Beyond Belief
Beyond Belief: My Secret Life Inside Scientology and My Harrowing Escape - Jenna Miscavige Hill,Sandy Rustin,Lisa Pulitzer

A few things I believe about Scientology:

1. L. Ron Hubbard was a con man and this was the ultimate con. He laughed all the way to the bank.

2. Dave Miscavige is an egomaniac and he beats his employees.

3. Dave's wife has been missing for over a decade, only heard from through a lawyer, and I'm pretty sure she's dead.

4. I feel really bad for people that actually believe in this "religion". And that's coming from someone who believes in the invisible sky daddy.

Jenna's story was so awful that at times it was hard to believe. But then you look up stories of people that escaped this cult and you learn it's an all-too-common tale. From working like a mule her whole childhood to having no true education to the constant paranoia that is the self-policing of Scientology, it was one huge nightmare. I mean, just saying you wanted to call the police was enough to get you a High Crime. A High Crime! They could beat you senseless (which they have done before) and if you say you are calling the authorities, you become the enemy.

I'm glad Jenna escaped. I was disappointed her husband wasn't so easy to convince to leave, but I am happy he did eventually go with her. I think books like this need to be shared so that others do not fall prey to cults. As Jenna herself said, Scientology may say to think for yourself, but it encourages the opposite. Brainwashing at its finest.

This is just my face
This Is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare - Gabourey Sidibe

I apparently have a lot in common with Gabourey. I, too, have crippling anxiety, depression, had bariatric surgery, recovered from an eating disorder, and went through my parents' divorce. I'm also too funny for my own good and tend to offend others with my humor.

Read this book. She's THE BOMB, to quote Obama.

I Feel Happy Happy Happy
High Voltage - Karen Marie Moning

I am in my happy place. Dani, the woman has gone through some massive trials and made some huge transitions. In the beginning it was confusing, to see a young girl suffer so and be seen as more in the future. I admit I did not like young Dani, she was a thorn to me in the story. Oh there was some serious backlash towards Ms. Moning, speculations based on her age, before the tale was finished being told. If only they'd waited they would have seen this beautiful, wonderfully magical woman finally grab ahold of her red threads and become what she was ment to be. The truth of why this obsession was there made me jump and scream "YEH!" I'm not going to spoil it for anyone, you don't need to know more.
Another great book from Ms. Moning. She continues to be one of my top 5 authors, one I re-read from often. I can not wait for her next work.. Bravo Ms. Moning, you rock !

Artemis
Artemis: A Novel - Andy Weir

I have no idea quite how to rate this book so I'm going with 3.5 stars. My first impulse was 4 because I thoroughly enjoyed it, but then I finished it, sat back and actually thought. Most of the plot wouldn't have happened if the main character Jazz hadn't been such a petulant asshole, and pretty much everything is her fault. It's hard to feel sympathy for those kinds of characters, the ones that keep making terrible life choices over and over and never seem to learn. And then in the end get away Scott free. Talk about maddening.

But the writing was well done, the plot moved along at nice clip, and the science seemed sound. Not too much over the top like in the original Jurassic Park books where I wanted to gouge out my eyes every time Malcolm talked. I just wish Weir had dialed it down on the bitch scale a bit because Jazz damn near ruined everything and seemed to think she was entitled to no punishment. Talk about arrogant.

P.S. early in my marriage we had a black pug named Artemis. He was a needy shit but we loved him.
