Dark and Stormy Knight (The Knights of Avalon, #2) by Nina Mason
Dark and Stormy Knight (Knights Of Avalon) - Nina Mason

Magic, fantasy, BDSM, mythology, and passion, all beautifully blended to create this unique tale of love and liberation.

“The world fell away. Time stood still. There was only his key winding her up, only the building tension in her spring, only the hammer preparing to strike her chimes.”

Gwyn, our heroine, travels to Scotland not only to secure the film rights to a novel but because she felt it was her chance to do something different. Once Leith lays eyes on her he sees an opportunity to engage on some fun BDSM games that he hadn’t had a chance of playing in a long while. What neither of them expected was to fall in love and what started as a playful and erotic encounter for both Leith and Gwyn turned into a quest to save more than their lives; it was a magical adventure that kept me turning the pages and fulfilled my love for all things mythical.

Now, there were a few instances where too many deities and names were thrown in and perhaps the pace of the story lagged a bit but that might have been my problem as I tried to keep up with everything and expecting the pace to always stay the same.
The chemistry between the hero and heroine took a bit of time to take off but I think it was meant to happen that way because they were not in love at the start as it was merely attraction. As the story progressed the attraction was obviously undeniable but there was also something more, something deeper and the connection was finally there, thus the curse took hold.

In addition, I liked that characters from the first book were re-introduced here and some were actually a very important piece to keep the plot moving forward.

Ms. Mason is a must read for me now and this is a series that I will not pass on and recommend to any fantasy lover adult.

Killian (The Avalon Series Book 1) - Elizabeth Kelly

Killian seduces the reader with intriguing characters, excellent world building, and compelling romance. A fantastic beginning to this new NA Paranormal Romance series.

I can't wait for more!

My Review: Starry Knight (Knights of Avalon) by Nina Mason
Starry Knight - Nina Mason

Sexy entertaining read with plenty of Scottish history and folklore mixed in with a new take on vampirism.

Lady Vanessa is a woman of society with a special gift and has decided to use that gift to her advantage in her new job as a paranormal investigator. Her first assignment is to find unequivocal proof that vampires exist, however she gets more than what she bargains for when she finds Lord Callum Lyon.

Although there is not much romance between the two as it was more insta-lust, the chemistry is still rich and right. Callum sounded the ancient gentleman he is supposed to be and Vanessa, even when she behaved petulant and excessively self-sufficient at times, she also had her sweet moments.

The story has a great potential but it kind of left me with an unfulfilled feeling what with the multiple story arcs and only a smidge of PN. To me it almost felt a prequel rather than the first book of what will be a series. Of course I will pick up the next book because it sounds like it will be a good one and can't wait to see where it will go from here.

Killian (The Avalon Series Book 1) by Elizabeth Kelly
Killian (The Avalon Series Book 1) - Elizabeth Kelly

Prince Killian of Avalon, needs to flee his fairy kingdom after it is attacked, and his family is murdered. He seeks refuge in the human realm and can only return once he finds his true mate.

Killian is a wonderful and imaginative story. It is fast-paced and impeccably written. It is full of mystery, romance, drama, and fantasy.

Killian is a worthy leader and hero. My heart went out to him for all he suffered and lost. He would make an excellent King. He is kind, yet a warrior.

Reagan Lunsa is a fun character. She is an art student who makes jewelry for a living. She has had a difficult life but doesn’t let that get he down. She has some trust issues, but that is to be expected.

I enjoyed Claudia’s character and her connection to Kilian and Regan. She was a good friend to both, yet mysterious.

I liked the similarities between Killian and Reagan: Claudia and her gift to both; the poem they both knew; the story of the fairy prince and the moon goddess.

Killian ends in a cliff hanger, and I really want to know what happens next. I have a feeling it is going to be good.

Review: Avalon by Mindee Arnett
Avalon - Mindee Arnett

This one was a surprise for me. I'd seen a lot of mediocre reviews, that strangely vehemently compared it to Joss Whedon's Firefly, but then complained that it was, inf act, not enough like Firefly. I saw a definite influence, but I saw the influence of many more modern sci-fi franchises as well, such as video games like Mass Effect, and movie series like the Alien franchise. But it wasn't a pastiche. It took conventions I'd seen before and spun them into something new and exciting.

It's one of the few books I've read that steadily grew and grew in my estimation. I was set on a solid three-stars for about the first hundred pages, and then things got interesting, with its survival space horror vibe. It hiked up to five stars in the last hundred or so pages, with revelations I genuinely did not see coming. (And I had tried to guess!)

It was a bit of a rough start. Though I liked that it was so action oriented (hey, even a girlie-girl like me likes to take a break from the obligatory romance-drive YA) it felt like it didn't give the characters time to develop or really to grow a personality. It's once they leave on the Avalon, hero Jeth's private spacecraft, which now belongs to his boss (a big wig space crime crime lord!) and which he hopes to earn the money to buy back. Here I really felt the influence of movies like Alien and Event Horizon. The atmosphere was genuinely creepy, and there are some delightfully gory images here, as well.

The latter half of the book introduces the concept of aliens, and explains what this universe's version of hyperspace--meta-space--actually is. That's where it really won me over.

I will say, it's always upsetting to me what can and can't be shown in YA, or what the perception is. There's violence in this book. The lost spaceship the gang finds is filled with strangely eviscerated bodies. Jeth is ruthlessly tortured. But there's only the slightest hint of sex, and the vaguest nudge at the idea that he might be getting an erection while kissing a girl. I found this same inconsistency in Jonathan Maberry's Rot&Ruin series, too. Sex is something teenagers deal with; the adults who watch over these things need to deal with that very simple fact and stop making it dirty, something to hide, and normalizing violence on top of that.

Stepping back off of my soapbox, thank you.

An excellent, solid read. YA science-fiction that actually makes sense, that seems to be thought out and developed to its full potential. Give me more like these!
