Review: The Dark War (The Dark War #1) by Angela Addams
The Dark War - Angela Addams

Review originally posted at RabidReads.com.

Magical Cliffhanger Urban

I’ve been wanting to try Angela Addams for a while. When I saw a new series on NetGalley, I thought this was a great time to give her a try.

Kali Richards is a witch and a witch hunter. She has turned her back on her people after a traumatic event that left her two sisters dead. She goes after witches who are doing evil things. Some of witch hunter brethren feel that pretty much any witch is a bad witch. They want to kill all of the ones that don’t work for the Hunter’s Union.

Kali is going after a witch who killed another witch for the dead witch’s family. It seems that Kali is a bit over her head. Kali is not a great spell caster. She uses her shear strength as her advantage. She is also a great tracker. She is able to follow a witch’s magic trail to find them. Ivana, the witch that Kali believes killed the witch, is more than she seems. She is also extremely powerful. Kali almost gets herself killed several times on this case.

Wyatt shows up just in the knick of time to save Kali from a group of vampires. He is Kali’s ex-boyfriend. They did not end things on a good note, but there’s still chemistry there too. Wyatt has some healing powers, so he is able to heal Kali after the vampires almost drain her. Wyatt also has several secrets that come out throughout the book. One of which is a real doozy.

There is also Billy, who is a human who works at the Witch Hunter’s Union. Billy is a nice guy and treats Kali really well. He is everything that Wyatt is not. He does have a crush on Kali and had for a while. This didn’t come out until partway through this book and Kali had no idea. It seemed like there might be a love triangle, but by the end of the book, maybe not. I won’t say no, but looks unlikely. I hope not.

There is also some other secondary characters that I enjoyed. Sam and Clive also work for the Witch Hunter’s Union. Sam is a witch too. Clive is her partner. They are a fun pair. Drake is a seer who makes an appearance. I think he will have a larger part to play later in the series. Kali’s mom and dad are also a larger part of the story. Both see predictions, but with different degrees of success. Kali’s mom is usually pretty accurate, her dad, is rarely accurate.

Overall, I enjoyed the story. I liked the action of the war and investigating the murder of the witch girl, which wasn’t everything it seemed. I think this series with the war has a lot of potential. I was not a fan of the romance between Kali and Wyatt or the possibility of a love triangle thrown in with Billy. I thought Kali and Wyatt have some pretty large communication issues. Wyatt has a hard time showing any feelings at all and that has caused some issues with Kali, and rightly so. The book ends on a pretty big cliffhanger, so I think I will have to check out the next book to see where this story goes.

**Book was provided to me by the publisher via NetGalley. This review is my opinion and was not requested or provoked in anyway.

Magazines are having to reinvent themselves like newspaper.  Do you subscribe to any in print?

Here is my life: Smithsonian, Lego, Poets and Writers, Romantic Times, Art in America, Mother Jones, Wired.

Here are some great romances set in the world of magazines.

My lists are in any particular order! Enjoy!

1. Love in Play by Zuri Day

With her curvaceous full figure and a mega-successful magazine career, Dominique Clark is finally large-and-in-charge of her life. The last thing she needs is romantic drama--especially in the form of her son's football coach, Jake McDonald, a man who's used to calling the shots. Yet when their instant attraction leads to a sizzling all-night sexual marathon, they agree that several rematches are in order just to get each other out of their systems. The loving is good, but their differences of opinion have Dominique's head screaming time out. Her heart, however, wants to stay in the game. . .

2. Into the Fire by Leslie Kelly

The only thing columnist Lacey Clark dislikes more than fellow columnist Nate Logan is her own boring existence. She wants to be spontaneous, spirited...sexy. So when she meets a gorgeous stranger at a party and falls in lust at first sight, she figures she'll never have a better chance to go for it. How could she guess that her first-class lover would turn out to be her number one enemy?

Nate Logan can't believe it! How could he have had the best sex of his life with the woman who's made his job a living hell? And how can he want her again...and again? Worse, their publisher is suddenly insisting Nate and Lacey collaborate on a joint column.

