Single Malt Murder
Single Malt Murder: A Whisky Business Mystery - Melinda Mullet

Single Malt Murder weaves a twisty tale of greed, murder and whisky into a captivating cozy mystery. Set in the idyllic Scottish Highlands, Abi inherits a whisky distillery from her uncle and suddenly finds herself the target of threats and sabotage. When a young man from the village is found dead in a vat of whisky, Abi is determined to find out who is sabotaging her uncle’s distillery and just what’s important enough to kill for.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one, the history and methods of the whisky making process are neatly woven into the story, although I’m not a drinker, I do like to know how things work and it really enhanced the story for me and set the book apart. The twisty, suspenseful plot kept a steady pace and I liked that the author left a few plot lines open to be developed in future books. How will Abi juggle her photojournalist career with a distillery? Will her romance with the hunky Grant lure her to live in Scotland, or will she hang on to her photojournalism career in London? Lots of places to grow, and I definitely want to come come back for more. Add in likable, engaging and quirky characters (I really liked Abi and her three adjectives!) and an exciting ending and you’ve got an excellent debut cozy and a promising start to a new series.

Single Malt Murder by Melinda Mullet
Single Malt Murder: A Whisky Business Mystery - Melinda Mullet

When Abigail Logan's Uncle Ben dies and leaves her a whiskey distillery, the world traveled photographer is at a lost in what to do with a whiskey distillery?! With her best friend and whiskey expert Patrick and her wheaten terrier Liam in tow. She goes to see what her Uncle Ben's life was like in the small Scottish Highlands village and this old distillery. Even before she can set eyes on the place, she starts getting odd and strange threats. Thinking it was just a bit of misogyny on a woman running a whiskey distillery, that thought is blow outta the water when a dead body of an employee is found dead in one of the vat. Now Abi is trying to find out who is trying to close down the distillery and untangle everyone's hidden motives..

Finding a new cozy mystery series that catches you right at the start is like finding a new favorite dish or drink? I was quickly wrapped up in the world Melinda Mullet created in Single Malt Muder.

I enjoyed the cast of characters, in Abi you have someone whose witness and seen much through the lens of her camera. This gives her an different perspective with people and places. This is a huge strength that helps her with all the clues thrown her way. Abi is in no way some perfect person. She can be hard-headed and a bit blind to those around her. Much like her Uncle Ben and his love for the distillery, something she has to overcome in her jealousy of her only family member, and see how much Ben wanted her to be a part of. The rest of the cast of characters are slowly touch upon but nothing to concrete which I think is an opening for the rest of the series.

Abi does have a future suitor in the work (maybe) and I did like the interaction between the two that starts off pretty rocky and ends up with a great understanding of one another and a little bit more?

I enjoyed the mystery of the story, when you think it was going one way, the clues would point another direction and while I had my suspicion on who was behind it, I was still surprised when it all came together in the end.
Along with the distillery, the village is very rich with characters and even more places to explore, I can't wait to see more from this series!

The Side Effects Of Making Christmas Presents

I have just finished cooking some glasses of pear-whisky-jam, as part of the presents for the family, and I fear that I have inhaled a bit too much of its vapor, because now I feel quite intoxicated.

Great, it's not yet noon around here, and I'm drunk.

I guess I'd better wait with preparing S.O.'s birthday cake until I'm sober again.

Soraidh

"Slàinte mhor a h-uile là a chi 's nach fhaic" ... or, "Great health to you every day that I see you and every day that I don't" -- in other words, have a great time.

(And, yes, I blindly copied that from various online resources, so don't blame me if it's wrong.)

Anyway, I'm off for a 10-day vacation in Scotland (yey), followed by a 2-day family event back home in Germany (not so yey).  (I won't be leaving for Scotland until Tuesday, but my internet connection is down server-side -- I'm typing this on my mom's PC -- and I'm not sure it's going to be back up again by tomorrow.)

Whereas on previous trips to Scotland, it was all about the Eastern and Central Lowlands, and the Western and Central Higlands and Islands, this time I'll be visiting the Orkneys, the North Coast, and the Eastern Highlands.

I have it on good authority that this stuff will be featuring as well:

... plus, I suspect, plenty of sheep, castles, nature, and the odd neolythic site.  Oh, and an Edinburgh Fringe rendez-vous with the HandleBards, whom I first saw in Stratford-upon-Avon last year.

As I'm not sure if I'll be logging into Booklikes in the next 2 weeks, go well everybody -- see you all again in September!
