REVIEW:

Easy to read overview of the history of ancient Mesopotamia (i.e. the land between the Tigris and Euphrates + their extended territories), but probably vastly outdated by now. Includes a map, illustrations and chronology tables, but the vast number of peculiar, multi-syllable names got confusing.

“I want to know what it feels like to kiss a guy. And you've had a lot of practice, so I know you're a good kisser."

"Are you simultaneously complimenting me and calling me a whore?”

Asylum - Madeleine Roux

Horror movies are my jam, I love to be creeped out. I was pretty sure I would enjoy this book even if it was cheesy but unfortunately every element failed so spectacularly that I left the final page feeling completely underwhelmed. There was nothing truly good or truly bad about it (except maybe the photoshop), it was just... eh.

I didn't care about any of the characters. Dan reminded me of Maze Runner's Thomas, being a perfectly bland American kid that has no defining traits. Abby was just nice and liked art. Jordan, the token gay, was like every man in this book - for some reason prone to uncontrollable fits of rage. What was with that?

The found photograph thing... perhaps some photographs were indeed found but the big gimmick about this book was so poorly photoshopped it cheapened the book. Chances are, if you think of found photographs you think of Ransom Riggs, who has an incredible collection. These photographs just looked like a 5 minute stock image search.

The payoff was not worth it, very predictable and didn't leave me feeling satisfied. A cliffhanger, some major questions were not answered, presumably left for future books. Which I will not be reading because I already know in advance that I'll end up rating them down.

“Have you talked to him since you left?”

Kelly shook his head.

“Did you call me because you needed to vent, or because you want advice?”

“Advice, please.”

“Okay. Get your head out of your ass and call your boyfriend.”

Kelly snorted.”

“...he had no doubt that he knew who Ty was now, inside and out. He knew every one of Ty's quirks and weak spots and favorite things. He knew what Ty found funny and what annoyed him. He knew what would break his heart. He knew how to touch him to drive him wild, and when to back off when Ty was having a bad day. He knew that Ty was kind and loyal and funny, that he had a deep sense of honor and righteousness. He knew that Ty would die to save a stranger, and kill to save a friend. That was the type of man he was.”
