By Ednah Walters Immortals (Book two) (Runes) (1st First Edition) [Paperback] - Ednah Walters

Raines best friend was Cora. It was usually Raines webcam Cora used for her blog and “ Hottie Of The Week” . Cora felt Raine needed a life outside of books but Raine swims and plays the oboe in the band. Cora and Raine had been best friends since Jr High when Raine found Cora crying in the girls locker room. Cora had problems adjusting to public school as she had been home schooled until then. Eirik was Raines unofficial boyfriend. Then someone knocked at Raines door and she thought it was Eirik but it wasn’t he said he was her new next store neighbor where Eirik and he needed to talk to Eirik as soon as possible. Raines father had been on a plane that crashed in the Pacific Ocean but his body had not been found but it had been three months yet Raines mom believed he was alive. Raines parents owned Mirage which was a framing and mirror store, with her dad gone her mom was pulling double duty and often beyond to clean up for the next business day.  Raine didn’t really see her mom much anymore. Raine had backed into her neighbor's mailbox, destroyed it but when she got home from her swim team practice  the mailbox looked like nothing had happened to it. She went over to thank “ blue eyes” as she called her new neighbor she asked him how he had fixed the mailbox and he said magic. Later that night Eirik showed up at her house  and climbed the tree to her balcony.  Raine tried to be mad at Eirik as he hadn’t answered her calls or texts but she just couldn’t be. If she had done what Eirik had Eirik would have been mad as Eirik had a temper.Eirik and Raine had been inseparable since they were kids. They had grown up together. Eirik was her best friend and there wasn’t a thing she didn’t know about him. Eirik had been adopted by his parents but instead of showering him with love, they traveled a lot and left him with nannies and a housekeeper he had spent most of his waking and sleeping hours at Raines house. Then Raine mentioned the new neighbor and Eirik asked if Torin had made her mad. Raine was attracted to Torin even if he wasn’t nice and definitely not safe. Eirik seemed to step up recently and claim Raine as his girl but Raine found she was still very attracted to Torin. Knowing Torin had used magical runes to save her life. Raine didn’t know what to think of the runes or the magic.

I loved the story until the very end of it which I consider a cliffhanger and I hate them and ruined the story for me. I was very disappointed in this. I will give it a 3 rating  Even though I know what Raine's mom said you figure it will be ok.  I did love the characters and the ins and outs of this story.

Brock’s compassion and sense of justice are seeds that sprout tight friendships and a blossoming romance. An unwillingness to be bullied earns him a dangerous enemy, becoming a feud that escalates to a climactic showdown.

Review for book 1

Boy did I really love Brock. I thought he was a pretty interesting hero and really looked after the people he loved. I have to say wow the girls were falling for him, left and right.
I thought the journey he took along the way to get to the Academy was pretty awesome. Even though parts were boring it didn't make me what to give up on the book. I really loved his friendships with Cameron and Benny whom he became friends with at the Academy.
I really loved his love interest Ashland, she was pretty bad-ass. I thought they made a pretty interesting couple. Things that Brock and us readers find out about his abilities made me even more invested in reading this series. Also what Brock is starting to figure out about the academy, also makes this book even more intriguing.

Here is an excerpt from THE BURIED SYMBOL. This is a short scene that takes place after Brock and his friend Tipper take refuge in a cave when a rain storm interrupts their journey to the Academy.

A noise woke Brock, who sat up to find his clothes still damp. He rubbed the crust from his eyes and blinked to shake the cobwebs from his brain.
Recognizing his surroundings, he remembered the cave they had found to escape the rain. Early morning light emanated from the entrance, shedding light on Tipper, who lay asleep beside him. In the dim light, Brock noticed something near Tipper.
He leaned close to get a better look, finding bones he hadn’t noticed in the dark of night. Near the bones, rows of four parallel lines marked the surface of the rock. His chest constricted as he realized that something lived here, something large.
A howl echoed in the forest outside the cave.
Brock urgently shook Tipper.
“What? What’s happening?” Tipper blurted, sitting up in confusion.
“Shh.” Brock whispered. “Be quiet. There’s something out there.”
Tipper rubbed his eyes. “Huh? What are you talking about?”
A shadow eclipsed the light at the mouth of the cave. As Brock turned toward the entrance, his breath caught in his throat.
Against the light of the morning sky, the silhouette of a massive four-legged creature blocked the opening. Whatever it was, they were in its home and it was angry.
A low growl sounded, its ferocity rumbling in the small cave. The boys backed away, and Brock stumbled when he collided with a boulder near the rear of the cave. He scrambled to his feet as his mind raced. The beast blocked the only exit. Like the banshee attack at Glowridge Pass, they were trapped in a hopeless situation with no way out. His mind drifted back to that event and he reacted.
Brock scooped a bone from the cave floor and began scraping a symbol on the boulder: the same rune he had drawn on Hank.
The creature stepped forward, and Brock noticed the beast’s eyes, glowing an angry red. The smell of wet animal filled the cave, mixing with the smell of fear from Brock and Tipper.
Spurred by desperation, Brock closed his eyes and began pushing with his will. He felt the same force as last time, just beyond himself. Pushing harder, he latched onto it and his body grew flush with hot energy. A storm raged within, threatening to destroy him. He opened his eyes and poured the energy into the rune. It glowed bright red, pulsing as the boulder began to shake.
Brock backed from the advancing creature into the rear of the cave, against Tipper’s cowering form.
The boulder suddenly burst. Bits of rock pelted him, cutting hands held up to protect his face from the beast. The creature leapt back from the blast, dozens of small shards hitting its face and body. It growled in rage. Brock lowered his throbbing hand to see what had happened.
The boulder moved toward the beast. The round headless body of the rock advanced on four legs made of stone, emitting crunching and grinding sounds with each movement.
The hairy beast attacked, swinging vicious swipes with its huge paws. Sharp claws scraped the hard surface of the living boulder and bounced off harmlessly. The beast backed away, but the boulder continued to advance.
The beast attacked again, with little result as the boulder relentlessly forced it backwards. Suddenly, animal was outside, its red eyes squinting in the pale light of pre-dawn. It made one last swipe and then bolted.
The boulder turned the corner to give chase, one leg stepping over the edge, and it disappeared. The rumbling and crunching sound of a small rockslide followed as it tumbled away.
The cave became silent.
“What in the blazes? Brock, what did you do?” Tipper shouted. “What was that thing? What’s happening?”
“I don’t know!” Brock yelled back. He was breathing heavily, trying to calm himself. “I don’t know, Tipper. I had to do something, and it just came to me. I don’t know what it is.”
“It’s like what happened with Hank. You did it again with that big rock,” Tipper said.
“Yeah. I know,” Brock replied. “I wish I knew what it was, but I don’t.”
Brock grabbed his pack and headed toward the entrance. “Let’s get out of here before that thing comes back.”
Stepping outside the cave, he looked down. The rock-thing lay at the bottom of the outcropping, its legs broken off with the pieces still twitching. A shiver went down Brock’s spine.
“That’s creepy,” Tipper said.

