Review: Red Dragon (Hannibal Lecter #1) by Thomas Harris
Red Dragon - Thomas Harris

THE LEGENDARY THRILLER THAT CREATED DR HANNIBAL LECTER

Will Graham was a brilliant profiler of criminals for the FBI - until he suffered terrible injuries in the process of capturing Dr Hannibal 'the Cannibal' Lecter.

Years later, a serial killer nicknamed 'the Tooth Fairy' is massacring entire families each full moon. With the FBI desperate for progress, Will reluctantly agrees to consult. But he soon realises that he alone can't crack the case; he needs the help of the only mind even better than his own at understanding the mentalities of psychopaths.

The mind of Hannibal Lecter.

But Hannibal is playing his own twisted game from the asylum for the criminally insane. Will isn't alone in getting advice from the cannibal. So is the Tooth Fairy - the man haunted by visions of the murderous Red Dragon…

Well I wanted my scary/spooky read this month and I got it.

Not sure there is much to say about this book other than I understand now why it was such a hype and still is.  It is one hell of a a dark and twisted book and while at times I wanted to hide or throw up I loved every bit of it.

The writing I had to get used to, all the different POV were a bit confusing at once but caught on pretty fast.   Though for a book that advertised “THRILLER THAT CREATED DR HANNIBAL LECTER” we don’t get that much of him. I assume that will change in future books.

I liked Will Graham for the most part and his thinking and his head-space, what I could not really connect to was his relationship with Molly . It just felt off and odd.

Dolarhyde, oh he was a whole other category off messed up, even as we go into his really messed up childhood I didn’t know if that should be an excuse or not. But its clear early on that he has some severe issues and as the story goes on it just gets worse and we follow him coming undone more and more.

I have to say though as we get to the end or close to, I was like well that was sort of anti-climatic but then we get the nice surprise …. Oh wow

That also goes for the very end which pretty much sets us up for more Lecter, or at least I’m hoping to.

It goes without saying that this book is not for people with a weak stomach or lighthearted, and should come with all the trigger warnings there are. That being said the books is hauntingly sick minded and twisted but I loved it. Few minor things but nothing really that jumps out, the things I had a problem with the most was the POVs but that’s about it.

I rate it 4.5★

Hannibal Review
Hannibal - Thomas Harris

This book was boring. I remember that much. I also remember it took me three months to read it because of that. I wanted so badly to like Hannibal because I enjoyed Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon but sadly it fell flat. I believe my biggest problem was how overwritten it was. Superfluous detail throughout, like food porn and boring investigative techniques. It was all so very, very boring... But what the fuck do I know, right? This motherfucker is probably the best thing since tentacle porn. All's I know is I didn't like it.

Fun fact: The movie puts me to sleep, too.

As far as the final book in the series is concerned, I have this many fucks to give for Hannibal Rising: 0

In summation: What is probably a damn fine novel was ruined by an impatient twenty-something's attention span. Should I reread it? Probably. Will I? Have you seen my goddamn TBR? You're fucking funny... HAHAHAHA!!!

Final Judgment: No wonder Jodie Foster didn't come back.

Silence of the Lambs Review
The Silence of the Lambs - Thomas Harris

Retro review time!

Loved the movie, so I read the book. Liked the book enough to look into other Thomas Harris books. Read Red Dragon. Fucking loved it. And then it was all downhill after that.Hannibal was okay. Never read Hannibal Rising, and it still holds zero draw for me.

What I remember the most about Silence of the Lambs is Clarice catching some spunk to the eye. That, above all else, is my most striking memory from this book. What's worse than a surprise money shot? A surprise money shot from a psycho. Bleck!

The ending is probably the best part. Nerve-shattering fun.

Thomas Harris is so good he takes seven years to write a book. Donna Tartt and Marisha Pessl do the same. Stephen King said in On Writing that he (the next quote is paraphrased) couldn't understand why someone would only do something every seven years when they were so damn good at it. This has no bearing on this book, but I like purposeless trivia, so there you have it.

In summation: I figured I'd go back and review all these titles I read before I joined Goodreads (or before Goodreads even existed) because I wanna. Truly, that's the only reason. Because I wanna.

Final Judgment: Better than spunk in the eye.

Red Dragon Review
Red Dragon - Thomas Harris

I read Red Dragon over a decade ago, and, while I have no need to reread it (I remember every little cringe-inducing detail), it has popped up on my 17 Books for People Who Hate People Reading Challenge. So here's a review.

I don't think there's a single bad thing to be said about Red Dragon. It's one of the only thrillers that ever truly scared me. The killer and his "becoming" has stayed with me for ten-plus years, and I firmly believe it's the best book in the Hannibal Lecter series. Silence of the Lambs is tame by comparison, andHannibal left me wanting. It left me wanting so much that I refused to read the final book, Hannibal Rising.

In summation: One of the best thrillers I've read, and better than future books in the series. High recommended.

Final Judgment: Lip-smacking good.

BOOK RECOMMENDATION!!
The Silence of the Lambs - Thomas Harris

MUST READ.
MUST READ.
MUST FREAKIN' READ.

This book blew my brains away!
Even though I had seen the movie long back before reading the book, it still got to me. I loved it. If there is someone in this world who loves horror/thriller and hasn't read it yet should first, smack them self in the head and then go to their nearest bookstore or order this book online and start reading it the minute they get it. Totally worth it.

A-M-A-ZZZZ-I-N-G.

I'm out of words, just...just read it, guys!

5 Stars!
