Envy of Angels by Matt Wallace
Envy of Angels - Matt Wallace
This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life in Books.

This was just okay for me. I have heard great things about this series so this book has been on my to be read list for some time. I bought a copy of the book but had not had the opportunity to sit down and read it just yet so when I saw that the audiobook was available through my library, I decided to go that route. It is a rather short piece so I was able to finish it in just a couple of days. I didn't fall in love with this book but did enjoy some aspects of the story.

This book was weird. I like weird books so that shouldn't have been any kind of problem but this book is really weird. Not normal weird but undead clowns worshipping a giant chicken kind of weird. This book had a certain crazy that went along with the weird and I think it was just a bit much for me at times. It was definitely unique and unlike anything else that I have ever read.

Darren and Lena get the chance to work for a catering company called Sin du Jour. Sin du Jour is not your normal group of caterers. They have a very original menu and clientele that sometimes come to them with special requests. Serving the wrong kind of meal could have devastating consequences for the employees of Sin du Jour. I thought that the way that the staff of Sin du Jour interacted with each other felt rather authentic.

The narrator was just okay for me as well. I believe that this is the first time that I have had the chance to listen to Corey Gagne's narration. I have to admit that I didn't care for some of the voices that he used especially for the female characters. It was difficult to determine who was talking at times. I thought that he did have a pleasant voice that brought excitement to some of the scenes but I was never quite able to completely move past my dislike for some of the voices used. I would probably be willing to give this narrator another try in the future with a different kind of story.

I think that some readers may enjoy this story a bit more than I did. It was a really interesting concept with some really exciting scenes. The book did cause me to swear off all chicken nuggets at least for a little while. I am probably not going to continue with this series but I am glad that I decided to give this story a listen.

Initial Thoughts
This was weird. Not normal weird but undead clowns worshiping a giant chicken kind of weird. It was definitely unlike anything else that I have read before. The narrator was okay. I didn't care for some of the voices that he used especially for the female characters.

Extremely addictive uf series
Vampire's Kiss (Legion of Angels) (Volume 1) - Ella Summers

Bear with me as I sort through why Vampire’s Kiss had all the elements I love like snark, sexual tension, interesting mythology and totally worked for me, while other books with the same tropes that I’ve read recently have not. Hmm. Ever read a book where it feels like they are trying too hard, either with the humour or the suspense or the sexiness? I think that’s it. The other urban fantasy books I’d started recently were trying too hard. Like the authors knew there was a formula that readers enjoyed and were attempting to shove those elements into it.

This story felt effortless in all the best ways. Let’s start with our MC, Leda. Yes, she’s badass and snarky and has difficulties with rules when someone she cares about is in danger, but these character qualities never feel over-the-top, and in fact, give her considerable difficulty at times. I simply loved everything about her voice.

Then there is Nero, our main love interest. He’s an angel, but Summers steers away from a lot of the clichés. In this world, angels can be made, which brings up an interesting discussion about the nature of humanity, that gets deeper, the deeper you get into the series.

Every book deals with Leda levelling up as she moves through the Legion, with missions and sexytimes. How do I know this? Well, I’ve binged the first 4 books in 3 days. It’s actually a good thing that the final book was released because I’m going to need it very soon.

If you’re jonsing for good uf, check this series out.

This is Book 2 in the Devil’s Reach trilogy, and it ends with a cliffhanger. Intended for readers 18 or older. May contain…triggers.

Great start to a new amazing series!

Some of our new cast:

Cooper,Rail,Brick,Gus,Tess aka Tiger,Peggy,Minnie,Ty,Jace,Morgan,
Cray,Loose,Ray,Clark,Mike,Allen,Zay,
Savi,Langley,Mud,Fin,Ven,TiagoTrigger,
Big Joe

Let's start off by saying this is a new author for me and I loved this story from cover to cover but, "I absolutely HATE reading books with cliffhangers !"

I loved this new MC romance from cover to cover as the story had wonderful characters all very complicated in their own right.Once I started reading the story I was fully enmeshed in it from the very beginning to the very end and never put it down.

I always pick a favorite character in the story to rave about and my choice this time around is going to be Tess.OMG! I loved her what a feisty fireball she was with a huge sense of humor, she was full of spunk, she was sexy, mouthy, had a backbone made of steel, and pure enjoyment to read about.Although Tess is all those things she is haunted by her past as well as being heartbroken and dead inside (a heart of Ice) her beliefs not mine I only saw a survivor and a strong and amazing women to be admired.I loved learning about what brought Tess to the Devil Reach MC Clubhouse.Tess's story was heart wrenching and made me want to cry when I heard it .My heart broke for her and everything she had to go through and deal in her very short life so far.I don't know how she survived it all really.Perhaps Brick helped with that he was Tess's bleak life and I am so glad that she found some kind of solace with her among her chaotic loveless life.A 18 year friendship that lasted the test of time and circumstances.I love their friendship as they were like brother and sister but, so much more.

