A Love Song for the Sad Man in the White Coat
A Love Song for the Sad Man in the White Coat - Roe Horvat

“I regret the wasted time and energy. I regret what you went through. I will forever doubt there’s more to life than a limp shuffling toward a grave with just a few bright spots in between…”

Matěj snorted at the last one. “That’s a neat way to sum it up,” he commented sarcastically, making Simon smile into his hair.

Simon breathed in and out, the warm scent coming from Matěj’s nape underlined by the crisp air around them. “But tonight, my beautiful boy, the light is so bright I might as well be blind.”

I am going to try very hard as I write this review not to completely fall apart.  It has been a while since a book has impacted me quite as emotionally as this one has.  And while the tears have fallen, behind them was such beautiful and heartfelt emotion for these characters.  The writing is quite captivating and like with all of Roe’s books, quite unique. The structure of this one drew me in from the start and while it is the journey of 2 characters, it is the story of a group of friends as well.  It is about finding Home, about finding YOUR family and about finding “happiness and peace of mind”.

This is not what I would call a traditional romance but it is a love story.  As the title indicates, this is in fact “A Love Song”.  For me music can be felt in your soul.  It can impact you with no words at all.  And like with this beautiful “Love Song”, not everything is said with words.  To end one section of a book and simply turn a page, only to find yourself so emotionally impacted takes a talent that is hard to fully understand.  This book does that.  You will feel every emotion.  Every act. Every touch. Every breath and every action.  There are small gestures which read in the context of the book, mean everything.  This is about darkness and light and the colors in between.  This is about finding the person who helps you see though the darkness to find happiness and joy, love…to see light.

Matěj treated life like delicious food, just like he appreciated Simon’s books and hummed around a beer bottle. The boy knew how to enjoy things, how to marvel at things, how to savor impressions, how to feast on a pleasurable moment to its maximum capacity. It was a singular skill, wildly to be admired. When Simon found himself at the center of the man’s attention, those were easily the happiest minutes of his entire life. Everything in between lost color.

Let me not forget all the little things (which are actually quite big things)…the stick figures (yes, I just caught my breath and shed a tear); Tom Waits (who alone can conjure the right feelings and emotional tone of this story); dear Simon’s black and white apartment, and one of the most memorable and heartwarming trips to an ER I have read.  Add to this a cover that alone captures so much emotion and relates brilliantly to the darkness that surrounds these characters.

I know I have not said what this book is about.  Honestly I can’t put it into any words that will make sense.  It is a Song that must be heard for yourself…because how can you describe music that touches your soul?  You can’t.

Kane's Awakening
Kane's Awakening - Jaclyn Osborn

After months of teasing, postings about her discussions with Kane, and images of these two characters, we finally got an early release for this third installment in the Awakening Series.  While this can be read as a standalone, the characters from the other books make appearances.  The other two books were good. I loved Michael, probably the best, as a character, but Jackson was a perfect match for dear Zach.  And while both books were entertaining, neither held the grit that this one did for me.  Part of it may be that I immediately fell hard for both characters.  From their initial meeting, they were undeniably explosive together.

Kane was perfectly portrayed as an abused man with so many emotional walls. After a quite abusive relationship in his teen years, he shut himself completely off from any type of emotional connection with anyone and it is not until Ryker that the walls start to shatter. Ryker is just the perfect pairing for being able to see through the bullshit and see into the truth that is in Kane’s heart.

I’d built a wall around my heart and locked it inside an impenetrable barrier, but he seemed to have the damn key.

Ryker…absolutely perfect image.

There are some rough scenes between these two. Some harsh words and difficult situations and there are moments when you want to smack Kane upside the head and make him see reason. But there are the tender aww moments too that make you see inside of Kane and see exactly what Ryker sees.  #singlerose

And while there is the infamous drama around 85%...it worked for me.  There were issues and doubts from both parties and again trust is something that does not come easily for some and with Ryker’s history it was something that needed to be addressed.

Overall, this was just so well-crafted and told in such a beautiful way.  They grew as a couple and formed such a strong relationship knowing and loving the bad with the good.  It worked.