3. After the Kiss by Lauren Layne

Julie Greene loves flings. Loves steamy first dates, sizzling first kisses, and every now and then, that first sexy romp between the sheets. Comfy pants, sleepy Sundays, movie nights on the couch? Shudder. But when Julie gets assigned the hardest story of her career—a first-person account of that magical shift between dating and “I do”—she’ll need a man brave enough to give a total commitment-phobe a chance at more.

Normally, Mitchell Forbes would be exactly that man. A devastatingly hot workaholic who tends to stay in relationships for far too long, he should be the perfect subject for Julie’s “research.” But what Julie doesn’t know is that Mitchell is looking to cut loose for once in his life. And the leggy journalist notorious for avoiding love is exactly the type of no-strings fling he’s looking for. In other words, Mitchell is the polar opposite of what Julie needs right now. And, at the same time, he’s exactly what she wants.

4. A Home for Her Heart by Janet Lee Barton

Magazine writer Elizabeth Anderson has sparred with newspaper reporter John Talbot for years. Though they cover similar stories, John thinks Elizabeth's writing is trivial, and she finds him too boastful. So when they must work together to investigate New York City's worst tenement houses, they're surprised by the great team they make.

Despite their professional rivalry, John and Elizabeth begin to trust each other as they grow from competitors, to friends, to something more. But then John makes a startling discovery that would break the story—and Elizabeth's heart—wide-open. John's always been driven by his career—can he give up one dream for another?

5. Completely Irresistible by Sheridon Smythe

Before Kasidy Evans' estranged grandmother, Amelia Hancock, died she offered a reward to anyone who could find Kasidy. Kasidy must find the evidence that Amelia had against her father before someone else does, so she disguises herself and heads to the reading of the will to see what information she can get.

Wyatt Love works for an escort service called Mr. Complete. Amelia was one of his clients. Wyatt is shocked to discover that Amelia has left him her estate and her three wild poodles, Larry, Moe, and Curly. At the meeting, Kasidy immediately calms the dogs down. Wyatt is very attracted to Kasidy and he seizes the opportunity to get to know her by offering her a job staying at the estate watching over the dogs. Wyatt thinks he has stepped into one sweet deal. He gets to live in a mansion, and the girl of his dreams will be living with him, but suddenly he has a house full of unwanted guests including his twin brother Dillon. Dillon has big plans for getting Wyatt and Kasidy together.

6. Last Kiss Goodbye by Rita Herron

Fearful yet determined, Ivy Stanton returns to the small Appalachian town she left fifteen years ago…the night her parents were murdered. But in coming home to Kudzu Hollow, she discovers she is not alone in her search for the truth: Matt Mahoney, the man who saved her life, who haunts her dreams, who was wrongfully accused of the crime, has come back, too, demanding answers — and justice.

When Matt looks into Ivy's eyes, he sees a woman whose pain mirrors his own. The feelings she stirs within him promise a life he never thought he'd have. But evil still resides in this sleepy mountain town, as do secrets worth killing for. Now danger stalks them both, and Matt is fighting for more than vengeance…he's fighting for their future.

7. Hot Westmoreland Nights by Brenda Jackson

He knew better than to lust after the hired help. But Ramsey Westmoreland's new cook was just so delectable…it was enough to make the Denver rancher rethink his rules. When temptation got the best of him, he discovered Chloe Burton was just as hot in the bedroom as she was in the kitchen.

Though their affair was growing steamier by the minute, Ramsey couldn't help but question Chloe's true motives. And when he discovered her ultimate betrayal, he was set to satisfy himself with cold showers. Until he realized his fatal mistake: never underestimate the power of the human heart, especially a Westmoreland's.

8. Mayhem by Angela Addams

By night, Mayhem howls out monster rock hits to roaring crowds, and lives the rock ’n’ roll dream. But lately he wants more than empty sex marathons with lusting fangirls. When he spies a beautiful redhead at his latest album launch party, his wolf howls only for her.

He can taste her sweetness and innocence hovering just beyond his grasp, but it’ll be a delicate task showing her the side of his life no one ever sees. When the sun rises, and his wolf form takes over.

Fledgling rock magazine editor Hannah knows the minute she lays eyes on Mayhem that she won’t fit into his world. But that doesn’t mean she can’t fantasize that she’s the only woman wrapped around his smoking-hot body.