Trigger OMG! I man with layers! I have to say this man frightened even me,I found him to be tall, dark, handsome, dangerous, protective, overbearing, also a killer, and also love-able at the same time."Does that make sense?"You have to get to know the broken man first but, once you see how he is with his nephew Fin and Tess you will see for yourself. There is a loving and caring man below the surface even though he thinks he is dead inside but, we see rare glimpses of the heart beating within his chest.Trigger is a character you love to hate but, he makes it impossible not to love this broken man.Circumstances made the Trigger the man we have grown to love but, at the same time I wished he would find just a sliver of happiness for just once in is horrible life."When I say horrible it's beyond anything you can imagine."I believe Tess to be his savior and he hers. Two broken souls find solace in one another. As the pages turned and the story unfolded it seemed that Tess and Trigger became lighter and less tense and perhaps were finally grasping a bit of happiness that each haven't felt in a very long time."I loved seeing how they were with one another."Awe.......I thought these two people were meant for one another perhaps, not to heal bought to offer a peace of solace for one another.

Trigger and Tess's chemistry was of the charts.Holy fanning! Hot Hot hotter ! Their sexual encounters were hot as hell!
"I want some of that bad boy myself."
Holy smokes! Flip your switch for me Trigger! LOL

Overall we loved everything about the story.

We loved the characters, the drama, the mystery, suspense, danger, betrayals and of course the romance.I loved hearing Tess's and Triggers tragic stories of their upbringing lost loves my heart broken for the unfairness life dealt them both.
"It broke my heart time and time again."I loved the climatic ending even though "I hate cliffhangers!"I could not wait to dive into book two and did just that and read that story from beginning to end in one sitting yet again.Love Love Loved it!

Personal note: Ms Drake has gained a new fan of her works.

For Demons Book #2

“If what becomes too much? Minnie…” I tried to grab her hand, but she veered off toward Brick. “I thought it was just an edible, as in pot.”

“Hello again, leather pants.” Rail appeared at my side. “I was wondering when we were going to meet you again.”

Trigger rolled up on his bike. He was in a black t-shirt that hugged his biceps and chest, and dark jeans and boots. His cut seemed a bit tight, a sign he had been working out a lot.

He didn’t remove his sunglasses, but his stare nearly made me trip as I walked over and took the helmet he handed me.

“You look good,” he muttered. “You’ve been missing for the past week.”

“Just dealing with some stuff.”

“I don’t like it.”

“I know.” I flipped my hair back and pulled the helmet on. “Me either.” I swung my leg over the bike and rested my hands on his hips, and he pulled me so I hugged him. He flicked the engine over and backed us out.

An hour later, we hit a wall of traffic and came to a complete stop. That was when I began to notice the leather cut that wrapped Trigger’s midsection was as smooth as lamb skin. As I moved my sensitive fingertips over it, I felt a ball of warmth grow in my belly.

My thighs flexed as Trigger shifted his weight. I didn’t mean to ball his shirt in my hands, but fuck me, everything felt amazing.

“You okay?” His raspy voice caught me off guard, and I jolted on the seat, and oh-my-God, it was amazing. “Tess?”

“Please stop moving,” was all that shot out of my mouth. He flipped up his visor and turned to look at me. I shook my head and moaned as his ass rubbed my front. My jaw clenched, and I started to grind my teeth.

“Put your visor up.”

Oh, shit, don’t get alpha on me. I may lose it right here on the freeway.

I quickly shoved it up and stared into his confused eyes.

“What are you on?”

“Nothing.” I almost moaned when he moved again.

He stared a beat longer before he snapped his visor down and turned back around.

Ohhh, yes. I wanted to tap his shoulder to get him to do that again, but the traffic started to move.

Sweet, horny Lucifer. I’d broken out in a light layer of sweat, and my thighs burned from the grip on the seat. Three hours on the bike, and its vibrations had built me up to a pleasure-painful level. I’d finish myself off if I weren’t surrounded by the crew.

Thankfully, Trigger signaled we were stopping for a break at the next rest stop. We took the exit and rolled up at the light before the small park.

When Trigger kicked his foot out to stabilize us, I grabbed the side of his leg and begged my body to let go.

His hand landed on mine, and I wanted to cry. His touch, his smell, his everything made my world tilt on its axis. I didn’t know how much longer I could hold on.

I was either going to kill someone or have the most mind-blowing orgasm known to woman in public.

The bike slowed to a stop, and he proceeded to wiggle around then slid the length of his leg across me. I tossed my helmet, and my palms dug deep into the hot leather. I felt like I was balancing on the loose rocks that lined edge of my orgasm. I had never not-wanted to come so badly in my life.

