By Fairy Means or Foul (Starfig Investigations #1) by Meghan Maslow
By Fairy Means or Foul: A Starfig Investigations Novel - Meghan Maslow

Similar books: Lord MouseThick as Thieves

This book is a light humorous adventure/quest.

Brandsome the Unicorn lost his horn. He hires a PI named Twig, half-dragon/half-elf, who takes the job and promises to find the horn in question and bring it back.

Being put down as a collateral for down payment, Quinn, the unicorn's human sex slave, takes on the role of a side-kick to Twig.

After three years of slavery and abuse, Quinn is happy for a short break, even more so because he adores his handsome new (if temporary) master. Of course, there are flashbacks and discussions of slavery under unicorn's hoof, but Quinn is living in the moment and enjoying his short freedom, not wanting to dwell on his misery. Twig treats him like an equal, at the same time being a bit on over-protective side due to his dragon-half mating surges. Twig Starfig is tough and rough, but knows firsthand how the rest of the world treats those who don't fit in it perfectly.

The odd couple - a plain non-magical human pet and a half-breed - travels around the realm, playing dangerous card games with elves, boarding ghost ships, fighting zombies, drinking tea with cyclopes and making acquaintances with demons in penis-shaped castles (yep, that's a thing!).

There is a bit of angst in the end, seeing how Quinn can't go back to Brandsome-the-Unicorn, not if Twig has any say in it, but mostly this book is about adventure and how it brings two odd creatures together. Love conquers all, they say =) Well, that and a very influential father-elf ;)

Nor Iron Bars a Cage by Kaje Harper
Nor Iron Bars a Cage - Kaje Harper

I would love to know more about pretty much everyone in this book (other than Lyon and Xen). More about Tobin and the king. More about that annoying captain, who drove Lyon crazy in the second part of the story. There is So. Much! Loved it.

The Paranormal Detection Agency by Anne Brooke
The Paranormal Detection Agency - Anne Brooke

3.5 because of horror and long sex scenes, I find both boring (in general). Rounding up to 4, since it's not really anyone's problem but mine.

UPDATE: I sorted out the emails and fixed read count for this book, but I am leaving my rant where it is.

What The F, GoodReads? I have never read this book and yet it says I've read it twice already. I try and tinker with the dates and no matter what I do, it still counts for at least ONE PREVIOUS READ.

And what is it with e-mails telling me I finished a book I just finished. I KNOW I finished it. I READ IT. I MARKED IT ASREAD. I don't need to be informed via e-mail, too.

Why won't GR fix community shelves instead? They are at dinosaurs' stage still!!!

GAHHHH!!!!!

Animal Instinct (Duncan Andrews Thrillers #2) by Stephen Osborne
Animal Instinct - Stephen Osborne

I am kind of mad at Gina for sleeping through the whole ordeal. Her father. Her troubles. Yet it's Dunc who ends up in all kinds of trouble.

Still, great fun :)

He Speaks Dead by Adrienne Wilder
He Speaks Dead - Adrienne Wilder

Damn, Briggs!

I am not happy! :/

How can Charlie and Ethan live with themselves after all, I have no idea. This book made me mad :(

I read some reviews and I am glad to find out that I am not the only one who is upset about Briggs being disposable. He was treated like crap during the whole book, used and abused through its entirety (except for the first chapter, granted)

only to be killed off without a second thought in the end.

(spoiler show)

While Ethan is at least reflecting on the events of the fateful night in the epilogue, Charlie is perfectly cool with having a bright new shiny Ethan in a mighty meat-suit all to himself. Who's Briggs again? Only a person who saved their asses and the world :/ But - not a pause, not a care.

Anyway, I do realise RL is a bitch, but the two MC's are total and complete jerks. The last chapter made me despise Charie. And I don't understand how the author could do it to her character, leaving him a heartless, callused jerk.
