Book Review - Off Camera by Wendy Qualls
Off CameraOff Camera by Wendy Qualls
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This book made my nerdy heart sing!

A contemporary feel good romance where a bonafide nerd falls for a Hollywood hunk and both discover that some things - like love are worth fighting for. I especially got a kick out of the nod the author has given to geek culture in general and Sci Fi conventions in particular - both are near and dear to my cosplaying geek heart! DragonCon rocks, Wendy!!!

The plot was fun to follow, the writing was solid and the heat between the two men was intense, while their falling for each other was a slow burn that made my heart melt. The secondary characters were charming and fun to read and I really really loved this whole concept from start to finish.

Well done, Ms. Qualls, well done.

I wanted to love this
Buffy: The High School Years--Freaks & Geeks - Joss Whedon,Faith Erin Hicks,Yishan Li

I'd heard great things about the author, and I went into this knowing I'd hate the art, because I'd seen this in paper.   But it was on sale for one dollar, and I figured why not?

Unfortunately the art killed a lot of this for me.  It's not the manga style, even with characters I know.   Manga art can be amazing.   This particular art just didn't do it for me, and was quite frankly not the best, even with understanding how manga art differs from Western art.

This would play better if it didn't feel a little like some episodes; the question of whether or not teen outsiders, and those who had been done wrong, have been dealt with in the series, in a more nuanced way in my opinion.   The friends flipping on each other felt like that episode where Buffy's once-upon-a-time bestie male friend came from out of town, too.

So, yeah, not as impressed as I thought I'd be.  I was hoping for more, but glad to finally read this series and get a sense of what it was.

Beware of Geeks Bearing Gifts by Charlie Cochet Review
Beware of Geeks Bearing Gifts - Charlie Cochet

Julian “Quinn” Quintero, a gruff, tough Miami SWAT officer, has been injured on the job, and all he’s looking for is a little peace and quiet to recover—difficult to achieve with his large Cuban family. An adventure in picking up his prescriptions puts him in the path of his geeky, brownie-baking neighbor, Spencer Morgan. Spencer sweeps into Quinn’s life like a tropical storm of sunshine and rainbows. Not surprisingly, it’s chaos at first sight. Quinn’s in need of a little tender loving care, and Spencer decides he’s just the man for the job. Their very different lives might clash, but they might also find some common ground—and maybe more.

I wanted this to be way better that it was. It has all the elements I like with a geeky hero and nieghbor but we get too much of Quinn and not enough of Spencer. Sigh.

It is sweet though until instead of building a relationship there is mean outsider twist that was annoying.

An awesome summer listening experience...
Beware of Geeks Bearing Gifts - Charlie Cochet, Michael Stellman

'Beware of Geeks Bearing Gifts' was an adorable and sweet summer audio experience. Quinn is a gruff, tough Miami SWAT officer and he's also Spencer's sexy, nerve inducing neighbor and never the twain shall meet...until Quinn gets hurt in the line of duty and suddenly finds himself housebound and dependent on others for help and still Quinn and Spencer remain strangers...until Quinn's brother-in-law Rick leaves Quinn's pain meds with Spencer and the rest as they say is history.

Quinn and Spencer were just an adorable comedy of errors and getting past Quinn's defenses was more than a little challenging and just when he starts to thanks to Quinn's friends...or at least one in particular...that's right I'm talking about Javier...Mr. Total Jerk it's Quinn's turn to break get past barriers.

However, I did like Quinn's mother she was adorable in a smothering sort of way and then there was also Spencer's friend and neighbor, Danny who apparently likes to hand out Spence's apartment key to wounded, hunky SWAT agents...seriously why didn't I have a neighbor like that when I was single...honestly, some guys have all the luck.

I really enjoyed this one it was low steam but sweet and fun with a nice touch of heat towards the end.

Michael Stellman was the narrator for this audio book and his voices were well done. I definitely enjoyed listening to him and look forward to enjoying other audio books narrated by Mr. Stellman...as a matter of fact I see 'The High King's Golden Tongue' in my audio book future.
