Wide Awake
Wide Awake - Kade Boehme

First things first: I've read the revised edition - so I can't complain about the same grammatical and/or word choice issues like other readers did.

And I have to say, I can't complain a lot about the other stuff, either. Tyler, successful lawyer and by this time on his way to the big 3-0, had always had a crush on his best friend's father. Mark Riley on the other hand, struggled most of his life - with his path, with his decisions, with his career - basically with everything. But he was a devoted parent, a faithful husband (even without any love in the marriage), and a responsible adult. All of that changed one night, when these two meet each other in Mark's family home. Because Tyler, even as young as he was, was the first one in a long time to actually see Mark's loneliness and heartbreak.

Five years later, and Tyler has grown, is successful, still has his family and best friend. All he misses is a man. A real man he can go out with, fall for and enjoy his life with. The only one he really wants for that, though, is the only one he really shouldn't have. Because Mark, now divorced, out and a coffee shop owner, is still persona non grata in the family and circle of friends. There is literally no worse choice than for these two to hook up with each other. And guess what? The story starts with their very own morning after.

I really liked the premises for this story. May-September, adult males with some family-baggage, hooking up and falling lust/love. I was a little irritated with the telling of the backround at times. I really don't have to know all of the past happenings in both their lifes, told to me piece by piece. But, I guess, if you throw a reader in the middle of such a laden hook-up, you don't have a lot of choices.

Other than that, I enjoyed the developments and the conflicts quite a bit. The only other niggle? These guys could not take a break. Granted, they weren't really THAT careful, but every time they so much as breathed on each other, somebody who should definitely NOT be there, showed up. A little exhausting, and a little too soap-opera for me. But that's just me and my nit-picks tendencies.

All in all, I really enjoyed this story. Not Kade Boehme's best work, but still good. 3.5 stars all around.

Trained
Trained - N.M. Pratt

Oh, this was really good!

It was a sweet GFY, actually believable in pace, time and development. I loved how Brendon and Jared both had to grow and jump through some hoops in order to make it work.

Brendon, overweight and in a rut, gets trained and coached by Jared, the fit but emotionally completely unattached trainer. It was sweet, it was sexy and it was full to the brim with all the feelz. The solution might have been a little too easy, maybe? I'm not sure, but that's really just a minor niggle.

What I liked was how the author really tried to get it right. Getting Brendon to be fitter and sexier was never all there was to his training. He also built up his confidence, he felt better and surer about his body; and it showed in the way he handled and carried himself in everyday life. It was all done in a way that didn't scream: "You can only be happy if your slim and beautiful!". That was something I was concerned about going in, because I see some dangers in this line of thinking. But like I said, the author got it right in a way that made it all work for me in the end. Really good, not too heavy, but intense and emotional nontheless. Definitely recommended.

Six
Six - Tara Spears

Well, this was different. Good different, but different.

You get to meet two single dads, both somewhat lonely, both have their own issues. And then they meet each other and things get interesting. Especially the tango between the sheets - or on a chair - gets really, really interesting.

What surprised me the most was how big parts of the story came out of effing nowhere, and still worked for me. I was so certain I knew how things would go down, but let me tell you, they sure as hell took a turn or three I did NOT see coming! Which is pretty awesome for a free, somewhat short story I picked up "by accident". 4 stars all around, with a little cherry on top for all the surprises that kept me so entertained!

Nor Iron Bars a Cage
Nor Iron Bars a Cage - Kaje Harper

5 fantastic fantastical stars!

Oh dear, this was GOOOD. Color me amazed!

Let me explain why I'm so surprised and blown away by this story, and why I was very hestitant to pick it up. First of all, I am not a huge fan of the cover. I know, I know! Don't judge a book by it's cover. I really don't. But I can't help it, I do tend to pick up a book sooner if I really like the cover. Ergo, when I'm really not happy with a book cover, the blurb has to make up for it or else I'll probably have it sitting on my TBR shelf for a long time. Not proud of it, but that's what it is. Thank god, the blurb here was very good! A former sorcerer, trapped in his self-imposed isolation is forced to face his past, and conquer his future after being summoned by the King.

Which brings me to my second "issue". I like the fantasy genre a lot, but I'm always a little... cautious when I pick up a story written by an author I'm not familiar with in this particular genre. Because fantasy is not easy to write, and I tend to be a little nit-picky. The art of creating a new world, building it in a believable and comprehensible way, AND adding an intriguing plot with three-dimensional characters to the mix, is something that not every author is good at. Especially when they only have a month and a half to do it.

And then there came Kaje Harper. Boy, did she pull it off and pull it off good. This story was absolutely amazing on many different levels. Harper's writing has been a favorite of mine for a long time now. She's just really, really good at what she does, and it always shows. She gets the tone and pace right, every story has its' own style, but you always recognize her hand in it. Her characters are three-dimensional, with flaws and strenghts and weaknesses. So loveable, all of them! What really knocked me over here though, was her ability to create an alternative world that made sense and that I understood, without adding a very lenghty description of every little detail. It all just fell into place as the story wore on and I loved it!

Lyon's story, while absolutely heart-breaking, was very emotional but hopeful at the same time. There are some dark themes included here, but the overall tone of the story was not dark or depressing. On the contrary, the slow and careful development of a relationship and Lyon's hard fight out of his own personal hell were timed perfectly, carefully crafted and so believeable. Tobin, too, was a gem. So patient, sweet and understanding. Full of love, strenght, respect and commitment. I adored him, and I loved him and Lyon together.

I don't want to talk about the story more then I already have, because there are some big surprises here and an unbelievably good Bang! at the end. It's such a pleasure to read the action scenes, because Kaje Harper has them down pat. I can only say: READ IT! Seriously, if you like hurt/comfort, a wonderfully wholesome fantasy world, and the sweetest love between two complex men, PICK. THIS. UP. I promise, you won't be disappointed!
