The Spirit Thief was another random pick from the TBR. And it was a nice surprise.

The magic systems is an interplay between the magicians and the spirits they bond with and obey them. It was quite original. The ploys were not overly intricate, but that can be nice for a change.

It was a very easy read, a bit like a YA but without the seemingly mandatory romance (another plus). I am very curious to see where this series is going next.

This book was seriously entertaining. There were several main characters and all were just as fascinating as the next. I cared for each equally- with the exception of Eli whose pertinent information I not only craved but was unfortunately doled out sparingly. Miranda-the Spiritualist- was strong yet humanly flawed. We found her frequently lacking, as seen when she was reduced to worm-like status writhing in the dirt when an adversary showed his strength, yet ultimately she proved extremely impressive. Josef, who was many things but his most treasured title being warrior swordsman, was another amazing character...you'll just have to see about the rest. I could say that a lot about this book so as not to give too much away but if you are still debating whether or not to give this a shot I say go for it! It was a fun way to spend a rainy day.

I'm not a big fan of this book. It was okay, but never really grabbed me and I found it a struggle to finish reading. I didn't really like any one character more than others and Eli I found way too egotistical for my taste.

I'm pretty sure I won't be reading any more of this series. 2-1/2 stars and that's just based on my preference.

The Spirit Thief suffers a bit from first book in a series syndrome.  While I enjoyed the characters, I didn't learn much about them. While I thought the magic system and world building was original and interesting, we never delve deep enough into it's history and origins.  I ended up feeling like I read 'fantasy lite' and not the richly engaging story it had the potential to be.  I hope that as I move deeper into the series this feeling resolves itself, but at the moment I'm not hooked enough to move directly on to book 2.

I was hoping to really like this one; I enjoyed it, but it was a bit more stereotypically high fantasy than I was expecting and it never really wowed me. I do plan to read the next book or two, to see if the series as a whole delivers on the promise of what it could be.
