Selkie Moon – The First Lie by Virginia King @selkiemoonbooks
The First Lie (Selkie Moon Mystery Series Book 1) - Virginia King

I was introduced to Virginia King and Selkie Moon through a free Amazon copy of Laying Ghosts. I probably found it through a newsletter. Laying Ghosts is still free at the time I created this post, so I hope you take a moment to introduce yourself. Be sure and check to make sure it is still free.

The First Lie (Selkie Moon Mystery #1)

Amazon / Audiobook / Goodreads

MY REVIEW

I reviewed the Prequel Laying Ghosts, in the Selkie Moon Series by Virginia King, and when the author say it, she offered me a review copy of The First Lie. I love the cover, the location, Hawaii, and any kind of water…person, so there was no doubt in mind I had to continue on with the series. I was not disappointed.

Living in a difficult situation in Sydney she heard the call of Hawaii.

Selkie heard a voice, “Someone is trying to kill you.”

And so we begin. Is it real or a figment of her imagination? Is it Pele, warning her? Is she psychic? She’s seen the woman twice. Who is she? What does she want?

With the name Selkie Moon, I felt things would happen differently and The First Lie did not play out like I thought. It seemed a slow pace, but I think that is on me, not Virginia King…or Selkie herself. It takes time for her to work through her issues, her psychological introspection, growing and developing as a character to come into her own, becoming more mature, poised, and confident.

We have Hawaiian mysticism, and I love Hawaii, so this was that little bit extra that I look for in a good book. And, a friend, Wanda, who believes in all of it. Who doesn’t like to learn about the country they are visiting? I sure do. Years ago, Hawaii was #2 on my bucket list. I was so fortunate I was able to cross that off, though I would love to visit it again.

Selkie Moon almost drowned as a child and has a fear of water. The ocean calls to her, but she turns her back on it. Makes me wonder what is to come, if she won’t even get near it, let alone step into it.

Looking back, I appreciate the slow build and details of her life even more, walking in her footsteps and looking through her eyes. My anticipation for the next book, The Second Path, grew after reading the first chapter. I wasn’t going to read it, but seeing the next book is already out, I know there is no wait. And I do want to know what comes next…very much.

At first it felt hard to rate this, bouncing between a 3 and a 4, while reading. After writing this review and seeing the notes I made, I had to go with a 4.

I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of The First Lie by Virginia King.

I love Sonja and Will’s chemistry. They bicker a bit but you can tell it’s in love. They make a great addition to Mystic Bayou and I’m looking forward to seeing more of them. Oh and Will fits right in with Will and Bael and I love that even more.

Selkies Are a Girl's Best Friend by Molly Harper
Selkies are a Girl's Best Friend (Mystic Bayou #3) - Molly Harper, Amanda Ronconi,Jonathan Davis

This review can also be found at Carole's Random Life in Books.

This was a great little audiobook! This is the third book in the Mystic Bayou series but I was pretty confident that it would work well as a stand-alone. It did work very well on its own but now I kind of want to go back and read the earlier books. Funny how that works. I thought that this book was fun from beginning to end and I had a great time meeting some of the residents of this strange town.

Sonja can handle just about anything. She works for the League and seems to be able to get things done. She is given the task of being the liaison for the town's new doctor. Will has taken the position as the new doctor but he wasn't expecting to see the ailments that seem to be popping up around town. He hasn't lived in Mystic Bayou for a very long time and it is obvious that some things have changed.

Sonja and Will were great together. I thought that they had really great chemistry and seemed to mesh really well. It was fun to watch them work with each other and I really enjoyed it when they opened up to each other. Will had quite a few hang-ups in regards to starting a relationship which made sense considering his history.

I loved the way that this story was written. It had all of the humor that I have come to expect from Molly Harper which kept things really light. The story also had a lot of heart with the characters dealing with some real issues and moving forward in their lives. I thought that the characters in Mystic Bayou were very well done. I especially enjoyed getting to meet Will's brother.

