More confirmation that the reblogging feature needs to be reworked, from the ground up.

Unless -- question to BookLikes -- you've actually switched it off in dashboard view, but not in blog view?

Question to BrokenTune, for verification purposes: You re-reblogged the same post after I'd pointed out that I had had to edit two of the links; did it work for you from dashboard view, or did you reblog straight from blog view anyway?

Not that I've seen.

So it would mean setting up said blog before I did so.

Understood!

Leopard: Not to my knowledge, either. I'm guessing it's important to them because the site is marketed as a "Tumblr for book lovers" -- but even Tumblr had to substantially rework their reblog feature, and anyway, the reviews posted here are something materially different in nature from the average Tumblr post.
Thanks for looking into the issue, BL. I am with those who would like an opt out feature on individual posts. I also think Bark's idea of tacking comments back onto the original post, for those who decide not to opt out of reblogging, is great. At least then all conversation related to the post will remain in one place, and the original creator will be involved in the conversation.
Maybe they need to rethink their slogan.

I went to your original blog post (not the dash) to reblog.
On the "link to reviews elsewhere" suggestion: This actually is my stopgap, but it's one that I don't like to use, because I know that many people won't bother following those links. I'd much rather be able to post my reviews here without having to fear they're going to be reblogged, and thus make it easy for everyone to have a discussion on this site without having to switch back and forth.

And incidentally, even though this is my own stopgap, I don't necessarily always follow other people's links to external sites, either -- so that is one more reason why I can't possibly expect them to follow mine.

You've brought up something that is really important. Users who are here only, or primarily, for the purpose of reblogging other people's content are parasites. They add nothing of value to the site. People who want to be able to comment and participate without writing their own posts can do that without reblogging other people's intellectual property.

I guess my point is that if you find yourself, as a blogger, doing nothing but reblogging, what that means is that you don't really have an investment in the community. And while everyone has different reasons for being here, either be a lurker or be a creator, but don't be a freeloader. People should be discouraged from simply using other people's content instead of creating their own.

There's no requirement that bloggers review in order to participate on BL, and there are lots of ways to legitimately contribute. Just reblogging content shouldn't be encouraged.

This deserves its own "YES."

Another comment from MR that is just going to get an "amen" from me!
Thanks, guys. I was worried my post was too harsh. It wasn't aimed at anyone specific, and I don't want to exclude people - just to encourage community and creating. :)

Seriously? I never read FAQs (or other instruction manuals) either, so am off to take a look.

Oh crap. That section on the About page is really counter-productive to the discussion we are having.