One kiss—one perfect kiss—and Mayhem is ready to seal the deal of and fora lifetime. But before he can properly introduce Hannah to both halves of himself, she is gone without a trace. And the rapidly cooling trail smells distinctly of Hunter…

9. Dear Prince Charming by Donna Kauffman

Too short to be a model, too unartistically inclined to be a designer, Valerie Wagner has finally found her niche in the fashion world she loves as the publicist for Glass Slipper, Inc., and the mastermind behind the launch of their brand-new glossy magazine. She's signed up the perfect cover model - Prince Charming, an advice columnist who's won the hearts of millions of women with his acerbic wit and his on-target romantic insight. Best of all, he's never revealed his real name or shown his face. Until now. And it's Valerie who's about to bring him into the limelight. There's just one problem. America's sweetheart, the sexy and sensitive man who's helped millions of women get their man, is coming out of the closet with a vengeance.

Valerie's new-found career is teetering on the brink of ruin. She can't crush the hopes of all the buyers of the magazine. She can't get Eric out of his seven-figure contract. And Prince Charming himself is tired of living a lie, and wants to find his own Mr. Right. Looks like there's no way out. Until Eric offers up his childhood best friend Jack, a sportswriter with a devilish smile and a chain of ruined relationships behind him. With Eric as the brains of the operation and Jack as the heartthrob that the media can sink its teeth into, they're an unbeatable team, and no one ever has to know... until Jack notices that behind Valerie's overachiever businesswoman personality is a woman with her very own kind of charm, and he decides to take matters into his own hands...

10. Lone Star Cafe by Lisa Wingate

Virginia-based publishing executive Laura Draper goes to Texas to face-lift a newly acquired magazine. Reeling from the project's endless snags, a sudden breakup with her boyfriend and her widowed dad's depression, Laura is in crisis when a detour leads her to a tiny rural spot called the Crossroads, where two elderly sisters run an old-fashioned caf . She is powerfully drawn to the timeless values the Crossroads represents reminders of her own abandoned dreams and her late mother's wisdom as well as to local Graham Keeton, a former military pilot shadowed by a mysterious grief.

Coloring outside the lines can sting like hell…

Shot by a Huntress, his wolf trapped within him, Dyami Storm is battling a poison that is eating him alive. His only hope is finding his mate, but without his wolf to guide him, he doesn’t know where to look.

The second the sexy bad boy stumbles into her tattoo shop, smelling of booze and oozing attitude, Summer Sinclair knows he’s trouble. She should turn him away, but a strange magnetic pull compels her to help him out with a little ink.

When Summer’s boyfriend walks through the door, Dyami senses he’s in the presence of a Hunter, and the Hunter recognizes him as a wolf. With hackles raised, a weapon coming at him, Dyami’s only choice snaps into place. Bite Summer, marking her as his—and unleashing her powers as a Spell Weaver.

On the run from Hunters and losing his fight against the poison, Dyami is in a race against time to convince Summer her power could change the course of the war…and that his fate is in her hands.

Warning: Sexually explicit. Tattooed, rock star drummer with a tender heart seeking his one true mate. Tough little tattoo artist with a special talent for spells. Lots of hot and heavy, wet and sweaty.

Exclusive Excerpt:

A symbol floated into Summer’s mind, fully formed and functional. “I think I can distract them enough to keep moving.”

“Do what you need to do.”

Summer let go of his hand reluctantly, then moved quickly from tree to tree, etching the mysterious symbol on each. She had a feeling in her gut that Vic knew these symbols too. That he had even used one or two on her in the time they’d been together to sedate her into compliance on a few occasions. Or maybe to distract her from things that he didn’t want her to see. She couldn’t explain how she knew this. It was just a feeling, but she was learning her feelings were pretty dead on lately.

“Trust your gut,” Dyami had said. “What does it tell you?”

Her gut was telling her she was more powerful than Vic. Her ruse would deflect him enough to buy them the time they needed.

“Done.” She walked back to Dyami, who’d been watching her the whole time. Again, unfazed by what he was seeing. “You must think this is so crazy. I can hardly understand it.”

