Broke, almost homeless, and recently fired. Those are my official reasons for answering a wanted ad for a skeevy-looking bartender gig.

It went downhill the moment they asked me to do a trial shift instead of an interview — to see if I'd mesh with their "special" clientele. I think that part went great. Their customers were complete dickheads, and I was an asshole right back. That's the definition of fitting in, right?

I expected to get thrown out on my ass. Instead, they… offered me the job?

It turns out this place isn't a bar. It's a guild. And the three cocky guys I drenched with a margarita during my trial? Yeah, they were mages. Either I'm exactly the kind of takes-no-shit bartender this guild needs, or there's a good reason no one else wants to work here.

So what's a broke girl to do? Take the job, of course — with a pay raise.

--

Note: The three mages are definitely sexy, but this series isn't a reverse harem. It's 100% fun, sassy, fast-paced urban fantasy.

Tori has no problem getting herself into trouble in every book in the Guild Codex series, but each one is a complete adventure—no cliffhanger endings.

Three Mages and a Margarita is book one in The Guild Codex: Spellbound by Annetta Marie.

This is my first taste of Author Annetta Marie. I’ve had my eye on her work since she first came on the scene. Her covers are very eye-catching and make want to take a second look.

Three Mages and a Margarita was a very entertaining and amusing listen.

Tori is our lead. She’s a twenty-one-year-old heroine who’s currently sleeping on her brothers couch while attending college and working in the serving industry. Tori doesn’t have the best of luck on keeping a job and soon she’s looking for something new. Magically she finds herself at an unusual bar and the tale that unfolds is hilarious, snarky, sweet, and fun.

We are soon introduced to three mages who are all friends/roommates and work together to collect bounties. Tori’s interaction with each one is unique and each guy plays a role in her life as a friend. There might be a possible love interest, but that’s not here nor there.

The story-line is fast-paced and enchanting. The world-building is nice. The secondary characters are all unique, interesting, and fun.

Three Mages and a Margarita unfolds nicely and is a great start to the series. I can’t wait to continue on. If your looking for an enjoyable urban fantasy to listen too then this is definitely one to check out.

Narration: Cris Dukehart is a new to me narrator. She did a fantastic job with Tori and the rest of the gang. Things moved along at a nice pace, emotions where captured, and the snark came off as fun and appealing.

Hunting Fiends for the Ill-Equipped - Annette Marie

Book source ~ Kindle Unlimited

Robin Page is a demon contractor, but she and her demon, Zylas, have an unusual deal. He protects her and she makes him baked goods. Necessity threw them together, but now they work in tandem to find a way to send Zylas home to his world. Every step they advance though they are knocked back by those who seek power any way they can get it. The closer they get to the answers they need the more dangerous it becomes for them. They need allies and they need them fast. It’s a good thing Robin belongs to the Crow & Hammer guild. Because she and Zylas are going to need her guild mates and their skills before this thing is done.

I love this series and it only gets better with each book. Robin and Zylas are a great team and as their relationship deepens it’s been fun watching Robin squirm regarding her attraction to a demon. Mmmm...taboo love is the best kind to watch when it forms.

Like the books in its sister series (Guild Codex: Spellbound), this fast-paced action-filled adventure is full of great dialogue, humor, magic, mystery, danger, and awesome characters. And a hot demon. Because Zylas is nommy. Mmmm mmmm mmmmmm.

Audio Book Review: Slaying Monsters for the Feeble (The Guild Codex: Demonized #2) By Annette Marie
Slaying Monsters for the Feeble - Annette Marie

This series is magical and I never want it to end! Please give me all the books pertaining to this series, I beg you! The world is so fascinating and well built. The characters are complex and some walk in a grey area that makes the story that much more interesting.

Robin has been withstanding everything that's been thrown at her up to this point and it's amazing she's still alive. I've never seen myself so much in a character like I do with Robin. She's a bookworm who normally likes to stick to the outskirts of groups of people. She wasn't taught any of the survival skills she needs to have in this magical world she's found herself in much to her mother's dismay. Though I still wish I had her cooking skills. It's a fascinating balance Annette Marie strikes with Robin and the world she put her in and I love it!

Zylas is amazingly intelligent while also being a jerk half the time. There are moments when he has me thinking that he actually cares and then that all goes out the window after he calls Robin stupid in his native tongue. It's an entertaining dynamic and I'm excited to see where it's heading. I've said this before and I'll say it again I can't help but want Zylas and Robin to become a couple as dysfunctional as that may turn out.

There were a lot of action-packed scenes that had me on the edge of my seat with my hands over my eyes. There were way too many close calls for comfort. The ending had a bad feeling churning in my gut and I don't know how it's all going to be ok again. At this point, I just need some assurances that everything and everyone will be ok again.

The Audio Book:

There were one or two scenes where I did get lost in dialogue because the voices were too similar. Other than that the narration was good!

Audio Book Review: The Alchemist and an Amaretto (The Guild Codex: Spellbound #5) By Annette Marie
The Alchemist and an Amaretto - Annette Marie

Unfortunately, this was the first book in this series where everything felt lukewarm until the very last chapter. That last chapter did SO much for this book and my heart. I'm so glad things got better though, but boy do I know how to pick em! I've been Team Erza since the beginning and I'm putting my foot down Annette Marie! You can't do that to Erza, you just CAN'T!

Tori was sassy as ever in this novel and I love to see how her fighting skills are improving little by little as each book gets released. Though in this novel we see her show more emotion than what is considered, at this point in the stories, normal for her. My heart was breaking right along with her because this is the moment I, as part of Team Erza, have been waiting 5 books for! Things just have to go right, they just have to!

The guys have been great companions to Tori in the magical world! I love how they each have distinct personalities and quirks. Though Aaron came off as a stuck up *ss in a few parts of this story I'm glad he was called out on his BS. Erza became a much bigger part of this story than I was anticipating and I'm both elated and terrified for the next novel.

The ending. Broke. My. Heart. We were finally getting to know Erza and things were starting to look up but then that happened and I refuse to let it come to pass. Tori has to find a way to work things out. Dare I say no matter the cost! I just need the audio book for the latest book in this series to become available already.

The Audio Book:

The narration was great as always! The voices and tones were good and distinct enough for me to not get lost in conversations between 3+ characters.

Druid Vices and a Vodka - Annette Marie

Book source ~ Kindle Unlimited

Tori Dawson is a student, a bartender, and witch. Sort of. Okay, in name only, but if it keeps her employed at the Crow and Hammer then a witch she is. As long as no one finds out about the little white lie she can stay with her guild mage friends and continue with her non-boring life. Speaking of non-boring, when Tori gets word that her frenemy, Zak, AKA The Ghost (or the Crystal Druid depending on who you talk to) is in terrible danger, of course she has to rescue him. Because once Tori gives her friendship, she’s in it until the end. Even if her friend is an asshole most of the time.

Oh man, oh man. This one will gut you down to the bone. Don’t get me wrong, it still has humor and danger and all the things I love about this series, but the ending is…holy shit. The author has really cranked it up a notch and it shows. I have no idea where my favorite characters are going from here, but I can pretty much guarantee it’s not going to be pretty. Though I have no doubt there will be no loss of humor because even in the darkest of times, we still need levity. I’m eagerly awaiting the next book in both this series and the companion one, Demonized. I love this world so much.
