Not Negotiable: A Trident Security Series Novella - Book 3.5 - Samantha Cole

This is book 3.5 in the Trident Security series.    For best understanding and enjoyment of the story itself, it helps to go in the order intended.  As always, I advise readers to read the books in a series in order.  In this case, this book is an easy standalone, I just think this series is good and can be read either way.

Parker and Shelby know one another from the exclusive club they both belong to.  When Parker brings his brother along to try to find out if he wants to be a part of the BDSM community, he causes trouble at the club and harms Shelby.  Parker is understandably furious and wants to take care of her.

Shelby and Parker both have pasts that they prefer to keep secret.  To their dismay, both of them have things that are brought to light.  Parker has made no secret that he wants to try with Shelby, and she has kept pushing him away.

Can they learn that trust is a two way street?  Is love enough?  This is a sweet and strong story.  I found the characters extremely compelling.  There are others from the series that are in the book also.  A quick, and enjoyable read.  I give this book a 3/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

Non-Negotiable
Non-Negotiable - Declan Heyse Non-Negotiable - Declan Heyse To be single, man and submissive can be very intimidating. For Aaron, he is new to the lifestyle. He tries to break the ice by going to munches and dungeons, but none of them are welcoming. In fact, he's treated poorly for the most part. To experience the D/s dynamic he's looking for, Dommes are looking for someone more experienced. And they aren't interested in loners, aka lurkers in this world.

This short story shows a glimpse into the mind of a young male exploring kink. The perspective about cliques is accurate for many kinky organizations. The nervousness and confusion Aaron experiences is also accurate and explained well. The progression of the story itself is different than many I've read and it's refreshing. Beyond this, I have some reservations.

The BDSM portrayed by Lisabeth is one which I can see in reality. Lisabeth is not the kind of dominant I would have engage in and her kink is definitely not my kink. There are so many red warning signs with her smirking opinion how the lifestyle should be, that I would not encourage a newbie like Aaron to have her as a his first experience. Honestly, from what little presented, if this was in real life, I'd expect in a year or so to find Aaron's body in the hospital or morgue. I'm not impressed with Lisabeth's "one true way". This is not to say dominants like Lisabeth doesn't exist in real life and are bad. They are just ones I'd avoid.

From a writing style, Declan is a minimalist. The story is straightforward from Aaron's perspective. There is little character development. For those who are in the lifestyle, this short story will probably make more sense. It's not a book for kinky romantics. Whilst I realise this is a fictional book, it is a contemporary setting with realistic representations. Which is why I make one last note, unless Aaron is completely physically unfit, there is a high demand in several areas in California for young male submissives looking for a Domme. This is based on a couple of female dominants in San Francisco area bemoaning the scarcity of available young male heterosexual submissives to me. This book is recommended to those who appreciate the insight of a young newbie exploring the world of kink.

Nothing Is Negotiable
Nothing Is Negotiable - Mark Bentsen Nothing Is Negotiable - Mark Bentsen The lust of avarice as so totally seized upon mankind that their wealth seems rather to possess them than they possess their wealth. Pliny the Elder

Never underestimate the power of jealousy and the power of envy to destroy. Never underestimate that. Oliver Stone

I had to double check. Really. It was absolutely imperative for me to find out if Mark Bentsen was really a first time author or if he was a well-known author writing under another name. Nope. First one. Well, will you look at that?</>

Bentsen has written a novel of suspense and mystery that can proudly stand amongst the works of the great suspense writers of today. His grasp of the written word is exceptional, drawing you into the story and refusing to let you go from the first line until the last page is turned.

To begin my paean to all things Bentsen, I must first point out the beauty of the language, as he takes you from the mountains and plains of Montana and up into the Southern Alberta plains. What first drew me to the book when it showed up as one of the daily selections offered by one of my “meet this new author” e-mails was the setting. Montana, and especially Glacier National Park, is breathtaking, allowing amazing vistas around every turn, whether it be rolling prairies or the stunning escarpments of the Rocky Mountains. I was hoping to drop myself into the landscape, and Bentsen does not disappoint, drawing mind pictures of great beauty. That, in itself, deserves a good book rating. I love books that offer me this short of “mental video” of what the characters are seeing.

The characters themselves are deeply real. Bonnie and Luke have had a hard time over the last year, as the droughts damaged their grasslands, forcing the sell off of their cattle and putting a severe strain on their marriage. But now, as financial stresses come off, they are thrilled to have Bonnie, a well-known wildlife photographer, asked to speak at a conference in the amazing Glacier National Park. A chance to grow Bonnie’s business as well as take a much deserved vacation to one of the most beautiful spots on the Earth.

What happens to Bonnie and Luke is an intense roller coaster ride of terror, as Bonnie is taken during a visit to Cardston, Alberta, and no one at the RCMP, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, believes Luke when he reports her missing. What happens next is shocking, terrifying, and kept me reading straight through. I literally couldn’t put the book down.

There is a great deal of evil in the book, the kind of evil that one person will commit against another for reasons of greed, envy, and pure heartlessness. There are also a couple of people who are truly warm and helpful, going out of their way to do the right thing. There is one storyline that runs amongst the many in the book that was somewhat of a stretch for me, but it was completely necessary to the story, and actually made me give a mean little chuckle as the main character is pulled up short by his own petard for doing what all men of a certain age are bound to do – or to at least contemplate.

The denouement is intense, and kept me flipping pages at an astonishing rate, spinning along to the end while barely breathing. Overall? This is a highly recommended thriller/mystery novel. Just remember to start it only when you have the time to block out the rest of the world until you reach the end!

P.S. - LOVE the cover!!!