“Because dammit, Kane, you’re all I want. You are everything in a man that infuriates the hell out of me, but I keep coming back for more. Even though you’re stubborn and have asshole tendencies… even though you’re unfiltered and arrogant… I see you. The real you.” He smiled before pressing our heads together. “I’m aware of how stupid that sounds, but it’s true. There are moments when you look at me where I see your kind heart and your passion. Sometimes there’s a light in your eyes after I kiss you, one that you then hide.”

I couldn’t speak, so I stayed quiet and just let him do the talking.

“And the way I feel around you is unlike anything I’ve ever felt before,” he continued, pulling back and looking into my eyes. “I can’t get you out of my head, and I’m tired of fighting it. You might be an asshole… but I want you to be my asshole.”

And an asshole you can’t help but love to pieces.

Ryker smiled. “You ramble a lot when you’re nervous.”

“I’m not nervous.” I looked into his blue eyes and felt my heart twinge. He was too damn handsome. “Okay, maybe I am a little. Throwing you on the bed and fucking you senseless is easy, but taking you out to dinner makes my palms all sweaty.”

I adored the relationships they held with their families as well.  And while unconventional, everything seemed so genuine and real.  As for Devon…I wanted to kick his ass but I also kinda want his “Awakening” as well.  LOL He has a story to tell for sure.

And as a sidenote, I loved the addition of the relationship with Nemesis.  Such a beautiful way to show the love and understanding Kane has in his heart and a sort of recognition of the life he has had.  He is to Nem as Ryker is to him.  Heartwarming to say the least.

**Highly Recommended**

Right here
One Snowy Night - Jill Shalvis

This novella is book 2.5 from the acclaimed Heartbreaker Bay series.  This book can be read as a standalone novel.  For reader enjoyment and understanding of the series, I recommend reading these in order.

Rory has wanted Eve since he can remember.  He was kind of a tool in high school, but he feels like that was a missed opportunity.  Now, he thinks she hates him.

Eve wishes she could hate Rory, since he is the subject of many a nights dream.  He is a very strong, virile figure who is very capable.  Can they confront the past and move on?

I was surprised by this story arc, if I am honest.  I loved that the characters dug in and hashed everything out, even though they did not want to.  The honesty, the sparks that flew, and the crazy banter makes this a very attractive read.  I give this a 3/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

Chasing Christmas Eve by Jill Shalvis
Chasing Christmas Eve: A Heartbreaker Bay Novel - Jill Shalvis

This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life in Books.

I just loved this story! I have found this series to be consistently good so I was really excited to get my hands on this newest installment. I was even more excited to read this one once I discovered it would be Spence's story since I have really enjoyed his character in the previous books in the series. I had pretty high expectations going into this book and it met or exceeded every one of them. I had such a good time reading this charming romance.

Spence and Colbie are the focus of this story. Spence has had a role in the previous books in this series that revolves around a group of friends and the building that they live and work in. Spence happens to own the building and is the genius of the group. He spends his time inventing and working out complex problems.

Colbie is a big name author and the stress of her life has prompted her to run away from everything for just a bit. Colbie meets Spence during an unfortunate encounter at a rather famous fountain. They are so much fun to see together from that very first meeting. Colbie decides to stay for a while so that she can get the break that she so desperately needs.

Spence and Colbie were just adorable together. They had great chemistry from the very beginning of the story. There were so many moments that brought a huge grin my face and I may have chuckled out loud a time or too. The banter between this pair was really well done and provided a nice balance to the hotter sections of the story.

I would highly recommend this book to fans of contemporary romance. This book is the fourth book in the Heartbreaker Bay but it could easily be read as a stand alone novel. Readers of the series will enjoy seeing all of the characters featured in earlier books in the series. I can't wait to see what happens next in Heartbreaker Bay!

I received an advance reader edition of this book from Avon Books via Edelweiss.

Initial Thoughts
I just loved this story. Spence and Colbie were so great together. It was nice to see the other characters from the series play a role in the story as well.
