Happy Independence Day -- and, my Freedom and Future Library

REPOSTING FOR UPDATED READING LIST

-- I can hardly believe it's been two years since I started this.

And I hope this year's elections will contribute to undoing some of the damage done in the past four years and go some way towards restoring the U.S. to what the country used to be.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!

Books read are checked off, with the year of reading added in parentheses (and with everything read prior to 2018 just marked like that, since 2018 was the year when I came up with this project.)

Could there possibly be a better day on which to finally follow up on my Freedom and Future Library post?

Truth be told, I'd been hoping to compile this much faster, but RL threw a major spanner in the works pretty much all of last week and both of the past weekends.  But, anyway, here we are at last.

Thank you once more to everybody who contributed ideas and suggestions!  A special thank you to Knight of Angels, whom some on BookLikes may remember as Troy, and who instantly took up the baton and came up with a magnificent Freedom and Equality Library in the space of a single day, which I'm shamelessly including in mine in its entirety (as I am also including everybody else's reading recommendations, of course). -- This list contains plenty of books that are new to me, as well as a number of books (and shorter texts) that I've already read but am planning to revisit, or have been revisiting every so often already anyway.

So, here is the complete list in alphabetical order -- in the coming days, I'm planning to also break it down into topical reading lists, to make it somewhat easier to parse.  English titles of the books included in my library in another language are given in parentheses.

THE MORAL BASIS OF DEMOCRACY by Eleanor Roosevelt
The Moral Basis of Democracy - Eleanor Roosevelt,Allida M. Black,Carol Howard Merritt

The history of democracy starts this book off.  It is dry at first.  When Mrs. Roosevelt then goes into her idea of democracy and Christianity it gets much better.  I like how she corresponds how if we are living a truly Christian life we will think of the greater good of the community instead of the individual then democracy will happen because democracy is for the greater good of the community.  Democracy is where equality exists or at least a level playing field exists.  Differences in lifestyles will still exist because of people's skills, talents, and abilities but everyone has an equal chance in a democracy.  I also liked how she states that we have a way to go still (and it is just as true today as in 1940) because we think more of the individual than the community.  This is a book we all need.  It is a timely today as it was 70+ years ago.

Historical figures: Awesome ladies edition
Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised Our Nation - Cokie Roberts

This book was just what was needed to pull me out of a reading slump. Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised Our Nation by Cokie Roberts is an account of the women who supported and helped shape the development of the democratic government in the United States. While I initially thought that this would yield minimal new information considering how heavily this period of time was covered during my schooldays I discovered just how wrong (and ignorant) I was especially in regards to the women. I realized that it had never occurred to me to wonder just how long the absences of these women's husbands were during the creation of the Declaration of Independence, Constitution (including the Articles of the Confederation), and the U.S. government as a whole. Not to mention how absolutely strong-willed and informed these women were about the affairs of state (which was beneficial as they passed on the latest news to their husbands through extensive letter writing). Best couple award goes to George and Martha Washington who were the most well-adjusted and steadfast couple of the lot. Martha went everywhere George went including Valley Forge where she was instrumental in keeping the morale of the men up (and getting them to stay at all) as well as organizing other women into organized sewing groups to keep the troops clothed. Favorite woman of the many discussed was hands down Abigail Adams who not only had the keenest mind but also the sharpest tongue. She had no problem telling John where to go and letting him know that just because he was away didn't mean that the romance in their relationship needed to suffer. In fact, theirs was the most strained relationship of all as John was in high demand and for the majority of their marriage they were separated as he worked tirelessly in his work as a member of the Continental Congress and then later as the Vice President. If you, like me, love reading about confident women and relish learning new things about a slice of history you thought you had thoroughly mapped then I must point you in the direction of Founding Mothers. 10/10

PS Benjamin Franklin was the worst.

Podcast #98 is up!
Democracy: A Life - Paul Anthony Cartledge

My ninety-eighth podcast is up on the New Books Network website! In it, I interview Paul Cartledge about his history of the development of democracy in the ancient world and how it has influenced our understanding of democracy today. Enjoy!

Reading progress update: I've read 89 out of 416 pages.
Democracy: A Life - Paul Anthony Cartledge

I am just not feeling this book right now. It received a ton of praise when it was first published last year and it's all well deserved, but it contains everything that turns me off about ancient history: meticulous parsing of sources, entire paragraphs about the meaning of words, and detailing of arguments by different scholars without definite resolution. It's finally getting to the good stuff, but if I wasn't reading this for a podcast I would DNF it for a time when I was more motivated to read it.
