Excerpt:

"Shayla?"

For the longest moment Zack's brain couldn't process the sight in front of him. Seven years, ten months and twenty-seven days. That was how long it had been since he'd seen her. That was how long it had been since he'd lived a life without regret.

Fight promoter Zack Grayson is on the prowl for a rising star. As the top recruiter of a prestigious MMA promotion company, he wants to take someone where he was never able to go: the top of the professional league. He didn't expect that someone to be the woman he loved...and left.

Top-ranked MMA amateur fighter Shayla "Shilla the Killa" Tyler built walls around her heart when Zack left her seven years ago—and again when her husband turned violent. Now, seeing Zack is nearly enough to send those walls crumbling. But she can't risk the exposure of the limelight, and she definitely can't risk another heartbreak.

As Shayla and Zack grow closer, though, business turns personal. And once their passion unleashes, there's no going back...

Trouble in Cochise Stronghold
Trouble in Cochise Stronghold (Will Travel for Trouble Series Book 8) - Minnie Crockwell

I signed up for a free trial of Kindle Unlimited and found this, the latest book in a novella series I enjoy.  Woo hoo!

After taking early retirement, Minnie is traveling around the US in her RV accompanied by her ghost companion Ben, who was a member of the Lewis & Clark party who died while exploring Washington state.  Minnie and Ben have a slightly creepy flirtation going.

In this, the 8th installment, Minnie is in Arizona and sets out to explore the Cochise Stronghold, a mountain encampment that Cochise and his men fought off the army for several years.  While on a hike, she discovers a dead body in a spring (well, more like a well run from a spring) and sets out to investigate.

Just as with all all the other books in the series, this book is just shy of 100 pages and I'm always amazed at how well she can weave such great plots around so many characters and yet I've never felt that anything was left out or that it was confusing to keep track of so many characters.  Truly, the author is a master at writing a short story and leaving you feeling like you just read a full length novel.

I really recommend this whole series as a quick, light read that offers a little bit of American history, a little bit of mystery and, ok, a weensy bit of creepy.  But always a great read.

Republicans Take Note!
The Stronghold: How Republicans Captured Congress but Surrendered the White House - Thomas F. Schaller

The Stronghold: How Republicans Captured Congress but Surrendered the White House

Schaller has an interesting hypothesis about the state of the Republican party today. That is the Republicans have found that, rather than becoming a more inclusive party and reaching out to minorities and liberals, they have decided that it is more in their interest to concentrate on getting out the vote of their more conservative members and suppressing the votes of other parties. This by stricter voter registration laws, gerrymandering of political districts, and fear tactics. While these methods work for the distended, artificial districts they have created, ensuring the reelection of congressional members, they do not seem to transfer to their presidential candidates. A great deal of discussion ensues to make his case, which he does admirably. The Tea Party and the effects they are having on the Republican party, as well as the system as a whole, is covered well. I, for one, have to admit being becoming a believer in his theory. The book flows well, and is very well written. The Republicans would be well advised to read this book, and adjust their policies if they ever want to win the White House.

Taming the Tease (Stronghold Book 2)
Taming the Tease (Stronghold Book 2) - Golden Angel Her books keep getting better.

I loved both Rick and Maria. I especially enjoyed how comfortable Maria was with her body and how she didn't let whatever asshole make her feel bad about herself :)

Stronghold (Stronghold 1)
Stronghold (Stronghold 1) - Golden Angel 3.5*
-0.5* for the editing, it drives me a bit crazy
-1* they never talked about condoms or contraception methods or, you know, if they got tested for STDs! I don't have this problem in UFs and PNRs since there the characters are either dead, need fateful females or their cycles happen who knows in how much time and their immune systems destroy everything; in HR it depends and I mostly turn a blind eye, even though I want to throw a party every time they talk about it... But in contemps it's unacceptable!