He cradled her face in his massive hands, angled her head so that he could stare into her eyes. “Nothing about this seems crazy to me.”
She licked her lips, willing him to kiss her again. He didn’t disappoint. Leaning down, he kissed her tenderly, like he was sampling her mouth, lingering as he pressed his lips to hers. She wrapped her arms around his waist, her body up against his, pushing her mouth into him as she teased his lips with her tongue. With a soft rumble of a chuckle, he opened up to her, let her devour him from the inside as he did the same to her. Exploring each other, entangling tongues, all consuming as they melded into one another.

They heard the crack of branches snapping at the same time, pulled away from each other on a whoosh of breath. Dyami lifted his finger to his puffy, wet lips. Quiet. She could feel them too. They were near.
He moved her to the ravine, guiding her down until she was resting in a small depression.

It was only big enough for them to sit nestled into one another, Dyami in behind, his arms and legs cradling her. Overhanging branches, tree roots and leaves gave them some element of disguise. In the daylight, this would never work. Night offered the perfect hideout. He rested his chin on her shoulder, nuzzling her neck briefly before letting out a contented sounding sigh as he squeezed her tight. Yes, it did feel right to be in his arms. Stranger still, it felt like she could never again be apart from him and survive. She nestled closer, taking the momentary comfort he offered.

“They definitely came this way.” Vic’s voice seemed to boom from above them, carried on the wind, no doubt, to seem like he had breached her hastily made barrier.

Summer tensed at the sound of him so close. Dyami gave her a reassuring squeeze.

“Has she been casting?” A woman spoke next, frustration evident in her tone. “Are you sure we’re headed in the right direction this time?”

“Yes.” Vic hesitated. “I think.”

“You think? What the fuck, man?” The woman spat her words.

“Calm down, sweetheart, Vic knows what he’s doing,” another man said.

“No, Talia’s right. Vic’s been unsure this whole time, leading us in the wrong direction for a good thirty minutes. I think we need to head west. She must have used a symbol somewhere back there to throw us off again. Vic, you missed it.”

There was a beat of silence in which Summer thought her heart might explode. By their voices, she counted one woman, three men, and they were closer than she would have liked, having moved to the other side of the ravine. She could just make out Vic’s legs, recognizing him by the boots he always wore. His fists were clenched at his sides, a gun in one hand. She shuddered. He was not the man she’d thought he was.

“Fine!” Vic said on an explosion of breath. “Whatever, I missed it. Let’s go.”

“Admit it, Vic, you haven’t been as with it as usual. She’s stronger than you already.” Talia’s voice held a note of satisfaction, like she was reveling in Vic’s inabilities.

“I told you she was marked, didn’t I?” Vic growled. “Her abilities have surpassed mine already, so what? Isn’t that the way it always is?”

“So you’re admitting that you might have led us astray?” Talia came into view, two menacing looking weapons in her hands—like mini swords with prongs on each side.

Vic slid his gun into the back of his jeans. “Yes, okay? I’m admitting the possibility of that. Let’s head west.” “Eyes out for wolves, folks.” Talia motioned with one weapon in the opposite direction. “I’m looking to get me a skin before the end of the night.”

Summer felt Dyami shiver, and his whole body clenched a moment later—a symptom of their soaked clothes and the cool night air no doubt. They needed to get dry, find food, make some calls to extricate themselves from this situation. The only thing keeping her from losing her shit completely was the fact that Dyami was so calm, living the nightmare with her. As long as she had him, her hero, acting like a normal human being, she felt like she was safe.

Her destiny is etched in his skin…and carved in her heart.

Order of the Wolf, Book 3

Morgan Stills is a woman without a future. At least, that’s what the carnival psychic tells her. Love is foretold as well, but too bad. She’s already been marked for death.

She no sooner flees the psychic’s tent when she’s confronted by the biggest wolf she’s ever seen. A wolf that talks to her—right before she’s enveloped in a black cloak and dragged away.

Caleb was born for one purpose: follow the burning of his tattoo to find and protect his destined mate, the Huntress. When he rescues her from Lazarus, the king of beasts, what thanks does he get? A swift kick in his tender parts that leaves him writhing in a ball of pain.

