By Fairy Means or Foul (Starfig Investigations #1) by Meghan Maslow
By Fairy Means or Foul: A Starfig Investigations Novel - Meghan Maslow

Similar books: Lord MouseThick as Thieves

This book is a light humorous adventure/quest.

Brandsome the Unicorn lost his horn. He hires a PI named Twig, half-dragon/half-elf, who takes the job and promises to find the horn in question and bring it back.

Being put down as a collateral for down payment, Quinn, the unicorn's human sex slave, takes on the role of a side-kick to Twig.

After three years of slavery and abuse, Quinn is happy for a short break, even more so because he adores his handsome new (if temporary) master. Of course, there are flashbacks and discussions of slavery under unicorn's hoof, but Quinn is living in the moment and enjoying his short freedom, not wanting to dwell on his misery. Twig treats him like an equal, at the same time being a bit on over-protective side due to his dragon-half mating surges. Twig Starfig is tough and rough, but knows firsthand how the rest of the world treats those who don't fit in it perfectly.

The odd couple - a plain non-magical human pet and a half-breed - travels around the realm, playing dangerous card games with elves, boarding ghost ships, fighting zombies, drinking tea with cyclopes and making acquaintances with demons in penis-shaped castles (yep, that's a thing!).

There is a bit of angst in the end, seeing how Quinn can't go back to Brandsome-the-Unicorn, not if Twig has any say in it, but mostly this book is about adventure and how it brings two odd creatures together. Love conquers all, they say =) Well, that and a very influential father-elf ;)

The Chimera (Bound Gods #1) by Adrienne Wilder
Bound Gods: The Chimera - Adrienne Wilder

Frigging brilliant! My only complaint is that Kaleb is not suffering the change of scenery enough. He must have had friends, he must have had hopes and ambitions and plans, like being in college, obtaining freedom from his father. Maybe the reality is yet to settle in? :D

Looking forward to the next installment.

PS
There are problems with editing, but I am choosing to ignore them since they were not too bad.
Mixed up "he, she" in reference to Kaleb's trans male brother drove me bonkers. There should be "He" in this book with this particular set of characters, no way around it.

Captive Wolf (Love Slaves of the Alphas #5) by Shannon West
Captive Wolf - Shannon West

DNF-ing at 50%.

Bored out of my wits.

Despite all of the exciting tags I chose, this book is a fraud.

"Honeys", "sweethears", "babies" and other tooth-aching sugary nicknames applied to a mansel-in-distress-alpha-male are, indeed, revolting.

Characters are weak and, frankly, stupid. Conversations are stilted. Neither Taz, a tiger, nor Kyle, a lycan, are listening to each other, just carrying on with their own meaningless egotistic blubber. The writing is immature, editing is non-existent and the plot is almost non-existent. The whole book, quite honestly, can be squeezed into a dozen pages or less, considering that the majority of it is useless boring infodump anyway. Do I care about some random bar tender's background and family history? Really? REALLY? @.@ Taz comes off too grand-motherly (cookies and spankings anyone? =)) and Kyle, a lycan alpha, - a whiny spoiled 5-year old brat in need of hugs and kisses and butt plugs.

***

*air quotes*The PLOT*air quotes*:

Kyle and his buddy (relative? I don't give a rat's ass) decide to kidnap a Big Bad powerful Tyger shifter from a bar that he owns. They come up with a stupidest plan... wait... what am I saying? They HAVE NO PLAN! Kid you not, true story!

Anyway, they come up with some stupid excuse. Kyle goes in and never comes out. The Big Bad Tyger kidnaps Kyle instead, puts him in a dog cage and delivers him to his brother Taz, who hates the hell out of Lycans (make no mistake, Lycans loath Tygerians right frigging back), but Taz needs a lover and a nanny!!!!! for his children. Perfect. Those two are all set. Happy end!

PS

I really REALLy want my money back! The whole $0.99 of it!!!

review SPOILER ALERT! 2015-01-04 16:52
Jonah's Giant by Rowan McBride
Jonah's Giant - Rowan McBride Jonah's Giant - Rowan McBride

Kynthos, so glad you convinced me to read this story!

The way it ends doesn't feel 100% finished, but the ending is somewhat satisfying, if cliffhang-y.

And now - on the world building conundrum.

It was made very clear that the story is set in modern times, in our everyday reality, the only "fantasy" element being Jeremy's profound growth.

SPOILER-ISH BELOW

So, instead of concentrating on men's interaction, I was worried about Jonah losing his job and his house (at least make him live off some trust fund, not rich, but carefree, so we don't have to have it nagging). I was puzzled why Jeremy's parents couldn't call police, like any sensible adult in this reality would do. No other neighbours, co-workers, employer raised an alarm. I know I am overthinking, but give me a world, and I will think about it and try to incorporate it into the story... right? O.o In this case it distracted me and pulled me out of the story at least a couple of times :/

I will take Kari Gregg anytime.

Still the book was pretty good and well written and I would love for the sequel to come out. Sometime soon :)
