Fun Sci-fi Romance
Close Encounters of the Sexy Kind - Karen Kelley

Close Encounters Of The Sexy Kind is my first book by Karen Kelley.  I don't usually pick anything sci-fi when choosing books, but something about this one caught me.  So glad I downloaded it.  Ms Kelley has delivered a book that is part paranormal, part romance and 100% fun.  This book is well-written.  The characters are fantastic and perfect for this story.  Mala and Mason's story is loaded with drama, humor and sizzle.  I enjoyed reading Close Encounters Of The Sexy Kind and would be happy to read more from Karen Kelley in the future.  Close Encounters Of The Sexy Kind is book 1 of the Planet Nerak Series but can be read as a standalone.  This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

It is Monday.

What could cheer us up?

Men in Uniform. Yep. But I need something a little different. Vampires, witches, werewolves.

How about some Sheriffs in Paranormal Romance?

My lists are never in any particular order. We have some Sheriff Heroines here too!

Enjoy!

1. Ghost Seer by Robin D. Owens

When her eccentric aunt passes away, no-nonsense accountant Clare Cermac inherits more than just a small fortune. She receives the gift of communicating with ghosts. While Clare may not believe in spirits, it’s hard to overlook the shadowy talking dog appearing on her bed or spectral cowboys tipping their hats to her in the streets of Denver. And when she locks eyes with sexy—and living—Zach Slade, there’s certainly no ignoring him either.

A former deputy sheriff, Zach is leaving a painful past behind in Montana for a new life in Denver as a private investigator, a job that has him crossing paths with beautiful Clare. Not that she minds. After the restless ghost of a Wild West gunman demands her assistance, Clare finds herself needing Zach more and more—and not just for help.

2. Moon's Fury by C. T. Adams

Cara Salinas has been leading the small Mexican red wolf pack in Tedford County, Texas, since she was thirteen.

Adam Mueller, formerly a beat cop from the toughest part of Minneapolis and now the new county sheriff, must find a way to integrate his exiled Minnesotan wolves with Cara's red wolves.

Cara and Adam clash in the way only fated mates ever do--and both refuse to accept their destiny. But when a pack of vicious Sazi raptors start to feed on the wolf-children of both packs, Cara and Adam must learn to respect each other, and embrace their future together to save the future of the Texan wolves.

3. The Slayer by Theresa Meyers

Winn Jackson isn't interested in hunting nightmares across the Wild West--even if it's the family business. Unlike his rakehell brothers, Winn believes in rules. As sheriff of Bodie, California, he only shoots actual law breakers. That's what he's doing when he rescues the Contessa Drossenburg, Alexandra Porter, a lady with all the elegance of the Old World--grace, beauty and class. And then he sees her fangs.

Alexandra isn't just some bloodsucking damsel in distress, though. She's on a mission to save her people--and she's dead certain that Winn's family legacy is the only way. Luckily, aside from grace and class, she also has a stubborn streak a mile wide. So like it or not, Winn is going to come back with her to the mountains of Transylvania, and while he's at it, change his opinions about vampires, demon-hunting, and who exactly deserves shooting. And if she has her way, he's going to do his darnedest to save the world. . .

4. Now or Never: Wizards of Nevermore by Michele Bardsley

Tormented by nightmares of a woman's death, Sheriff Taylor Mooreland is shocked to find the woman from his visions chained to an altar in the woods. He barely knows her, but something compels Taylor to protect the mysterious Lenore Whyte no matter what. Even if it means dealing with magic.

And when an investigation into a series of suicides leads Taylor deep into the town's past, he discovers that the key to saving Lenore and the town of Nevermore may have a surprising connection...

5. A Mate for the Beta by E A Price

Wolfs and witches don’t mix. So what happens when a wolf and a witch are true mates?

Alec Hart, Sheriff of Rose, Virginia and Beta to the Grey Wolf Pack never expected to find a mate. His own angry nature meant that he avoided relationships at all costs, not wanting to tie any woman to a violent wolf. But when he gets a whiff the sweet vanilla scent of his mate he’s powerless to resist...

Sweet young plump witch Livia Briers never thought she would ever have a shot with the handsome older wolf, instead choosing to lust after him from afar. But drawn together by the disappearance of a local witch can she really keep her hands off him?

Can a witch and a wolf find happiness together? Or will the prejudices of others tear them apart?