Morgan quickly realizes her destiny lies with the Order of the Wolf. The only catch—she must choose between two sworn enemies who vie for her body, heart, and soul. Marked as a Huntress, thrust into an ancient feud between werewolf and Hunter, she must pick up a sword or die. And somehow learn to live without the man she is destined to kill.

Warning: Be prepared for fiery hot, melt-your-panties men, all muscle and sinew, searching for their one true mate. Committed, hot, and horny. What could be better?

Excerpt:

I sensed Caleb’s body nestled close to mine, felt his warmth in my dreams and it made me instantly wet and aching. I drifted out of a deep sleep to find him curled behind me in bed, slowly drawing patterns over my back. After my shower, I’d thrown on a pair of panties and a tank top before crawling onto the huge down-filled mattress. Now Caleb’s hand was snaking up under my top to touch my skin and continue his tracing.

I kept my eyes closed, loving the feel of his fingers gently stroking my flesh. My stomach fluttered with excitement. Sleep clouded my brain, making me fuzzy, making it all seem like a dream. A deliciously erotic one.

“You should get some more sleep,” he whispered, his lips brushing my earlobe, sending shooting spasms of pleasure through me.

“Mmm hmm.” I felt the prodding of his erection against my butt and imagined he was naked next to me. Sleep was the last thing he wanted me to do.

If this was a dream, it was the best dream ever.

I turned toward him, my stomach fluttering with new excitement as his hand slid around, following my movement, skimming across my belly until it stopped just under the swell of my right breast. I stared up at him. In the muted light, I could just make out his chiseled features as he propped himself up on his elbow, his upper body hovering above the bed.

“I hope you don’t mind.” His smile was wicked, what I would consider naughty, and it made my heart beat faster.

It feels so real. My brain was still cloaked by sleep, my thoughts now muddled with lust, reality and unconsciousness swirling together like I was under some kind of spell. Just go with it.

I smiled back, my hand shaking slightly as I raised it above the sheets and ran my fingers along his jaw. He had showered and shaved. “How long have I been asleep?”

Caleb shrugged, closing his eyes briefly as I caressed his cheek. “Only a couple of hours.” He opened them again to stare down at me, his gaze shifting to my lips. “I have some things I need to explain to you. Some important things about us.”

I nodded slowly, barely able to concentrate, as I traced my thumb over his bottom lip.

“I feel like this is right, Caleb. Why is that? I hardly know you, but I feel like we’re meant to be together.” Words tumbled out, no hesitation, or any kind of censor on my sleepy brain.

“You can call me Cal. Caleb was what my guardians called me when I was in trouble.”

I smiled at the thought. By the look of him, I imagined that Cal got himself into quite a lot of trouble over the years. “Okay, Cal.” I shifted down slightly, twisting to move his hand onto my breast. “I like it when you touch me.”

Cal moaned and covered my breast with his palm, taking my suggestion and putting his own spin on it as he moved his fingers over my aching nipple. “We are destined to be together, Morgan. That’s why you feel so comfortable with me.”

Less talking, more sexy. I nodded as I ran my hand down his chest, my mind dimly registering that he was telling me something I’d recently heard. When was it? I tilted my face up closer to his, and he took the cue again, reading my actions as well as my mind. He lowered his lips to mine, electrifying me with pleasure as he slipped his tongue into my mouth and slowly began to caress me from within.

Yesssss, that’s what I need.

I had never felt this way before, my body aching from a mere touch. Never had I wanted a man as much as I wanted Cal.

It was that thought that shattered over me, as his hand moved from one breast to the other. It was that thought that had me pulling away from him. It was the psychic—she was the one who had said those words. Two men, destinies entwined—how would I know who was the right one?

I jolted, eyes wide, brain suddenly snapping to attention. That settled it. This was no dream.

Interview:
Today, we welcome Angela Addams to Musings and Ramblings. Let's all give a big Geeky welcome!

Meow! Er…no…I meant hello! Who doesn’t talk a little pussy…er…kitty, right? You all know I’m an erotic romance writer…someone told you folks that, right? Cause if not, things could get a little hot and sweaty around here…we might just have to start taking some clothes off.

Let's start with some writer specific questions before moving into the fun stuff. That way everyone can really get to know the person behind the writer. We will finish things off with a round of Think Fast. Ready for the interrogation to begin?