Nodding, Brock began to climb down as the first rays of morning sun streaked across the valley.

Taking a deep breath, I opened my door and slowly walked down our driveway. My heart pounded hard as I started down the sidewalk and headed for Torin’s front door. I paused before hopping onto the porch. Once again, I gave myself a pep talk before pressing the doorbell.

No response. Okay, leave. You tried.

But I couldn’t leave now that I’d made it this far. I pressed the doorbell again and angled my head to listen for movement from inside. Nothing. The garage door was open and I’d seen his Harley, so I knew he was home. Maybe he was asleep. Relieved, I turned to leave.

He yanked the door open. “Can’t stay away from me, can you, Freckles?”

“Don’t flatter…” My voice trailed off when I found myself staring at his bare chest. Not that I was complaining, but did he have something against shirts? “Yourself,” I finished weakly.

He chuckled, drawing my attention upwards, past the water droplets on his chest to the wet hair caressing his shoulders. At least he had a legitimate reason for walking around shirtless this time. Still, you’d think he’d put on a shirt before answering his door.

“Can we talk?” I said.

His brow shot up. “About?”

“The incident at the park.”

He looped a towel I hadn’t noticed around his neck, crossed his arms, and leaned against the doorframe. His eyes narrowed. “What incident?”

“You know, when that girl attacked me and—”

“You tripped and landed on your lovely ass?”

“Lovely…?” My face warmed. “That’s not what happened and you know it,” I protested.

“That’s what I saw.”

“Liar.”

TEASER 1
He moved closer as he helped, bringing with him a masculine scent hard to describe. It bugged the crap out of me that I liked it. Worse, the heat from his body seemed to leap through the air and wrap around me in ways I couldn’t describe.
My mouth went dry. The instinct to put space between us came from nowhere, but I ignored it. Only cowards ran when faced with something they didn’t understand, and my parents didn’t raise one. Still, a delicious shiver shot up my spine, and a weird feeling settled in my stomach.
I waited until I was in control of my emotions before turning to face him. I tried not to stare at his masculine arms and chest. I really did, but all that tanned skin was so inviting and begging to be ogled. I’d seen countless shirtless guys before. Half the swim team spent time in tight shorts that left very little to the imagination, but their bodies were nothing like his. He must be seriously into working out. No one could be this ripped without hitting the gym daily.
“My face is up here, Freckles.”
My eyes flew to his, and heat flooded my cheeks. I rushed into speech to cover my embarrassment. “I, uh, I was just leaving to go to swim practice and…

TEASER 2
I followed the sounds to the garage, where Blue Eyes sat on a wooden box and tinkered with a greasy thingamajigger that looked like something one pulled out of a robot. I couldn’t tell where the music came from, but I recognized the classic rock tune. Not bad.
He didn’t glance up or move, yet the music stopped. Magic? No, I shouldn’t even think like that. It was illogical. Magic didn’t exist.
“I thought we agreed to stay away from each other, Freckles.”
I’m not letting him get to me. Not this time. “I plan to, but you fixed the Petersons’ mailbox, so I’m here to thank you.”
“Courteous? You? What happened to the snarky girl I met earlier? Raine with an E?” He looked up, a wicked smile curling his lips. “I liked her.”
I ignored the dig. “How did you do it?”
He wiped his greasy hands on a cloth. “Magic.”
“Don’t start. Magic is not real.”
“Says who?”
“Me. Science. Logic.”
“Okay, Freckles. We’ll play this your way. We’ll say I was inspired, and there’re no heights a man can’t reach when...” he got up, leaned closer, and whispered, “inspired.”
