Type matters

I'm a total typography nerd, one of my early jobs was copy-editor at a newspaper (I know, hard to believe, my posts are shockingly riddled with typos and errors, but it's true!) and one of my favourite things to do was watch the page designers put together the days editions.

Anyway, I was helping daughter run down sources for a school project, and we came across these two wee short documentaries.

The first is a wee movie about the old Fleet Street presses for the Telegraph in London, used right up until the 80's, which is really cool. It runs about 6 minutes

The other is a 20 minute documentary from Penguin that talks to lots of their type designers about fonts, type design, book design, etc. It's a bit cheesy, but I enjoyed it.

Changing fonts in a post.

If it is one of the "browser safe" fonts(list) I believe you can just do this:

I'll use Tahoma for this example.

"Someday, I'm going to meet some supernatural creature who tells me everything I should know up front and in a forthright manner - but I'm not going to hold my breath." - Patricia Briggs (River Marked)

Here is what is going on in my HTML code:

If you want to use Google Fonts you need to add the bit of code they give you to your blog HTML.

I'll use Electrolize for this example.

First, I took this code Google Fonts gave me:

and put it right bellow the < head > tag in my Blog HTML:

Now it's possible to use Electrolize as a font-family:

"Someday, I'm going to meet some supernatural creature who tells me everything I should know up front and in a forthright manner - but I'm not going to hold my breath." - Patricia Briggs (River Marked)

Here's what's in the HTML:

Don't forget to capitalize the font name.

I hope this is understandable. :)

I Have No Clue What I'm Doing Here

Is this a blog? Is this like a tumblr for books (sure looks like it), is this a Goodreads?

Is it against the rules to post anything that is not about books?

Just trying this out, I'll figure out how everything works at some point in my life...

Welcome! I am Karen and I love reading. Literally I am in the middle of at least 2 books at any given moment, usually more. I mostly read YA stuff but sometimes I branch off in weird directions like I once read a book about fonts? And it was good?

Yeah, so I will definitely be posting what books I read (and you'll want to keep on top of those because my taste in books is impeccable, says me) and writing reviews on a lot of them.

What I would like to put out there is to communicate with me! Tell me you disagree! Tell me I am perfect! Ask me what I'm up to. Ask me to check out your page/blog/thing! It would make me the happiest girl in the world.

Just My Type: A Book about Fonts
Just My Type: A Book about Fonts - Large swaths of this book are excellent. There are a few chapters I could have done without, such as the chapter on font personality quizzes, but overall, this is a good introduction to many different fonts. I read the ebook and was pleasantly surprised to see so many of the fonts actually embedded in the file. In a few cases there were rendering artifacts caused by this, but it wasn't terribly distracting. There was a bit of trouble with the editing, however. Every new chapter had a set of run-on words between the first and second page which would have been caught by anyone reading the text, so I'm not sure how that was left in. In any case, worth a read as an easy to get into intro to type.
