Review:The Heart of Betrayal(The Remnant Chronicles #2)by Mary E. Pearson
The Heart of Betrayal (The Remnant Chronicles) - Mary E. Pearson

Held captive in the barbarian kingdom of Venda, Lia and Rafe have little chance of escape. Desperate to save Lia's life, her erstwhile assassin, Kaden, has told the Vendan Komizar that she has the gift, and the Komizar's interest in Lia is greater than anyone could have foreseen.

Meanwhile, nothing is straightforward: There's Rafe, who lied to Lia but has sacrificed his freedom to protect her; Kaden, who meant to assassinate her but has now saved her life; and the Vendans, whom Lia always believed to be savages. Now that she lives among them, however, she realizes that may be far from the truth. Wrestling with her upbringing, her gift, and her sense of self, Lia must make powerful choices that will affect her country... and her own destiny.

Well that was interesting, It took me way to loon to finish this book , I think it has something to do with the hate/love relationship I had with this book.

On the one hand I really liked the story or maybe the potential behind the story. I did like the writing and I think that was one of the things why I kept reading this book.  On the other hand there were so many things that made no sense to me or even the story. I thought given the situation and the synopsis we will get more action, but we didn’t, what we did get was a lot of talking, sneaking around ,playing mind games and oogling each other.. Everyone was playing a game, I liked that part that I never knew what really is going to happen…. For the most part anyway.

But  there were some other things that made no sense to me … first of they keep saying how the Vendans take no prisoner. But she is the one they take and not only her but also the Prince, who plays his own little game and again is not a “prince”. Anyway… she is their prisoner, but yet , she gets around everywhere , first sneaking then almost openly . She gets into places she shouldn’t have and always fools the guards, which also made no sense, since they knew her face.

That alone was weird enough, but then she is supposed to be the enemy swine, that everyone hates but of course with the exception a very few, everyone likes her and even helps her out.

Then to top of my annoyance list … the big bad,the villain of this story also seems to be falling for her…… like the two others were not enough.

Overall I liked some things and the story and the end was interesting and I kind of want to see where it goes from here on, but I’m not sure when if ever …really.

I liked Lia fir the most part but Rafe and Kaden I couldn’t not really connect to even worse in this book where I thought I actually get to know more about them and will finally be able to connect and care about them but that never really happened.

I rate this book 2.5★

Vital Temptations: A Heart's Betrayal - ... Vital Temptations: A Heart's Betrayal - K.L. Lewis

VITAL TEMPTATIONS
Story line sounded interesting as she will put love on hold and it's based in Seattle.
Bethany and her friend are gonna head out for the Greek performance...they bump into some men and she ends up finding him sitting next to her in the seminar the next day, Brent.
She's a resident at the WA hospital and she is trying to get over her ex boyfriend. They meet often and she gets advice from her roommate, Danielle about dating.
Love hearing of the Seattle places they've frequented-we long to go back, wish we could go more often than once a year to visit the kids.
They become more than friends and hot steamy sex scenes as they learn more about one another. Her friend Caleb takes her for a ride and she is able to see Brent with another woman and she's so hurt...
She recalls her childhood and when her mother was on the floor crying her eyes out because her father was seeing many other women. She finds out the truth about Brent and it hit her like a ton of bricks...
Bethany still has her career to concentrate on and new relationships to discover. Brent still haunts her no matter where he relocates.
Enjoyed the other travel available and the details of  a new place. Very detailed descriptions of the pediatric doctoring.
When she becomes pregnant she has to make the right choice and there are so many ways it could go. Surprise ending for many.
Although there are just a handful of characters it's easy to keep them straight as people they work with come in and out of their lives.
Enjoyed the book, travel, learning a bit about the pediatric career and the romance.
I received this book from Story Cartel in exchange for my honest review

The Heart of Betrayal (The Remnant Chronicles) - Mary E. Pearson
I received a copy of this book from Book Riot.

I am going to start this by saying I read this without having read the first book, which is something that I really do not recommend. With some book series, you can jump in whenever, and you miss some stuff, but for the most part you can get along. This book is not one of those. There were a lot of characters, places, and relationships that I had no background for which made the book harder to read. I looked up information I needed to know, but still feel like I missed out on important details having started with book two.

With that in mind, it took me a long time to get into this book. I found the first half of the book rather dull and Lia's character really immature. This series seems to follow the standard formula for young adult books: a "special" main character who in reality isn't all that special, a love triangle (or whatever shape this ends up being), and that strange phenomenon where every man falls hopelessly in love with or is strongly attracted to the "special" female lead. The first half of this book didn't really seem to go anywhere and I was left waiting around for something interesting to happen.

However, after the first 250 or so pages, the plot actually seems to start. Once the action gets going, the book is pretty interesting, despite the whole love triangle situation. Lia becomes a little more palatable, mostly because enough was happening around her that I could ignore most of her irritating remarks. But she also does seem a little more active the second half, not just sitting around thinking about Kaden and Rafe. She makes calculated choices and actually does things to further the plot, making her character seem at least a little worthwhile.

Overall, this is an okay book. I gave it three stars, because I really got into it at the end, but struggled so much getting through the first half. I will most likely not be continuing the series, despite the cliff hanger ending.
