This theme is so common in Contemporary Romances I am willing to guess 1 in 10 books have this troupe.

Its okay. I love it. Why? Hmmm. Why? Well, it isn't because the early months of being preggers are so sexy that's for sure.

I think that in these romances the couples tends to spend lots of time together and aren't getting chased around by bad guys. I like that. Sometimes it is the hero's baby and sometimes its not but its always a surprise and not a plan in this troupe.

In this vast field of really pretty awful romances with this theme, what are the best books?

Here are some I found particularly good!

1. Everyday, Average Jones  by Suzanne Brockmann

2. Her Ideal Man by Ruth Wind

3. Perfection by R.L. Mathewson

4. Waking Up Pregnant by Mira Lyn Kelly

5. Undeniably Yours by Shannon Stacey

6. The Pregnancy Test by Erin McCarthy

7. Black Ties and Lullabies by Jane Graves

8. Walk on the Wild Side by Natalie Anderson

9. Seducing Simon by Maya Banks

10. Dedicated Ink  by Ranae Rose

Do you have a favorite? Let me know!

I left off books that feature miscarriage. While realistic, they always broadside me when I am expecting a lighter kind of romance.

Romance readers have widely varying feelings on babies, pregnancies, and childern in their love stories.

I am a fan.  In Historical Romance, I am especially intrigued by the unplanned pregnancy.  It could be the hero's baby or not.  What happens next? Good stuff.

Here is list of great Historical Romances where the Heroine is unexpectedly expecting.

1. The Governess Affair  by Courtney Milan

Hugo Marshall earned the nickname "the Wolf of Clermont" for his ruthless ambition--a characteristic that has served him well, elevating the coal miner's son to the right hand man of a duke. When he's ordered to get rid of a pestering governess by fair means or foul, it's just another day at work. But after everything Miss Serena Barton has been through at the hands of his employer, she is determined to make him pay. She won't let anyone stop her--not even the man that all of London fears. They might call Hugo Marshall the Wolf of Clermont, but even wolves can be brought to heel...

2. Truce: The Historic Neighbor From Hell by R.L. Mathewson

lizabeth knows what’s expected of her, perfection. She’s the daughter of an Earl and expected to marry well, say and do the right things with a smile on her face when inside she’s dying for a chance to escape. Thanks to an inheritance her godmother left her years ago, her chance will come with her next birthday. Her hopes of escape abruptly end when Robert, her childhood nemesis that she hasn’t seen in over fourteen years, comes back into her life and does everything he can to drive her out of her mind even as he steals her heart.

He hated her.

At least, he tried to hate her, but it was so damn difficult to hate someone that he couldn’t live without. He tried to ignore her, tried to focus on anything but her, but nothing worked. Somehow she made her way into his heart and started to make him want things that he never thought possible, made him smile and laugh even while she drove him out of his mind and started a legacy by turning him into…..

A Bradford.

3.  One Night With You by Sophie Jordan

Tired of being treated like a servant by her own family, Lady Jane Guthrie finally has a chance to escape . . . at least for one night. Attired in a daring gown, she arrives at a scandalous courtesans' masquerade ball looking forward to her few hours of freedom. But when she sees Seth Rutledge, her skin begins to tingle with anticipation. Many years ago, Seth broke her heart by falling for her beautiful, title-hungry sister. But now here he is, right in front of her, offering her his lips . . .

Embittered by war, Seth returns home to inherit the title that would have once won him the woman of his dreams. Though duty demands he wed, he's convinced passion no longer has a place in his life . . . until a masked siren sets his heart aflame. Desperate to find her again, he has no idea it's his childhood friend Jane—and that after one night together their lives will never be the same.

4. The Dangerous Viscount by Miranda Neville

Lady Diana Fanshawe’s impeccable bloodline doesn’t stop society from laughing at the antics of her eccentric family. She knows a proper marriage is her one chance to make her way in the world—which is precisely why she will marry Lord Blakeney, though she’s certain she’ll never love him. But then she’s kissed by the brilliant and unconventional Sebastian, Viscount Iverley . . . and her well-laid plans tumble into disarray.

Sebastian wants absolutely nothing to do with love or marriage. But when he arrives at his hated cousin Blakeney’s house party, Sebastian is smitten by the tantalizing Diana. But Diana is “the marrying kind,” and Sebastian has no wish to risk his freedom—though the passion betweenthem is hard to resist. Should the lady follow her heart in an attempt to win Iverley’s, though it seems hardened against her—or should she sacrifice her love for respectability?

