Reading progress update: I've read 63%.
Crescendo (Song of the Fallen) (Volume 2) - Rachel Haimowitz

And sometimes, lying in the dark so very near to Freyrík and yet so very far, he thought of running away in the night. But the world seemed a frightening place to the deaf; however could he survive the winter crippled so? And what would become of Freyrík in the cold Feral wood without Ayden to guard his flank?

“Gods cracked, Freyrík, they would have raped me!” He surged forward so suddenly Freyrík flinched and tripped away. “And no, I did not incite or invite their attentions. It is your people who paint me like a harlot and parade me round half-naked, your people who find it amusing to use my brethren like toys, your people who teach their children such high art of disrespect that boys think raping in packs a pleasant pastime!”

Freyrík took a single step forward, froze. Then said something so soft and terrible Ayden could scarcely fathom it: “Would it truly have been so unbearable?”

Oh. My. God.

“I beg His Eminence would forgive me if my mind yet sways in all directions, for the wind blows strong from each side, and carries with it scents of both victory and defeat.”

So much love for this writing.

Jagall knelt beside Ayden, ducked his head to catch Ayden’s eye. “The song ails gravely, I know. But your mind-ear will soon numb, I promise you.”

Though Ayden knew ’twas futile, he struggled anew against the hands that held him. “Are you saying I will be deaf?”

Jagall shook his head. “Not forever, child. What is done today can be undone, remember? Besides, have you not been deaf from the moment you stepped inside the keep?”

Ayden supposed he had, more or less, but such thoughts brought no comfort now.

“The pain will end. You must hold on to that, do you understand?”

Ayden nodded.

Jagall nodded back, and slid the collar round Ayden’s neck.