My mind shifted to images of Trigger touching me.

Oh, no.

Oh, yes.

Oh, please.

“That’s one major fuck-me face.” Rail burst my steamy moment.

I glared at him, but it did nothing for my problem. “What?”

“Just makin’ an observation.”

“Observate somewhere else.”

“Yeah, you probably need to finish that off.” He wiggled his fingers and winked.

I closed my eyes and managed to channel my thoughts back to being underneath Trigger. His hands on my skin, his lips on my neck, his…

A shadow crossed my face and blocked my warmth. “What did you take?”

A deep jolt tore through me as my mind decided if it he was real or not.

“Please,” I nearly panted. “Don’t talk.” I rubbed my hands down my pants. The leather was warm and sent goosebumps through me.

“What?”

“I’m not entirely sure, as this is the first time I ever took ecstasy, but I think I took ecstasy.”

A refined Scottish courtier. A rugged British spy. And an affair that will change the course of history. Everything changes when the shocking deception is revealed in this seductive novel from USA Today bestselling author Sharon Cullen.

Ladies in waiting can’t help noticing more than they let on. After so many years at the court of Mary, Queen of Scots, Emma Howard sees quite plainly that the royal couple is anything but happy. Reeling from a failed marriage herself, Emma sympathizes with her beloved queen. But the last thing she wants is for the king to be murdered, let alone to witness the shocking act herself. With her whole world turned upside-down, Emma is saved by the quick thinking of a lowly printer . . . who, unbeknownst to her, is one of England’s most daring spies.

At Queen Elizabeth’s behest, Tristan has been stirring discontent against the Scottish nobility. Now that the king is dead, his mission is even more critical. There’s only one complication: the exquisite courtier who’s unexpectedly fallen under Tristan’s protection. Emma rouses his body and his soul. But after she learns that he’s a traitor, the fate of two nations hangs on her response. Tristan’s prepared to risk his life in exchange for hers. Will Emma do the same for the man she’s come to love?

Don’t miss these novels in the All the Queen’s Spies series:
WED TO A SPY  | BOUND TO A SPY

And look for all of Sharon Cullen’s delightful historical romances:

This ebook includes an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

Let's start off my saying
that its been sometime since  I have read anything by this author so I was so glad to come across this title and reacquaint myself with her stories.I love reading historical romances but, as of late I have been trying out other gene's and authors but historical romances with always be a favorite of mine.

I have to say that I really enjoyed the story as it was a really a sweet romance that developed between Tristan and Emma and I am glad their unlikely paths crossed  for a reason. This couple were super sweet and cute together and I love how their new love developed slowly but, as it turned out really ended up being a healing bond for both of them.

I love Emma as she was sweet, kind, charming, caring clever, smart and for a noble not at all haughty or vain but down to earth. For all that Emma has gone through in her short life she has for the most part remained and innocent although not oblivious to the danger that surrounded her.
"I loved this about her. "

Tristan was a sweetheart and kind, compassionate, a bit lonely and one who had a few of his own past regrets that weighed him down.Tristan's compassionate nature helped heal Emma mentally and physically and it gave her a new lease on life and in turned healed his own battered heart just by loving him.

The story flowed nicely and it was nice to see a couple fall for one another in the mist of the chaos surrounding them as both of them had  loyalties to two different queens yet were perfect for one another.I loved the lengths Emma was willing to go to save the one she loved with no thought of the ramifications to her own safety and future.

I love when you can connect with the characters that you read about and I did just that.I loved Tristan and Emma from the onset of the story as you could not help it as they both were both loving and kind.

Overall I enjoyed the story and plot and the character's themselves. My only complaint is I personally don't like a story that doesn't tie up loose ends.I didn't like just how the story ended.Where was the Epilogue? For me there were so many unanswered questions left  like ...

Was Queen Mary involved in the plot to kill her husband?

Was Lord Bothwell part of a plot to murder Darnley or did he do the deed himself ?

And so forth.....

We can come to our own conclusions of what happened  but, the stories plot left more questions than answers and I do not like that.

This ended up to be the third book in this series and I will most definitely reading book one and two to get caught up.

A nice historical romance to pass the time.

Bestselling author J. L. Drake was born and raised in Nova Scotia, Canada, later moving to Southern California where she lives with her husband and two children.

When she’s not writing, she loves to spend time with her family, travelling or just enjoying a night at home. One thing you might notice in her books is her love for the four seasons. Growing up on the east coast of Canada the change in the seasons is in her blood and is often mentioned in her writing.

An avid reader of James Patterson, J.L. Drake has often found herself inspired by his many stories of mystery and intrigue.

She hopes you will enjoy her stories as much as she has enjoyed writing them.
