Freebie Book Blitz! The Last Resistance: Dragon Tomb by Ricardo Alexanders!

ABOUT THE BOOK:

Set in World War II China, fantasy author Ricardo Alexanders takes you on an action-packed thrill ride full of twists and turns in DRAGON TOMB.

While defending his country against Japanese invasion, archaeologist Chuan-Jay Hoo is taken as a prisoner of war when a behind-enemy-lines rescue mission goes horribly wrong. His captors force him to take part in the excavation of an ancient tomb, a process that unearths the true origin of Chinese civilization.

The excavation ends; but China is still in dire need of help. Teamed up with American adventurer Dr. Harry Jones, a close friend of President Roosevelt, Chuan-Jay returns to the tomb and convinces the guardians of the tomb to interfere human affairs.

The tide of the war is turned but no one sees what is coming next: the rise of an otherworldly evil. Neither the Allies nor the Axis powers can stand in its way. Soon, our world is at the brink of Armageddon. At the final moment of human civilization, Chuan-Jay finds himself standing alone in the tomb of the First King, as the last line of defense for the survival of mankind.

Intro

The year is 1939. An expedition to the most mysterious tomb in China awakes a nameless force and changes the fate of mankind forever… In the prison camp, protagonist Chuan-Jay (CJ) Hoo stumbles into Akagi Hikoichi, his old roommate at Boston University and the commander of the Japanese expedition force. One night, Akagi confesses that he is looking for the Ninth Cauldron, a mythical device said to be buried with the First King. He tells CJ that Japan can win the war with the power of the Ninth Cauldron and he has convinced Emperor Hirohito about that. CJ does not believe a word out of Akagi’s mouth.

Dragon Stone

“This is crazy talk, Akagi! Xia may have existed and the tomb could be under one of these hills. But the dragon and all that supernatural crap… I don’t know how you even convinced yourself. Akagi, you are an archaeologist!”
“You will believe me once you see this.” Akagi reached into a hidden pocket in his winter jacket and took out an eyeglass case. He opened the case. There was the necklace CJ had seen many times from a distance.
Akagi picked up the chain and let the small, slightly blackish pendant dangle in the air.
“Diamond?”
“Yes. Take a look.” Akagi nodded.
CJ took the necklace from him. It appeared to be an emerald-shaped solitaire diamond with a slightly dark-reddish hint. It looked like about one carat, not too big, not too small, with one end sitting on a four-pronged white-gold setting. Dangling in front of Akagi’s gas lamp, the stone’s surface appeared to be smooth and shiny.
“A small stone with visible inclusions. What about it?”
“Take a close look.” Akagi handed him the magnifying lens.
Something is inside.
CJ realized this immediately, as there were some strange reflections of light from within the diamond.
“The polarizer,” Akagi reminded him.
As he held the lens, CJ’s jaw hit the ground. The inside of the diamond was like nothing CJ had seen before. Beneath the hard surface was a core with the shape of two identical tetrahedrons superimposed over each other in opposite directions. The core looked purple and appeared to be spinning clockwise, like it was floating on water in the middle of the hardest thing in the world.
Even more bizarre, the core appeared to have a mind of its own. Most of the time, it spun at a very low speed. Sometimes it would speed up a little, then slow itself down. Its rotation totally disregarded the motion of the diamond.
“What…How…” CJ, dumbstruck, finally managed to utter a few incoherent words.
“It is called the heart of the stone. The corner pointing up channels energy down from the sky to the Earth; and the one pointing downwards draws energy up from the Earth. Together, they create a perfect balance.”
“What is this stone?”
“It was said to be the amulet of the First King. According to my secret scrolls, he lost it in one of his last battles. When it resurfaced about twenty-seven hundred years ago, it was named the Dragon Stone. Others call it the Blood Dragon Stone.”
“The secret scrolls? Can I read them?”
“No, you can’t. They are locked safely in my museum in Tokyo. About another thousand years later, the Dragon Stone showed up again briefly before it disappeared from this world.”
“It is indeed out of this world.” CJ agreed on this part. “How did you find it?”
“I bought it. The guy I bought it from said it was kept in his family from the time of Xia.”
“He lied, just trying to score a sale.” CJ knew the antique business too well and had not heard of anyone in China with a family tree that could trace back to the time of the Xia Dynasty.
“He probably did. But when I took it back to Tokyo and studied it, it really fit the pieces of information of the Dragon Stone that I pieced together from those scrolls.”
“According to the -quote- Secret Scroll -unquote- again.”
“It was also said that part of the king’s soul had grown into this stone and it will wake up once it gets close to the king’s dead body.”
“So that is why you were…”
“Yes. Every time I put it close to my heart, I can feel something special, maybe the soul of the First King.”
“Really? Can I try it?”
“No. Not unless you agree to join me.”
“No. Like I said before, I am not going to help you steal our national treasures.”
“Not so quickly, CJ. Think it through.”
“What’s to think through?”
“Well, let me give you a little hint. You probably already know that this is a top-secret mission. The whole expedition force was shipped directly from Japan and operated under a fake unit name. Only our highest commander in China, General Yasuji Okamura, was briefed. So…” Akagi stopped for a second. “At the end of the mission... I am pretty sure you know what I mean.”
CJ fully understood Akagi’s words.
“I can get you out alive. So think about it. Don’t rush.”
Not saying anything, CJ stood up and prepared to leave.
“You speak perfect Japanese. I might even be able to get you a Japanese passport.” Akagi added, “Then you can go wherever you want and do whatever you want.”