6. Making Magic by Donna June Cooper

During his law enforcement career, Sheriff Jake Moser has been called to Woodruff Mountain a few times to deal with some rather weird situations. Now, recovering from a bullet wound that should have killed him and fending off his mother’s ravings about the evil that lurks on the mountain, he’s making alternate career plans.

Just as those plans begin to take shape, someone starts kidnapping newborn babies, then returning them unharmed. To make things even more interesting, an irritating adversary from his past has returned to bedevil him in a whole new, delightful way.

After her erratic psychic gift forced her to abandon her home and a promising musical career, Thea Woodruff has spent years trying, unsuccessfully, to atone for the death of Becca Moser, Jake’s sister. Once she has mourned those she’s lost and apologized to those she’s failed, she intends to flee her mountain once again.

Jake would rather she stay to compose a new tune—with him. But their complicated harmony reveals a guilty secret that threatens not only their future, but their lives…

7. Kiss of Darkness by Jennifer St. Giles

Werewolf warriors sworn to protect two worlds, the Shadowmen band with their human allies in a desperate battle against the forces of evil. But when one of the comrades is injured, it is to a mortal woman's healing magic they must turn....

When Sheriff Sam Sheridan is wounded in an encounter with the malevolent Dr. Cinatas and his Vladarian vampires, a dark infection courses through his blood, releasing inner demons he has long denied. Although guarded from further assault by his Shadowmen companions, Sam is forced to turn for healing to Emerald Linton -- a woman he has always believed to be a New Age fake. Even worse, with his barriers brought low, Sam can no longer deny the desire he has long felt for the lovely Irishwoman.

Many years before, Emerald was unable to save the father of her child from the evil powers that had enslaved him. Now, as Sam reluctantly entrusts himself to her, those old fears and regrets become painfully fresh. Dare she use her magical abilities in an attempt to rescue Sam? And -- as a searing passion flares between them -- dare she entrust her heart again?Werewolf warriors sworn to protect two worlds, the Shadowmen band with their human allies in a desperate battle against the forces of evil. But when one of the comrades is injured, it is to a mortal woman's healing magic they must turn....

8. Close Encounters of the Sexy Kind by Karen Kelley

Beam Me Up, Hottie . . . Sex with the perfect man is overrated, especially if your Mr. Perfect is a robot, and you know there's something better out there. Can Mala help it if "out there" is way out there? Her grandmother, an intergalactic traveler, left a diary behind describing the exceptional lovemaking talents of Earth men. There's also a documentary that depicts a comely young woman and a rugged-looking person she calls "Sheriff" There are no Sheriffs on Mala's home planet. Solution? Head for Earth and get one of her own . . . Sheriff Mason McKinley is having one hell of a week. First, the local conspiracy theorist called a bunch of reporters to town in search of Bigfoot, and now he insists he's seen a UFO land out near Devil's Bend. But when Mason rides out to investigate, instead of little green men, he finds the sexiest woman he's ever laid eyes on. Though Mala's odd behavior-an obsession with the naked channel, straightforward offers of sex-might have something to do with amnesia, what red-blooded American male wouldn't feel lucky? Still, Mason doesn't want to take advantage of a lost soul . . . however much she wants to be taken advantage of

9. Harmony's Way by Lora Leigh

Harmony Lancaster is of the Lion breed, created to be a huntress with a thirst to kill. But the way she seeks justice outside of the law makes her a liability to her own kind. Yet she also possesses information that they need on the existence of the First Leo—who holds the precious secrets of desire.

To save her life, Harmony is paired with Sheriff Lance Jacobs, who tries to tame the killer within her, while protecting the gentle woman he longs to possess. But a dangerous cult leader, bent on destroying the Breeds, could change the way Lance looks at Harmony forever…

10.  Hidden Currents by Christine Feehan

Kidnapped by Stavros Gratsos, a powerful and sadistic psychic businessman, Elle Drake, the fiery-tempered telepathic youngest of the magically gifted Drake sisters, is rescued by her family and the man she loves, Jackson Deveau, but returns home a shattered shell. Jackson gradually draws her out of her mental hell, but Stavros wants Elle back, and he threatens to destroy everyone she loves to make it happen. While this is definitely Elle and Jackson's story, the Drake sisters and their mates join the fierce battle for their lives and their family's magical heritage.

Happy Cinco de Mayo! I wish you beautiful paper flowers and Marachis to serenade you.

I gather up a list of Romance Novels set in Mexico to celebrate.

This list reveals that we have a long way to go in Romanceland in our depictions of Mexico. Drug Cartels and Vactation Resorts reign.  There are a few historicals that tell differnt stories but if you are a writer there are lot of wonderful stories waiting to be told in this setting.  Like everything else.

