Yes, another re-read. I started this series based off a recommendation made to me by my roommate. I loved the first book and continued on with the series until Attack of the Fiend. My roommates favorite character was Tom, but the reason I continued on with the series is Alice and Old Gregory. Tom is your typical male protagonist, everything just works out for him, he's really quite boring. Alice and Old Gregory, however, are much more interesting.

Alice has been raised by malevolent witches; she's surrounded by people who either despise her or are afraid of her. She 'saves' Tom and requests in return that Tom do one favor for her. Tom does the typical protagonist thing and agrees to this without question or setting any limits. This works out just as you'd expect it to. But, what I like about Alice so much is that knowing that Tom is apprenticed to the Spook, knowing what will most likely be her fate when it gets back to the Spook what she did, she still saves Tom.

 

Which leads me into the reason that I like Old Gregory so much; he doesn't take the easy way out. There are only two ways to stop a witch for good:

“The first is to burn her. But nobody should have to suffer pain like
that. The other way is too horrible even to think about.
It’s a method few have heard about because it was
practiced long ago, in a land far away over the sea.
According to their ancient books, if you eat the heart of
a witch, she can never return. And you have to eat it
raw.

“If we practice either method, we’re no better than the
witch we kill,” said the Spook. “Both are barbaric. The
only alternative left is the pit. That’s cruel as well, but
we do it to protect the innocents ..."

I probably shouldn't like him so much for doing what any decent human would do, but I do. Old Gregory spends a lot of time and effort to keep the witches he's captured contained, so he won't have to subject them to such a horrible death. I also liked how he left Alice's fate up to Tom. Instead of telling him how to handle her, he let Tom decide what kind of person he was going to be.

 

I will say though that the ending was a little too neatly wrapped up. The ending meant that neither Tom, Alice or Old Gregory had to put any thought into what to do with Mother Malkin now that she has become much more powerful.

If you have read the books before the books was adapting to film, you (almost) always realise that movie is always dissapointing you.
You have too many expectations, you hope that everything you have read in the book will be on the movie. But it never happens.

And if you watch movie first, you like the movie with all your heart and you decide to read the book, but when you read the book you realise that book is totally different than the movie, and You are dissapointed again.

So to prevent that this happens and  that you won't get dissapointed with the book after watch the movie first because it is totally different, I recommend you to read these 7 books before that you will find them in the cinema really soon.

  3. Catching Fire  by Suzanne Collins

 

 HUNGER GAMES! If you have read the first book, I am sure you have read the second, the second novel in the Hunger Games trilogy, but If you haven't read the first book, start for it! Second book takes us again to the katniss's life, the war between the bad or good and of course, love.

  5. The Spook's Apprentice by Joseph Dhaney

This is no polite wicca-type witch, but a snuffling, slime-trailing, cannibalistic creature reminiscent of Tolkien's nasgils. The story of Tom's escape from the reincarnated witch's hideous revenge is full of horrible details, as Alice helps, and then once again betrays him. This well-crafted novel marks an auspicious start for an exciting and fast series for young teens.

Baca The Spook's Apprentice laksana minum air kelapa setelah menahan lapar di bulan puasa, menyejukkan jiwa yang lagi bete abis baca Mahogany Hills yang bikin gregetan #hammer. Pertamanya sih, baca ini karena mau difilmkan dengan judul The Seventh Son. Dimana Tom Ward yang masih 13 tahun, diperanin sama Ben Barnes...

Hapah??? Ben Barnes yang sudah 30an itu meranin cowok umur 13 tahun? Apa kata duniaaa? o__O

Tapi, mengingat bang Ben yang satu ini sukses meranin Prince Caspian yang umurnya 17 tahun dan dianya juga awet muda pisan, maka marilah kita wait and see untuk film The Seventh Son. Lagipula, setelah melihat trailernya, sepertinya film itu hanya terinspirasi saja. Contohnya sih, Mother Malkin yang diperankan sama Julianne Moore yang cantik buanget, nget, nget. Padahal di buku ini penampakan Mother Malkin tuh bikin merinding ma mau muntah. Apalagi pas dia dalam keadaan wick. Belum lagi ada si Antje Traue. Yang g tahu dia siapa, ini yang jadi Faora yang gebukin si Cavill di MoS itu loh (bukan Masa Orientasi Siswa :)) ). Kemungkinan Antje ini bakal jadi Mam, ibunya Tom yang misterius atau jadi Bony Lizzie, emaknya Alice. Melihat Mother Malkin jadi cantik gitu, I bet she will become Bony Lizzie

Nah, kalau udah lihat trailernya lagi, jelas g akan mirip ma The Spook Apprentice. Kemungkinan Seventh Son seolah ingin menantang Hansel and Gretel : The Witch Hunter, karena hampir mirip. Kalau bicaranya tentang bukunya, aku suka. Dark fantasy yang bener - bener horor. Terutama bagian tes pertamanya Tom Ward. Mana baca ini si hubby lagi g di rumah, dan asli parno kalau menyangkut hantu XD. Di sini juga pertama kalinya tahu istilah ghast, ghost dan boggart. Cuma boggartnya sih ga nakutin. So far.

Dari segi karakter, sukaaa banget sama Mam. Kalau Spook sih tipikal orang tua udah lewat jamannya. Tom sih, yah masih 13 tahun, wajar banyak salah. Si Alice, hmm wait and see, bisa jadi tokoh nyebelin dia kedepannya atau malah jadi tokoh favorit.