Recent Release Review! Their Bride (The Marriage Lottery # 2.5) Stasia Black & A.S. Green!
Their Bride - A.S. Green,Stasia Black

All Vanessa ever wanted was to be loved.
Okay, strike that—all she wanted was not to die at the hands of the homicidal maniac who was obsessed with hunting her down—AND to be loved.
Was that too much to ask?

Going to Jacob’s Well and becoming a Lottery Bride sounded like it would make all Vanessa’s dreams come true.

For the first time in her life, she’d have a family. For the first time in her life, she’d have not just one person to love her, but FIVE.

And she’d be safe from the notorious female slave trader, Lorenzo Bernal.

There’s just one teeny, tiny problem.

When the lottery husbands are announced, it turns out none of them intentionally entered. And they want out of the bargain.

*Events of this novel occur at the same time as events in Book 2 in the series but Their Bride is a full-length, standalone novel in the series.

“Their Bride” is full of emotions, passion and excitement that keeps readers glued to the pages.

These strong, appealing characters capture the hearts of readers as each has vulnerabilities and issues that hinder their relationship which provides lots of emotional turmoil during all the sizzling chemistry and heated passions of this captivating romance. Vanessa is a strong courageous woman with a challenging past that has kept her on the run but she remains strong and strives to make her own dreams come true which readers can certainly relate to and all the men easily ensure that readers want to help them overcome their problems and reach for happiness. Each of the men are different with unique issues so this adds variety and ensures that readers are never bored throughout this romance.

The fast paced and smooth flowing plot is not full of blazing hot passion and steamy sex scenes but it is also full of excitement, danger and a few surprising twists involving each of the characters which keep readers glued to the pages. This story references some of the events that take place in “Theirs to Protect” and continues a bit further in the future than where it ended, so while the story is standalone and can be read before the second book, for readers to get the most enjoyment out of the books, the series should be read in order due to the overall events that take place throughout the series.

I found that reading “Their Bride" actually made “Theirs to Protect” even better because this one made things more complete having read both books and I really can’t wait to find out what happens next in the series.

Stasia was born in Georgia, grew up in Texas, recently spent a freezing five-year stint in Minnesota, and now is happily planted in sunny California, which she will never, ever leave.

She loves writing, reading, listening to podcasts, and has recently taken up biking after a twenty-year sabbatical (and has the bumps and bruises to prove it). She lives with her own personal cheerleader, aka, her handsome husband, and their teenage son. Wow. Typing that makes her feel old. And writing about herself in the third person makes her feel a little like a nutjob, but ahem! Where were we?

Stasia’s drawn to romantic stories that don’t take the easy way out. She wants to see beneath people’s veneer and poke into their dark places, their twisted motives, and their deepest desires. Basically, she wants to create characters that make readers alternately laugh, cry ugly tears, want to toss their kindles across the room, and then declare they have a new FBB (forever book boyfriend).

