Review: Written on Her Heart

Sigh ah romance. This was exactly what I needed this week, a well crafted famous-person-meets- small-town-girl book. Written on Her Heart was a delightful read full of great scenery and some interesting characters.

It is easy to write about friends that are great, that have your back at every turn and are there to support you. This is not that book. Andi's friends are complicated, selfish and some of them ultimately aren't friends at all. It was a nice break from a lot of the other romance books I've read lately. I hope that some of the next books in the series go into more detail about these characters because some of the issues seem to have been a little glossed over in this story.

Andi and Ford's chemistry jumps off of the page from the get go. I enjoyed the slow build of their relationship and the fact that she tried to salvage her current relationship despite her attraction to Ford. Not every relationship starts on the best of terms, but Andi needed to realize on her own terms that her boyfriend was not everything she deserved.

I really enjoyed reading this story and am looking forward to more from this author. Highly recommended.

Šta je to pozornica? Vidiš? Tu se igrom spremaju ozbiljne stvari.

 

Šest lica - Otac, Sin, Majka, Pastorka, Dečak, Devojčica - nešto smeteni i neodlučni ulaze na probu jedne pozorišne predstave. Imaju naročite maske, da deluju kao kreirane realnosti. Odeća im je takva da ne daje utisak da je sašivena od materijala koji se mogu kupiti u bilo kojoj trgovini u gradu i skrojiti u bilo kojoj krojačkoj radnji. Na samom početku Pirandelo naglašava šta je važno: utisak, privid. Igra se percepcijom. Čak i u didaskalijama (koje su prividno samo predlozi, budući da ih je nemoguće zaobići), ključem dela imenuje utisak da se nalaze pred nepripremljenom predstavom. To što je u didaskalijama naznačeno da se zavesa ne spušta poništava granicu između publike i pozornice: zavesa je veo, simbol štita pre nego štit.

 

"Tražimo ovde jednog pisca."

"Bilo kakvog." 

Pisac nije nužno i autor. On je provodnik između ideje i publike, ne tvorac. Šaptač u grotesknoj igri uloga (kako se, divne li veze!, zove i komad pomenut na početku drame) postaje pisac, ali to njega ne čini autorom. Pirandelo se ne poigrava samo terminologijom, već i temeljima pozorišta. (Da li je terminologija temelj? Šta je teatar bez teorije?) 

 

Metateatralnost ublažava dramatiku, i to uporno i hladno ublažavanje pojačava užas. (Ovo jeste komedija, jer se završava smehom!)

 

 

Likovi jesu manje "realni" od glumaca i ljudi uopšte, ali su baš zato istinitiji. U diskusiji s Direktorom razvijaju tezu da to što nisu na stranama knjige ne znači da nisu lica i da to što su plod mašte ne znači da nisu istiniti.

Ono što je za vas iluzija koju treba stvoriti, za nas je, naprotiv, jedina naša realnost.

U vrtlogu paradoksa i groteski jedan od likova, "Sin", kao bunovan ponavlja molbu autoru, roditeljima, delu i umetnosti uopšte:

Pustite me da odem, molim vas! Pustite me! Ja neću ništa da predstavljam!

Ne želi da se završi, već da nije ni započet. Upravo ga ta želja čini stvarnijim od ostalih.

Igrajući dodeljenu ulogu vi namerno treba da pravite marionetu od samog sebe. 

Ne samo na pozornici, već i u životu, čovek prečesto uzima samo ono što mu je dodeljeno. "Sin" odbija da se pokori teatru, odbija da bude dodeljen glumcu jer bi ga to učinilo marionetom, još jedan stepen daljom od istinitosti. Ostala lica naivno (i sudbinski) tragaju za ostvarenjem preko glumaca, iako gluma samo oduzima autentičnost. Otvara se pitanje da li glumac postaje lik, ili lik postaje glumac.

 

Paradoks odnosa forme i suštine najizraženiji je u Očevoj replici Direktoru:

 Svako od nas - vidite - veruje da je "jedan", a nije tako: on predstavlja "mnoge", gospodine, "mnoge", prema svim mogućnostima bića koja su u nama.

kaže lice sa u vidu maske fiksiranom jednom definišućom emocijom!

 

Umreće čovek, pisac, oruđe stvaranja; stvoreno ne umire više!

Osim pitanja da li to pisac nije čovek, ili je i kao čovek samo oruđe, ovaj krik/ poklič naznačava i problem perfekta, priče i pripovedanja: realnost današnjice je sutrašnja iluzija, koji se razvija u odnosu lika i glumca. Lica imaju samo realnost - jer nemaju sutrašnjicu. Majčin vrisak Događa se i sada, događa se stalno! pokreće lavinu pitanja o vremenu unutar umetničkog dela u sukobu s realnim vremenom (i koje je vreme tu realno uopšte?!). Sve je krug, sve se uvek iznova događa; svaka priča je večita i osuđena na ponavljanje: iako je prvo, "pravo", "originalno" vreme priče prošlo, ono unutar realnog vremena stoji u večitoj, skamenjenoj sadašnjosti. 

 

 

 

 

** Delo u naslovu ima šest lica, iako se na probi pojavljuje njih sedmoro. Madam Pače, koja dolazi kad se ostvare uslovi, ne traži pisca. Ona postoji nezavisno od mašte autora, jer potiče iz realnog sveta, tj. iz onog njegovog dela najbližem glumi. Ona jedina ima vlastito ime, što je u neku ruku paradoks. Pojedinci su svedeni na po jednu masku, dok tipični prestavnik profesije polaže pravo na individualnost. Pojedinci se bore za mesto u teatru, a Madam Pače postoji. Još jednom se posle grubog prodora u suštinu pozorišta čitalac nalazi pred nedorečenim. **

 

 

Kraj nam ostavlja upitnik, a pitanje treba da formulišemo sami.

Mansfield Revisited – Joan Aiken

2 1/2 stars? I think?

I'm not sure what made me read this when I did. It certainly wasn't a deep devotion to either Mansfield Park or Fanny Price that made me long for a continuation of the story. I know I acquired the book a good ways back because Joan Aiken is on my List, and because I was curious about her continuations of Jane Austen… it just slotted itself into my reading schedule, I guess.

A Dodge, a Twist, and a Tobacconist: A Steampunk Literary Tribute Adventure (The Alexander Legacy) (Volume 1) - Sophronia Belle Lyon

I'm not going to rate this. I often do rate even books I've been unable to finish – but this one has me puzzled. First of all - great title (although it felt like the author stretched a bit for it). The writing isn't bad, for the most part. I really like the idea – it's The League of Extraordinary (Ladies and) Gentlemen (the author says so). The book description – based on which I requested it – sounded good. I liked some of the character choices – Mowgli and Bagheera, and Edward and Elinor Ferrars! I squee'd a little Janeite squee, though I thought the latter pair a strange choice for crime-fighting. (I'm picturing Emma Thompson's Elinor reducing bad guys to jelly with scathing wit. Hugh Grant's Edward could possibly be a Lord Peter type, so seemingly ineffectual that evildoers never see their undoing coming.) I didn't know most of the rest – several are from Alcott other than Little Women and its sequels, and the main character is from Stevenson. I've heard of Sluefoot Sue and Pecos Bill, peripherally, and Twist, I think, needs no introduction. But see, the reason The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen was such a great idea was because it the Gentlemen had Extraordinary abilities. Not to disparage the Ferrars, or some of the others involved here, but high moral standing just isn't on a par with invisibility or super strength when it comes to fighting bad guys.