Amanda Ronconi and Jonathan Davis did a fabulous job with the narration. I really thought that their voices worked well together in this story and it is always nice to have two narrators for a story that is told from two different points of view. I thought that they both did a great job with the characters voices and were able to add some emotion into the story. I wouldn't hesitate to listen to more from this pair of narrators.

I would recommend this book to others. I thought that this story was funny, original, romantic, and exciting. I couldn't stop listening because I just had to know what else could happen in the strange town of Mystic Bayou. I can't wait to read more from this delightful series.

I received a copy of this audiobook from Audible Originals.

Initial Thoughts
This was fun! I have not read any of the previous books in this series and I can confirm that this book works very well on its own. I thought that the relationship between Will and Sonja was well done and I really enjoyed the friendship between Jillian and Sonja. This was rather comical with a lot of fun references worked into the story. I thought that the narration was great and added a lot to the story.

Audio Review: Selkies are a Girl's Best Friend (Mystic Bayou, #3) by Molly Harper (Author), Amanda Ronconi (Narrator), Jonathan Davis (Narrator)
Selkies are a Girl's Best Friend (Mystic Bayou #3) - Molly Harper, Amanda Ronconi,Jonathan Davis

I'm not usually drawn to paranormal stories, but Selkies Are A Girl's Best Friend could have me changing my point of view. Harper creates a world where being unique is not the exception, but the rule. Mystic Bayou is a place of acceptance that could teach us a lot in the real world. Sonja and the mysterious Will are our tour guides into a world full of chaos and humor. In an ever changing climate, it's the ability to unite in the scary moments that makes Mystic Bayou an eclectically, beautiful canvas. What I love most about Molly Harper is that she dares to be different. With the help of a dangerously smart and wickedly funny group of characters, as well as topnotch vocal talent, Selkies touched the dreamer in me that I often forget still exists.

Hello Readers! I am returning to Kismet Cove again to find out if Rory's cousin and his blood brother find themselves a true mate! Enjoy and don't forget to add Windswept to your shelves!

When Vivian Waverly arrives in the small coastal town of Tofino for her best friend’s wedding, romance is the last thing on her mind – until she meets two men who might just be able to tame her restless heart.

Tucker Pine and Byron Triggs are selkies, shapeshifters living in secret. Bound by blood and magic, they’re destined to share a mate – and they want it to be Vivian.

Finding each other took an act of fate, but to stay together this trio will have to break the rules, defy tradition, and forge a new path for themselves and the colony of Kismet Cove.

**Publisher’s Note – This book was previously released with the same title. It has been lightly revised and updated.

Her best friend is getting married and the last thing on Vivian Waverly’s mind is romance – until she meets two men who just might be able to tame her restless heart. Selkie shapeshifters, Tucker Pine and Bryon Triggs are bound by blood and magic and destined to share a mate – and they want it to be Vivian. Fate may have helped them find each other, but the trio will have to break the rules, defy tradition and forge a new path for themselves and the Kismet Cove colony is they want to stay together.

Another wonderfully engaging and super steamy book in the ‘Kismet Cove’ series with strong, bold characters that take reader’s by storm. Tucker, and Bryon have some seriously electrical chemistry with Vivian but she’s isn’t looking for romance and has no plans to stay in Kismet Cove, so they will work hard and use their scorching hot wooing passions to convince her that they are meant to be together. But their relations also has a colony full of secrets and a deranged selkie standing in the way of their happiness.

Readers are captured hook, line and sinker by this fast paced story full of steam and thrilling suspense as they wonder how this threesome will work things out especially once the secrets out of the bag and a deranged selkie decides that a human isn’t good enough. Once again, readers are enthralled with wonderfully magical world and its stimulating traditions.

Susan lives out on the Canadian west coast surrounded by open water, dear family and good friends. She’s jumped out of perfectly good airplanes on purpose and accidentally swum with sharks on the Great Barrier Reef. If the world ends, she plans to survive as the spunky, comedic sidekick to the heroes of the new world, because she’s too damned short and out of shape to make it on her own for long.

Writing is her joy, her escape from reality and the only way she knows of to quiet the nagging harridan of a muse the universe assigned to her.