None the less, here are fun Romances set in Mexico for your reading pleasure.

My lists are never in any particular order.

1. Wild Orchids by Karen Robards (I adore this book.)

Prim mid-western schoolteacher Lora Harding is in for the summer vacation of her life when darkly handsome American Max Maxwell slides into her rented car in steamy Cancun, Mexico and orders her to “drive” at gunpoint. Max and his men break Americans out of Mexican jails for a living, but his latest job has gone horribly wrong and Max is on the run for his life. Kidnapping Lora, Max takes her on a heart-stopping adventure as he races to rejoin his men and get out of the country before the authorities can catch up to him. Feisty Lora fights him every step of the way, and in the midst of saving each other’s lives the two fall madly in love in this blistering novel of romantic suspense by the “mistress of sizzling sensuality” (Romantic Times).

2. Daughter of Fortune by Carla Kelly

Maria Espinosa should not have survived the 1679 cholera epidemic in Mexico City that killed her parents, already reeling from the loss of their fortune, nor should she have survived an Apache raid on the caravan transporting her to a sister in remote Santa Fe, in the royal colony of New Mexico. Rejected by her sister because she is penniless, Maria struggles to stay alive in a society unaware of impending disaster. A charismatic Tewa Indian named Popé is determined to drive the hated European overlords from the land. Maria’s refuge is no refuge at all. When Mary is taken in by a Spanish ranching family living uneasily among the Pueblo Indians, her beauty and spirit inspire a rivalry between two brothers—one a Spaniard, the other half-Indian. Will she find security and purpose in this harsh land only to lose her heart? In the midst of personal turmoil, Maria discovers a rare talent in this colony of believers. She learns how to carve discarded branches and tree stumps into statues of saints. She also learns the larger lesson: that grace can transform an object of little value into a masterpiece. But trouble lies ahead. Maria can reveal the saint buried in a block of wood. What mysteries lie deep within her own heart?

3. The Book of True Desires by Betina Krahn

Cordelia O'Keefe hoped to convince her wealthy grandfather, Samuel P. Blackburn, to provide the financial backing for her latest expedition, but Blackburn insists that Cordelia first find the "Gift of the Jaguar" for him. So she agrees to track down the three Mayan carvings that are thought to be the key to locating a legendary treasure hidden somewhere in Mexico. It turns out though that Blackburn isn't through with his demands. Not only does he insist on sending his British butler, Hartford Goodnight, on the expedition as his representative, but he also gives Hartford complete control of all travel funds. The last person Cordelia wants trekking with her through the dangerous jungles is a stuffy, sarcastic, and always superior servant like Hartford, but it turns out that the annoying, sexy Hartford is surprisingly resourceful, too. A delightfully sharp-tongued heroine matches wits and wiles with an equally stubborn hero in the latest of Krahn's imaginative late-Victorian historical romances. Laced with a generous dash of humor and expertly spiced with plenty of action and adventure, The Book of True Desires is simply superb. John Charles Copyright © American Library Association

4. Moonlight and Margaritas by Cindy Stark

She wants tonight…

Elena Porter is off to Cabo San Lucas in search of excitement. Her business is blooming, and she's dumped her controlling ex-husband. An island fling is just what she needs to start living again.

He wants forever…

Joe Stephens escaped his stifling corporate lifestyle, preferring to spend his days as a dive instructor. He thinks the sun, senoritas and cervezas will fill the emptiness inside him, but even they fail to inspire the passion he's searching for.

Will his love send her running for the border?

Then Elena blows in like a sultry island breeze, and their time together rivals the sizzling Cabo sunsets. By the end of her vacation, Joe realizes he wants more. The only problem is he has fallen for a woman who wants less. If Joe can't earn her trust and prove his love, he will lose her forever.

5. The Unexpected Honeymoon by Barbara Wallace

A holiday to remember…

Widower Carlos Chavez manages La Joya del Mayan, the most romantic resort in Mexico. On good days, the romance passes unnoticed; on dark days, it only reminds him of his loss.

But the honeymoon suite's latest guest, Larissa Boyd, has rocked his steadfastness. Stunningly beautiful, she seems lost. And no wonder…she's on a honeymoon for one!

The chemistry is instant—and their similarities run deep. Could it be that the two loneliest hearts on the island have found love…in the most unexpected of places?

