MY THOUGHTS

Best Character goes to the Antagonist...The House.  Not that I was rooting for the house...well maybe I was, a little.  Did you ever see the movie, Monster House...

...this was like that, but with seventeen-year-olds, and some mushy, gushy romance stuff.  It wasn't half bad either...and I think that surprised me because I was hesitant to read it.  Seriously, that's all you really need to know...I say read it, especially if you're in the mood for something different than your average ghost story.  Also...if you've never seen Monster House...then you should, even if you don't have kids.

FYI...As far as the romance goes...or at least as far as the characters take things in their relationship this is getting an Older YA tag from me.

MY THOUGHTS

I loved this, I had no idea it was going to go in the direction it did, and I was so into it once it did.

What starts out as a typical end-of-the-world-as-we-know-it survival story in the Yukon takes a left turn into this secret (possibly government) cover-up.  Think...Dark Angel (you know the show with Jessica Alba) with augmented humans, with super abilities, who have escaped and just want to be left alone.  Mixed with a cold unforgiving backdrop of never-ending nuclear winter, and a super-virus that has killed a large percentage of the population that the government agency is still trying to find a cure for.  I, personally, found this unputdownable.  Other readers have said they found this to be slow, even boring, but I don't get it.  I listened to this, for the most part, in one day.  If that doesn't scream compelling...I don't know what does.

The Audio was seamlessly performed by Jayme Mattler, she fit the voice of the weirdly distinct MC, perfectly.  I hope the author decides to continue with this world he has created because I really want to know where he plans to take it.  I want more Lynn & Jax.  The possibilities this could go in have me stoked.  Please don't do what Dark Angel did and leave me hanging.

Halloween Bingo ReadI
Shadowshaper - Daniel José Older

I read this for the Fear Street square.

The thing about this book is while it is very much stock urban fantasy and sometimes a bit too heavy on dialogue, the world building and characters are great.  We also do not have the heroine as the only girl who can do anything.

Enjoyable and very informative
Older Brother - Mahir Guven

A very informative story that shows to keen outsiders how complex the relationship within families can be and how destructive allegiance to an ideal can prove. Big brother is a taxi driver and everyday he dreams about the direction his life has taken and his inability to go beyond the confines of his metal coffin. Little brother, once a surgeon, now fighting in Syria for a belief he has come to accept as the true way to happiness and fulfillment. What happens when family, ambition, and belief collide is the essence of this wonderful novel. One of the best opening lines I have ever read..." Death is the only true thing, the rest is just a list of details." is followed by many insightful observations..."Muslims were shit, less than zeros in a society that teaches about equality and tolerance and respect"....."And then you just keep going up toward the next summit. It's simple. You just have to breathe a little bit sometimes to catch your breath"....."Life hangs on the word if".....Many thanks to the good people at netgalley for a gratis copy of Older Brother in return for an honest review and that is what I have written. Recommended.

MY THOUGHTS⇢

What The Woods Keep is a YA-ish Contemporary about a just-turned 18-year-old girl who just inherited her childhood home in Promise, Co. But Promise is not like other towns...it's wholly different and completely steeped in the supernatural, and our MC is irrecoverably tied to this town. With a very unique premise, a heap of mystery, and characters that I found unusual, from the very start, I was loving this...

This had my full and complete attention for about the first third of the book...unfortunately, it sort of stalled-out for me, after that. Not sure why; the best way to explain is the writing just wasn't as engaging as it was in the beginning. Then towards the end, it picked the momentum back up and finished fairly strong. I wish it was available on Audio...
