A Kilted Christmas Wish
A Kilted Christmas Wish - Eliza Knight

This fell flat for me.  I didn't believe Darla and Aaron's romance.  Aaron lost his fiance approx 4 months ago.  He moved to NY for change of scenery (and he conveniently had a nice job- his dad was retiring and he is taking over).  Here is why the romance just didn't work for me:

Aaron's fiance was in a car accident and was in a coma/vegetative state for "weeks."  Aaron wanted her kept alive.  Megan's parents wanted life support withdrawn.  After a protracted fight, her parents won and life support was removed.  This story had him falling in love and proposing within 1 month after meeting Darla.  I felt this was too soon.  If it had been a year or so, no problem.  But 4 months?  Nah.

Not for me
To Kiss a Kilted Warrior - Rowan Keats

No animal attack in this one to give it an extra star. It's been a long time since I read the previous book in the series so I had forgotten a lot and pretty much had no idea what was going on (there is a continuing mystery/whodunnit villain thread through the series). Rushed romance and slow plot. I think this author's writing style just isn't for me and I'm going to bow out of this series.

Hot For The Scot (Kilted Heroes Book 1)
Hot For The Scot (Kilted Heroes Book 1) - Janice Maynard Think Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants meets Outlander. That describes Hot for the Scot by Janice Maynard perfectly. Although I have never been swept up in the craze drawn by the aforementioned movie, show and books, I loved this one. These sisters of the heart have drifted apart but are united by their love of a revered book Outlander and their fantasies about Scotland. They journey to the land of their dreams, where adventure waits and maybe even romance. Hot for the Scot is the first book of the Kilted Heroes series. Hayley stumbles into her own romance novel, learns about herself and has to make important choices. I requested an ARC of Hot for the Scot from NetGalley. A great blend of fantasy, reality and romance.

Hot for the Scot by Janice Maynard
Hot For The Scot (Kilted Heroes Book 1) - Janice Maynard

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Hayley and her two friends are big Outlander fans, so a trip to Scotland sounds like a dream. However, in order to insure they have the adventure of a lifetime, they decide to split up and forgo modern electronics and will only communicate with each other if they are in trouble. Hayley's adventure starts off a bit rough when she falls into a loch but her rescuer makes it all worth it. Angus is fascinated with the American who refuses to use a cell phone and in-between rescuing her, her landlord, and his mother from a flood, he can't wait to get to know her more. Hayley's trip might not exactly copy Claire's but she just might get her own happily ever after.

If you're a fan of Outlander (and Harry Potter) and have ever dreamt about finding yourself in that heroine's shoes, then you might find this book full of fun whimsy. Our heroine Hayley frequently mentions that book, the landmarks that appear in the series, and how she desperately wants to meet her own Jamie Fraser. For me, she mentioned it so much I wanted to sit her down and say "You do realize you can't actually travel back in time and meet Jamie Fraser, right?”. Hayley's character was a bit head in the clouds and her and her friends plan to take a trip together to Scotland only to separate and not be allowed to use electronics (but apparently they can watch t.v. and drive cars) felt a bit odd.

The whole story is first person, told from Hayley's point of view. As typically happens for me when this writing style is used, I missed knowing and feeling our hero's point of view. I never felt Angus' depth; he seemed very walled off, until the last chapter where feelings are declared. Their relationship felt forced and I'm not sure I ever felt any chemistry. The book is a pretty quick read and never felt slow but our couple's relationship felt rushed, even as nothing was really happening. They like each other and I definitely got that they wanted to sleep together but the substance and details that I enjoy reading that lead to characters falling in love was missing.

There's plenty of detail of the town Hayley is staying at, with a good amount of touristy information that makes it obvious the author really did her homework or she has visited. The character of the country Scotland came through at times but our hero and heroine were not so lucky. Hayley's landlord was a great secondary character, she had a little background story that made me feel for her and enough personality to fill the pages but not butt in. Angus' mother was the other main secondary character and the mini role of villain felt pushed on her.

As I said, this is a quick read but I felt it lacked spark, charm, and the main couple's romance was fairly dry. The storyline of a single woman looking for love in Scotland, having a meet cute, pulling together in a crisis event, having a mini struggle/miscommunication, and an eventual happily ever after, can be found many times over in contemporary romance. Unfortunately, this book didn't distance itself from the rest for me.

Had Good Elements But Missed My Mark
THE IMMORTAL'S REDEMPTION - Kelli Ireland

Beginning it Scotland 1718 Dylan is a young impatient assassin being forced to wait for his services to be needed. Danu the Mother of all, appeared to him and showed him a vision of something he instantly wanted it was also like nothing he’d seen before. A great and wondrous challenge would be in his future. It centered around a beautiful woman he must first find in time, then he must face his truth to prevent world wide chaos if he fails. Not much pressure right ? Fast forward 300 years to our time and our sexy immortal assassin is finally called to action when the vision’s time has finally come and oh dear, she is a carrier of something very wicked. Danu, shows up again and reveals that he must find the truth or he must sacrifice to save the world. No easy choices here. On top of all that this woman gives him feelings, feelings suffocate and confuse the mind, and he doesn’t have time for that.
Kennedy Jefferson woke up confused, in a hospital, muddled memories and lost time haunt her. Her family has a history of mental unstableness and she fears she is heading to the looney bin herself. She is acting abnormal, losing time and clings to her BFF Ethan, for comfort. While leaving the hospital she comes face to face with the most striking man with burning green eyes. Yes, it’s hubba hubba time. He is here for her, but why and what for ?
Ethan, her BFF is not the simpleton Dylan thinks he is. He has his own brand of secret mojo powers and knows Dylan as a top assassin. His mojo is nothing compared the the Druid Powers but I think there is a lot more hidden. His part is small but I have to say he is the BFF every girl wants in her corner.
Gareth, is a sexy Irishman, second in command to Dylan. He is tan, muscled, honey colored hair with light blue eyes surrounded by laugh lines. He dresses in faded jeans and cream colored sweaters. Oh thud goes my heart, it’s the look that this reader LOVES. He also serves up a wicked Irish coffee that will kick you into orbit if you don’t watch out. He’s a young sexy flirt who just happens to be a deadly Druid assassin.
There are other side characters that fit in well with the story. Dylan’s father who reminded me of Darth Vader to Luke Skywalker. Rowan the dark stoic strong type of man who watched and remained steady through all the drama. I have high hopes for this guy. He is a smoking hot man waiting to jump on his own story. I like a difficult introvert character.
There was a lot going on in this story. I would have loved to see more of the secondary characters, they intrigued me more than the main characters. The story, myths and possible future events were fascinating. Unfortunately Kennedy, the main female character was not someone I’d like to visit again. She was the only piece of the story I didn’t care for. Sadly she was a major player and irked me to the end. I was confused when she gained important knowledge that she hadn’t had a few pages earlier. I’m guessing it was from her moments of blanks that she suffered, but it was never mentioned and felt very choppy. She was unbelievable to me and lacked that something that made the other characters stories complete and easy to identify with. She was uninteresting for the same reason. I have read this authors work before an have loved it, this one just wasn’t for me. I hope you’ll give it a try and judge for yourself. Let me know your impressions I love to discuss different opinions.