5. The Devil You Know by Liz Carlyle

Frederica d'Avillez is sure she will never marry. She's had a disastrous London season, and now her longtime beau has thrown her over for a more eligible miss. But if Freddie can't have a husband, she's hell-bent on experiencing at least one night of unforgettable passion. Where better than in the arms of the dashing rogue Bentley "Hell-Bent" Rutledge? So what if he's a rake, scoundrel, and all-round devil?

Scandal trails in Bentley's wake and fair maidens usually steer well clear of him -- and vice versa. But when the opportunity presents itself, Bentley can't resist Freddie's exotic beauty. When their wild, reckless passion has dire consequences, Bentley is forced to choose between honor and freedom. And Freddie soon realizes that Bentley's devil-may-care façade is just that -- for she has unwittingly unleashed his dark secrets...and secret desires.

6. One Night of Passion by Elizabeth Boyle

Georgiana Escott has one night to find the perfect man to ruin her and leave her with a tattered reputation so she can avoid an arranged marriage to an aging, despicable roue. With a misstep, she tumbles into the arms of the disgraced and dashing Lord Danvers. But Georgie doesn't know that the lover she has enticed to follow her into the night and the stranger she holds responsible for her misfortunes are in the same . . .

When Lord Danvers find himself entangled with a tempting Cyprian, his secret mission to expose a dangerous spy goes awry. Yet once he starts to unmasked this bewitching lady, he realizes the seductress who claims his heart may be the traitor he seeks. 7. My Fair Mistress: A Novel by Tracy Anne Warren

He drives a hard bargain, but the pleasure is all hers.

London financier Rafe Pendragon has a reputation for ruthlessness, and exotic beauty Julianna Hawthorne is determined to clear the debt her brother owes him. Captivated by Rafe’s virile good looks, weakened by his intoxicating mix of danger and sensuality, Julianna boldly agrees to Rafe’s shocking terms: six months as his mistress. As Rafe’s intense green eyes pierce her body and set it afire, Julianna can only imagine what emotions his kiss may unleash.

Surrendering to the pleasures of seduction and carnal delight, Rafe never anticipated that love would be the cost of his bargain. When he realizes that a vindictive enemy may harm Julianna should their clandestine liaison be exposed, Rafe must choose between loving her and protecting her. To save his fair mistress, Rafe must risk what he has already lost: his heart.

8.  Cold Night, Warm Stranger by Jill Gregory

Maura Jane Reed was twenty-four years old and had never gone to a dance, owned a new dress, spoken aloud without giving careful thought to each word, or kissed a man. On that savage January night when snow engulged the Rockies in a raging blur of glittering white, when the wild creatures hid and shivered, and no one stirred in the tiny, dirty town of Knotsville, Montana, she had no inkling that her life was about to change forever.

Quinn Lassiter was a feared gunfighter, a man without home or roots. But when one night of love-making left Maura pregnant, Quinn did the one thing he’d thought he’d never do. He married Maura and promised to take care of her and their child. He was certain married life in a cabin would be like prison, but soon his new bride’s irresistible beauty and spirit made him long for her with a need that couldn’t be denied. Quinn never thought he’d fall in love, but that was before he found the one woman who made him forget his wandering ways….

9. Sweet Lullaby by Lorraine Heath

Seduced, abandoned, and left pregnant and unwed, Rebecca finds a new life with Jake, a ranchhand who marries her at the request of her father.

10. A Scandalous Marriage by Cathy Maxwell

Leah Carrollton had dreams of meeting—and marrying—the perfect man. Then a scandalous affair ended in abandonment, and she left London rather than face her disgrace. With no one to turn to, Leah ran away to the country. Abruptly Devon Marshall, Viscount Huxhold, strides into her life, enveloping her in his strong embrace and offering her a chance to recapture what she'd lost.

Heir to one of England's most honorable titles, Devon has spent his life breaking the rules—and giving Leah and her fatherless child his name is just one more way to flaunt convention. But Devon discovers Leah tantalizes him as no other woman ever has, making him long for all the sweet bliss that marriage has to offer. But can a marriage made in scandal become a happily-ever-after affair?

Review: Solitary Man by Carly Phillips
Solitary Man - Carly Phillips

Definitely heavier than I expected from Carly Phillips. One of the most heart-wrenching stories I've read in a long time. The hero, Kevin, actually started to get on my nerves with his, "I don't deserve her" mentality. That being said, his character is well-developed and it's understood why he is the way he is. I really liked the heroine, Nikki. She was young but strong and smart; knew how to handle herself and the situation she is thrust into even though everyone seems to treat her like she's still a child, she doesn't act like one.