Is this a stripping kind of game? One piece of clothing for each question? Who’s in?

Writing Specific

Is your writing style more plotter or pantser?
I plot and scheme (you should all be scared) but I’m not a thorough plotter. I create bullet notes when I start a project and know the basic idea of beginning, climax, end but things change….oh, yeah, they change a lot. I should probably do a better job at the detail part of this because sometimes while in the middle of Act 2 I do have to sweat it out for a bit trying to work the plot points that will get me to the end but eventually I get there. The sex scenes are a given…although some of them do sneak up on me at unexpected plot moments.

How do you deal with Writer's Block?
I don’t really like that word…block –to me it means full stop and coming to a full stop in writing is death for any project. I’ve said in past interviews that I don’t believe in Writer’s Block and I don’t. I believe that my writing is a job and I’m committed to producing work for people to read. Sometimes I lose motivation due to fatigue, or laziness, or a particularly stubborn plot jam, but I refuse to call it a block or to blame my failure to write on anything but myself. If you want something badly enough, you make it happen. Writer’s block is an excuse often used to stop things from happening.

Tell us something about yourself that's not in your bio.
I would love to pet a big cat…you know, like the dangerous, predator kind? Yeah, one of those. Stroke it, scratch its ears, nuzzle it, rub my face against its furry face. In fact, I’d love to have one as a pet, which I know is super crazy and will never happen, but I would. If someone could figure out a way to domesticate one of those big kitties, panther, tiger, lion, I’d be all over that.

What do you like to do when you are not writing?
I like to shop (okay, I LOVE to shop, especially for jeans!) I also have taken up trap shooting lately, which is quite a lot of fun. I find it very empowering and I like that I’m one of the few women there.

How did you choose the genres you write in?
I love all things paranormal and actually find it difficult NOT to think up stories in a supernatural kind of way. As for the sex stuff, I kind of fell into that by accident (on purpose). I discovered that I really enjoy exploring sexual relationships and interactions between characters in my stories. I’m a dirty perv really, and snicker at all the dumb sexual innuendoes so writing erotic romance is just a thing I must do.

Fun Stuff

What was the last movie/concert/show that you saw?
I went to Nine Inch Nails this summer and it was awesome! The night was terrible, torrential downpour and we had seats outside of the covered area but in the opening song chaos we managed to sneak our way to some pretty incredible box seats and had a blast!

What was the name of the last book you read?
I just finished Vincent by D.B. Reynolds…it was sooooo good! Totally hot and a great story!

Tell us 2 positive and 2 negative character traits you possess.
I am passionate (which really means opinionated) and disciplined when it comes to work.
I’m also stubborn and very blunt. (I don’t typically sugarcoat things.)

What is your bigges pet peeve?
Omg, when people don’t say what they mean. Or when they don’t speak their true thoughts, feelings…drives me mad!

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?
She said what?!

Think Fast

Meat or Veggies? Meat…mmmm steak, ribs, wings, sausage (wink wink), whatever it is, just give me meat.
Italian or Chinese? I’m half Italian so let’s go with that, although I do order Chinese once a week.
Summer or Winter? Fall! Ha! Autumn is my favorite time of year. I love the crispy weather (and Halloween!)
Coffee or Tea? Coffee…especially flavored.
Dead Tree or Electronic? A little bit of both…I like to switch it up. I’m a book-smeller and a kindle lover.

Thanks for coming by and spending some time with us. Any final words of wisdom to pass along?

Always break the rules.

Wolves' Bane
Wolves' Bane - Angela Addams I received a digital copy in exchange for an honest review from Netgalley.

There was a lot of conflict for me in this story because there was quite a bit of insecurity and contradicting emotions fluctuating within Morgan that it was hard to stick with her through the beginning but I stuck with her. There were so many unique characters and personalities in Wolves Bane that I almost needed to keep a list of who was what, did what, and what their powers were. There were a lot of elements that were recognized in the paranormal romance genre but there was also quite a bit that is special to this author.
A boon for all the female swooners, the men are dominating testosterone pumped... animals that will take over your world.
The love triangle complication is one that carries and weighs heavily on Morgan's shoulders that you can't help but want to understand everything she's going through.