6. The Fifth Kingdom by Caridad Pineiro

Dr. Deanna Vasquez hasn't spoken to her mother in years, not since the renowned archaeologist abandoned her family in her quest to find the lost tomb of Montezuma. When CIA agent Bill Santana shows up in her classroom with the news that her mother has been abducted by terrorists, Deanna has to help in any way she can.

Bill needs Deanna's expertise to determine the location of her mother's latest find, before her kidnappers do. He fears whatever mysteries the tomb holds could be deadly in the wrong hands. In an effort to make contact with the terrorist cell, Bill accompanies Deanna to Mexico posing as her fiancé—a ruse made doubly dangerous because of the very real heat between them...

7. The Goldsmith's Daughter by Tanya Landman

In the golden city of Tenochtitlan, Emperor Montezuma rules with an iron rod and people live in fear of the gods. Itacate, a girl born under an ill-fated sky, is destined for a life of submission and domestic drudgery. But when her father, a goldsmith, discovers her talent for his craft, she starts to work as his apprentice, a secret she must keep in order to protect the lives of herself and her family. But danger awaits as Spanish strangers invade the city. And when Itacate's work comes to the emperor's attention and she falls in love with a stranger, her life takes an even more perilous turn. Can Itacate change her destiny and survive in this harsh new world?

8. Hell On Wheels by Karen Kelley

Cody Carlisle has a reputation for being a bad ass bounty hunter. She was raised by an alcoholic mother and she has no idea who her father is, so yeah, she had to grow up fast. Her survival depended on it. She doesn’t need anyone, especially a player like Josh Pierce.

9. All Bottled Up by Christine d'Abo

lesson in seduction that releases lightning in a bottle…

Instead she winds up alone, empty handed and with a sore toe from the beautiful bottle she’s tripped over.

A bottle that’s purple, gold—and stuffed with over six feet of blue-eyed, black-haired hunk. If anyone could teach her how to seduce her boss, it’s this sexy genie.

Jerod can’t believe his bad luck. Three thousand years of granting frivolous wishes, and now he’s stuck playing matchmaker. A series of sensual lessons later, he finds there’s something different about this shy Viola. Something that tempts him to try to break free of his curse and make a life for himself—with her.

Crown: Princes in Paranormal Romance Novels (Click to Vote on the Goodreads list!)

My lists are never in any particular order.

1. Practical Uses for Princes with Pointed Ears by Isabelle Saint-Michael

Lillian Chambers was just an ordinary high school teacher, until she fell through a Fairy Circle. When she came to on the other side, she was surprised to find herself in the company of an Elven prince she thought only existed in her dreams. Now she’s slaying monsters and rescuing Prince Tallyn, instead of playing the part of the damsel in distress.

Tallyn had been the protector of his kingdom for over one hundred years. He knows that the world is filled with danger around every corner, but these days he’s finding himself babysitting the annoyingly fearless Lady Lillian.

2. The Outcast Prince by Shona Husk

Caspian Mort can feel the history in anything he touches, a gift he inherited from his father, the Crown Prince of Annwyn. Devastated over his ex-wife's infidelity, Caspian has withdrawn from human contact except when working as an antiques dealer.

While assessing the contents of the historic Callaway House he encounters the beautiful Lydia Callaway and senses that her home is haunted by a banished fairy. But what does the dangerous exile want? Unbeknownst to Lydia, she's the owner of the last remaining portal to Annwyn—a mirror hidden somewhere in the house. To keep Lydia safe, Caspian will have to divulge the secrets of his heritage, and risk losing his heart again.

3. The Jaguar Prince by Karen Kelley

Zoo worker Callie Jordan knows something primal when she sees it: take, for instance, the naked man sitting at the foot of her bed. He's the same (naked) guy she saw after hours at the zoo. But now he's in her apartment, and just happens to have turned into a black-as-night jaguar. The average person would be in a blind panic;Callie certainly intends to be--once she finishes processing what this incredibly hot lunatic is telling her. . .

It seems Callie's visitor, the one who prefers skins to shirts, is Prince Rogar--from a place far, far away. Oh, and Callie is from the same place, has the same nifty shapeshifting powers, and is destined to be Rogar's lifemate! It figures the first hot guy ever to show a bit of interest turns out to be certifiable. Then again, Callie's seen Rogar's powers (plus some other choice things) firsthand--and testing her new roomie's powers of persuasion would be the ultimate walk on the wild side. . .

4. Pleasure of a Dark Prince by Kresley Cole

A Dangerous Beauty... Lucia the Huntress: as mysterious as she is exquisite, she harbors secrets that threaten to destroy her - and those she loves.

