in would traumatize most, so this couple is one that readers really want to get their happily ever after.

The fast paced and smooth flowing plot keeps readers on the edge of their seat with lots of thrilling suspense, exciting between dragons and nail biting anticipation. The Mate and The Boss take place simultaneously, so the events that take place in the prequel affect the characters in this story, so readers get an overall picture of the political unrest that will upset the dragon world but since this story is longer and gives more detail of this fascinating world and of course readers are introduced more of the dragons that inhabit this world, the readers are better able to understand the world and some of the motivations of the characters. Once again, I was thrilled with the new world that has sexy dragon firefighters and unique mating elements that add danger, spice and tension to matings and makes for a fascinating read, so I am looking forward to reading more books in this series.

Release Day Review! McCabe (Dark Justice #3) Jenna Ryan!
McCabe - Jenna Ryan

Rowena Connor's ex was a monster, and she'd do anything to protect her son from him. Including fake her death and sequester her son in another country. But somehow her ex figured it out. Now he's kidnapped her son and wants her dead—for real this time.

US Marshal Ryan McCabe had to leave Rowena to save her. It gutted him. But now she's dropped into his life unexpectedly, on the run from the man McCabe has been hunting for years. He still burns for her, but it's clear she definitely hasn't gotten over what he did to her. Who can blame her? But her only hope to stay alive is to trust him, dark secrets and all.

Her only hope to find her son and stay alive, is to trust US Marshal Ryan McCabe even though she hasn’t gotten over their past.

This intensely thrilling story has strong, captivating characters that grab readers’ attention and holds them hostage from the very beginning. The romance is full of obstacles, emotional turmoil, intense situations, danger and lots of heated passion. The attraction between McCabe and Rowena burns with undeniable sizzle, but the past has a strong hold on Rowena and she doesn’t know if she can forgive McCabe for what he did to her which causes some intense emotions and the readers can easily connect to their situation and their feelings in regard to what is happening not only between them but also what is happening in their world.

This thrilling and fast paced plot flows smoothly with lots of intriguing twists and turns, betrayals and exciting action as McCabe and Rowena try to unravel their enemy’s world and stop him while getting Rowena’s son back from his kidnapper. The story is a bit convoluted and readers really have to pay attention to keep up with all the twists and turns, but readers won’t have a dull moment and might find themselves biting their nails in anticipation of what might happen next.

Jenna Ryan was born in Victoria, British Columbia. After long stints in different cities across Canada, she returned home to Vancouver Island where she has lived ever since. She has had thirty-one books published in the Harlequin Intrigue series. Her ideas come from real life, and she is helped in her writing by her sister Kathy.

She enjoys reading and is a big fan of women's fiction, psychological suspense and mystery novels. She also enjoys watching classic suspense movies. She loves strong heroines, heroes with character, romance stories and a good whodunit by the fire on a rainy night.

Her heritage is a blend of English and Irish — which is probably where the gift of blarney comes from. She is unmarried, but involved with a wonderful man. She also has a little white cat named Sheena.

Whenever she is not writing, she travels as much as time and finances will allow. After North America, Europe is her favorite continent to explore, because it was in those countries that many of the myths and legends she drew upon in her early years of writing were born.

Growing up, she considered various careers and dabbled in several of them, including, after university, the travel industry, tourism, sales and modeling. Work in the fashion industry in Toronto and Montreal gave her an interesting peek into various aspects of that world. She learned that where money, power and people come together, there will always be unpredictability — an element she feels is essential to a strong mystery. Add a healthy measure of personal conflict, an intriguing setting and a spicy romance into the mix, and you have the ingredients for what she believes to be the best of all possible stories — a great romantic suspense.