Review! Alien Encounter Box Set (Alien Encounter #1-3) Shelley Munro!
Alien Encounter Box Set - Shelley Munro

Aliens crash-land on Earth, and the chaos begins…

Hinekiri is an explorer, an adventurer and a successful map-maker from the planet of Dalcon. She travels through space, charting unexplored territories. Hinekiri’s maps are valuable, and she has attracted thieves who covet her charts.

Janaya, Hinekiri’s niece, is an elite bodyguard on Dalcon. She wants to protect her favorite aunt from the lowlifes intent on robbery. The last thing she requires is an unplanned trip to Earth or interaction with the locals.

Prince Alexandre is exhausted with court life and royal obligations. What he craves is a slice of ordinary on another planet and a different path where he is his own boss. He needs a suitable Earthman or woman to aid him in his research on a new career.

Three aliens visit the country town of Sloan - fish-out-of-water - but a new start on Earth brings opportunities, second chances and the possibility of love.

Janaya (Alien Encounter #1)

Janaya is a bodyguard on a mission. She must protect her Aunt Hinekiri from mercenaries and return to Dalcon in time to take her captain’s exam. A simple assignment for an officer of her caliber - except nothing goes as planned. Their spaceship crash-lands on Earth. No spare parts available. Big problem!

Janaya is stuck on a tiny outpost called New Zealand. She’s going to bungle her promotion chances. And because she neglected to have her travel inoculations in her urgent hurry to protect her aunt, Janaya has bonded with an Earthman...

Police officer Luke Morgan seeks a quiet life. No press. No nosy reporters. No women. Just lots of fishing and fresh country air. He doesn’t count on meeting a pair of aliens and a talking dog, or participating in a shootout with purple-suited aliens. Nor does he expect the surge of lust he experiences for Janaya. Suddenly a routine callout turns into a huge problem that Luke suspects might only be the tip of the iceberg...

Reader note: This book was previously published as Talking Dogs, Aliens and Purple People Eaters.

Hinekiri (Alien Encounter #2)

New Zealand cop Richard Morgan is settled and perhaps a tad boring. Maybe he’s a little lonely since his wife died, but there’s no need to change a lifestyle that works for him. Small-town life suits him perfectly.

Intrepid alien explorer Hinekiri walks through life alone, eager to explore uncharted worlds and try new experiences. She’s arrived on Earth to fulfill her ambition to witness the wildebeest migration in Africa. Unfortunately, she has Torgon mercenaries hot on her trail, eager to steal her valuable galaxy charts, and a niece who wants to spoil her fun!

From the minute Richard unwittingly finds himself in bed with the beautiful alien temptress it’s hard to catch his breath. Suddenly he’s lusting after Hinekiri and discovering they’re very compatible indeed! Richard’s flying in spaceships, talking to dogs and fighting Torgon mercenaries in his spare time. Danger and impulsive are his new middle names. He’s having loads of fun, but soon Hinekiri’s departure date arrives. Richard realizes he wants more than a romantic interlude in Africa.

Now all he needs to do is persuade the determined Hinekiri to his way of thinking…

Shelley Munro - Alexandre (Alien Encounter #3)

Sex!

Lily Morgan hasn’t had any since her husband ran off with his boyfriend. But, where will she find a man willing to overlook chronic clumsiness, dimpled thighs and cellulite?

Sex!

Prince Alexandre Bellangere has too much. Sex, that is. Continual treatment as a sex object is becoming a pain in the butt. Heck, he’s more than just a pretty face and muscular body. He possesses brains and ambition, yet Dalcon princes are expected to have sex, mate and breed royal undergrowns. Determined to change his life, he sneaks from the palace and leaves the planet disguised as plain Alex Bell.

Sex!

Lily Morgan takes one look at the golden stranger and starts thinking “what if?” Alex Bell sees the curvy travel agent and reconsiders his stand on sex - maybe...

Sex!

Lily’s family is not happy about her spending time with an alien. They decide to leave Killer, the talking dog, to keep an eye on the situation.

Take one chubby travel agent and an alien Dalconian prince in disguise, add in sex, laughter, endless possibilities. Combine and shake vigorously. Result... a true-blue love...