An Uncontrollable Need... Garreth MacRieve, Prince of the Lykae: the brutal Highland warrior who burns to finally claim this maddeningly sensual creature as his own.

That Lead to a Pleasure so Wicked... From the shadows, Garreth has long watched over Lucia. Now, the only way to keep the proud huntress safe from harm is to convince her to accept him as her guardian. To do this, Garreth will ruthlessly exploit Lucia's greatest weakness - her wanton desire for him.

5. The Star Prince by Susan Grant

Earth guy Ian Hamilton studying for a finance degree when his mother marries the king of the galaxy. But when his stepfather unexpectedly chooses him as his successor, the new crown prince, Ian is thrust into a world he never envisioned, complicated by a court-load of scheming royals who don't think he belongs there, either. And if that’s not enough, an independent-minded princess-in-peril lands in his arms, on the run from the very laws he’s pledged to uphold. Outmanned and outgunned, he’s a fish out of water. Only allowing himself to be overwhelmed is not an option. It seems that the entire kingdom is hurtling toward war, and he’s the only one who can stop it.

6. Barbarian Prince by Michelle M. Pillow

Going undercover at a mass wedding as a bartered bride, Morrigan Blake has every intention of getting off the barbaric planet just as soon as it's over. Or, more correctly, just as soon as she captures footage of the mysterious princes rumored to be in attendance. After a euphoric night, Morrigan discovers her spaceship left without her, and Ualan of Draig is claiming she's his wife. It's not exactly the story this reporter had in mind. And to make matters worse, the all-too-seductive alpha refuses to take no for an answer.

Being cursed by the gods was never so frustrating...

Prince Ualan is prepared to follow dragonshifter tradition and marry the woman revealed to him during the Breeding Festival. When the stubborn, yet achingly sexy, Morrigan refuses to accept their shared fate and his supreme authority over her, it is all he can do to keep from acting like the barbarian she accuses him of being.

About the series: The dragon shifting Princes have no problem with commitment. In one night, they will meet and choose their life mate in a simplistic ceremony involving the removing of masks and the crushing of crystals. With very few words spoken and the shortest, most bizarre courtship in history, they will bond to their women forever. And once bonded, these men don't let go. Too bad nobody explained this to their brides.

7. Dark Prince by Christine Feehan

Carpathians are an immortal race of beings with animal instincts. Every Carpathian male is drawn to his life mate: a Carpathian or human female able to provide the light to his darkness. Without her, the beast within slowly consumes the man until turning vampire is the only option.' Raven Whitney is a psychic who has used her gift to help the police track down a serial killer. Now she is determined to escape the glare of recent publicity for the peace and quiet of the Carpathian Mountains. Prince Mikhail Dubrinsky is the leader of his people but, as his ancient Carpathian race grows ever closer to extinction, he is close to giving in to the heavy weight of loneliness and despair. From the moment their minds touch, Raven and Mikhail form a connection. But there are those who incorrectly view all Carpathians as vampires, and are determined to give their extinction a helping hand.

8. Tempted by a Rogue Prince by Felicity Heaton

When demons of the Fifth Realm capture him, he sees a chance to end his existence, but when he wakes in a cell to a beautiful female, he finds not death but his only shot at salvation—his true fated mate.

Can Rosalind escape her fate as they embark on a journey fraught with danger and resist the temptation of her rogue elf prince? And can Vail overcome the memories that madden him in order to seize his chance for salvation and the heart of his fated female forever?

9. Rebel Prince by Justine Davis

Prince Lyon would rather strip naked in the square than allow Shaina Silverbrake bragging rights for rescuing him from anything, much less would be prince-nappers on Arellia. But what he wants and what destiny has planned for him are about to collide when a dark plot is uncovered by Rina. Lyon’s last adventure before royal duty claims him for life becomes a race for a powerful artifact, and the fate of two worlds hangs in the balance.

Close Encounters of the Sexy Kind
Close Encounters of the Sexy Kind - Karen Kelley

So I was surprised at how much I liked this. It was hilarious! I laughed my ass off so many times. The humor is anywhere from cringe-worthy to just plain stupid (but so stupid it's funny). There was Mala telling everyone (literally everyone) she's having sex with Mason to the "documentary" (porn film) her grandmother had on Nerak. I enjoyed the side story with Barton getting some romance too. The baddies get a nice comeuppance too. I would have liked to have known more about Nerak (other than life is perfect there).