Heavenly Bodyguards- Trainee in Action
Heavenly Bodyguards - Trainee in Action (Heavenly Bodyguards, #1) - Rebecca Lange
Joelle is dead; but she is just beginning to find out her purpose.  Joelle is hit by a vehicle while saving a child.  When she dies, Joelle is welcomed into heaven and immediately told that she will be serving as a guardian angel.  Joelle's trainer, Josh delivers Joelle to her first assignment, a twelve year old girl in Scotland named Hannah.  Joelle's job is to give Hannah a helping hand as she navigates life in an orphanage.  Joelle may also help Hannah get adopted into a loving home.  However, as Joelle and Josh spend time with Hannah and a potential adoptive mother, Joelle learns of evil angels that may turn her plans awry.

This is a book aimed at the Young Adult crowd with a religious leaning.  I could guess from the title that this book would involve religious figures, there was just a little too much religious ideology for me to really enjoy it.  The author makes it known from the beginning that she is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and creates Joelle as a member of the Church also.  Many tenants of the religion are placed throughout the book such as modesty and good overruling evil.  As the author's first book, some of the writing was a little clunky and I felt there were some parts that were really not necessary for the plot, like an angel that constantly hit on Joelle and did n't seem to take no for an answer.  Although the religious tones overwhelmed me a bit, I did enjoy the overall story.  Joelle's personality was strong and she changed the way guardian angels were trained. I was compelled to find out how she was able to help Hannah and untangle the mess that has befallen her and her potential adopter, Ruth.  The end was very exciting and suspenseful and carried me through.  Although I may not be quite the right audience for this book, I do believe someone in the  YA audience with a strong sense of spirituality would enjoy this book as well as the rest of the series.

Book Review of Deadly Dorian by Jocelynn Drake and Rinda Elliott
Deadly Dorian (Ward Security, #3)Deadly Dorian by Jocelynn Drake and Rinda Elliott
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

OMG where do I begin with this book? Other than Guhhhhhhhh, that is!

This book is definitely going to be one of my 'read over and over and over again' books. I've enjoyed the entire Unbreakable Bonds/Ward Security books from writers Jocelynn Drake and Rinda Elliot, some more than others. This may be one of my all time favorites. The only book to beat this is Shattered coz I love me some Snow! But Royce Karras.... oh my GAWD, Royce Karras! That man does _things_ to me! Naughty things.

In Deadly Dorian someone is trying to kill art gallery owner Mark Foster. He was 'accidentally' given peanuts in a meal his housekeeper prepared for him at home and all his epi pens had mysteriously disappeared, his heart medication had been swapped out for placebos and now someone had cut the brakes on his baby - his brand new porsche. Yup someone definitely wanted him dead and the prime suspects were related to him. His life officially sucked. To add insult to injury he had to ask Lucas Vallois for help. He and Vallois had a past and their relationship could be described as 'frenemies', but he needed help and Ward Security was the best in the biz, so that meant swallowing his pride and asking them to protect him.

Enter Royce (sigh) Karras, Ward Security bodyguard, inked bad boy with a rough past and a mangled heart that he protects more fiercely than his clients. But Royce has a type and Marc is it. which works for the protection scheme they come up with. Royce will pose as Marc's live-in boyfriend while Ward Security tries to figure out who's trying to kill the man. Neither expects the heat between them, neither can fight it. But Royce's past is darker and more deadly than Marc knows and soon he's targeted by Royce's criminal family because of his connection to Royce and the fact that he's a wealthy art dealer. So now the men have to fight for their lives on two fronts while they try and figure out if the heat between them will become an eternal flame or leave them in a pile of smoldering ashes.

This book grabbed me from the opening line. And held my attention to the point where I finally looked up at 2:46 am and went 'crap, gotta go to work in 5 hours!' then went back to finish the last few pages because I really couldn't put it down.

Drake & Elliott have a way with words that sucks you in, sinks claws into you, and doesn't let go until you find out how it all ends. The action is fast paced and fraught with tension, the love scenes are high-octane combustion that leaves you panting, the writing style is clean, crisp and makes sure you have all the description and prose you need with as little verbiage as possible. There's a reason why I one-click their books without thought, because I'm always in for a good time when I do and am left with an emotional catharsis as well as the warm fuzzies of a happily ever after.