Aliens have crash-landed on Earth bringing chaos and readers get an otherworldly fun and sizzling romantic reads with three entertaining stories in one box set.

“Janaya” is on a mission to protect her aunt but due to a few mishaps finds herself bonding to an Earthman and upsetting her lifelong plans and readers can’t help but be enamored with her and Luke when during their unorthodox and spirited romance.

“Hinekiri” is an alien explorer who is all for trying new experiences but when that new experience includes an attraction to New Zealand cop, Richard Morgan, she finds herself questioning her past while running from Targon mercenaries. Readers can’t help but be charmed by both Hineriki and Richard as they explore the passion between them, take on poachers and fight the mercenaries.

“Alexandre” possesses brains and ambition but is treated as a sex object so he’s determined to change his life and Lily is not happy that she’s having to spend her time with an alien. Readers find themselves bemused and entertained with Alex and Lily’s as they discover true-blue love.

All three stories share endless possibilities, superior charm, quirky fun sizzling chemistry and a talking dog which keeps readers glued to the pages of each story as they unfold. The characters are strong, easily connected to and readers find their relationships amusing, fulfilling while the fast paced and smooth flowing plot keeps readers on their toes with witty dialogue, quirky charm and exciting adventure.

I was completely enthralled with all three stories and found that each had their own surprising twists and fun elements that made each one unique although I feel that I must warn you, the talking dog will either charm you as well, make you hungry for food or cause spontaneous laughter, well she might even cause all three, so sit back enjoy these “Alien Encounters”.

USA Today bestselling author Shelley Munro lives in Auckland, the City of Sails, with her husband and a cheeky Jack Russell/mystery breed puppy.

Typical New Zealanders, Shelley and her husband left home for their big OE soon after they married (translation of New Zealand speak – big overseas experience). A twelve month long adventure lengthened to six years of roaming the world.

Enduring memories include being almost sat on by a mountain gorilla in Rwanda, lazing on white sandy beaches in India, whale watching in Alaska, searching for leprechauns in Ireland, and dealing with ghosts in an English pub.

While travel is still a big attraction, these days Shelley is most likely found in front of her computer following another love – that of writing stories of romance and adventure. Other interests include watching rugby and rugby league (strictly for research purposes), and curling up with a good book.

Excerpt 2:

Cami didn’t bother trying to make conversation with Captain Qaelan Forster as they left the noise and stale-alcohol smell of the bar and headed out into the balmy night. He hadn’t followed her for some kind of deep-and-meaningful or even the slightest bit of small talk.

The only thing he was interested in wasn’t going to require any words. Well, not any coherent ones, anyway. Not that she was looking for anyone to talk to. The last run for her father hadn’t gone well, and she’d ducked into the bar to avoid seeing him. He probably wouldn’t say anything about it, and he couldn’t be more pissed at her than she was at herself. But he’d get that look. The one that said she’d disappointed him. And she hated that look more than anything. Would rather he yelled at her.

So, leaving the bar with the infamous Qaelan Forster hadn’t really been about him at all. It’d been about avoiding her father. And for the fact she was sick of her demon princess- of-hell reputation. Sure, it was well warranted, and she’d always thought it didn’t matter that a bunch of people who weren’t significant thought she was an unfeeling callous bitch who believed they were all beneath her.

But for some reason, tonight it had gotten to her. Qaelan Forster had been there, and she couldn’t deny the tall, dark haired, blue-eyed captain was seriously hot, just like she’d heard. Kissing him to shut up a few morons up hadn’t been a chore at all.

In fact, it’d been the exact opposite. An instant fire had lit up her blood, and while initially she’d been planning on ditching him as soon as they got outside, now she was trying to remember the last time she’d let anyone get close to her. It’d been almost two years ago, that gorgeous blond waiter she’d seen a handful of times passing through a space station not too far out of the Belt.

Claude had been the first and only casual relationship she’d had. She’d thought if it wasn’t serious, then her father would be less likely to interfere or threaten anyone. Turned out she’d been wrong. He’d still managed to have a hand in messing things up. Truth be told, her heart hadn’t been in it, so she hadn’t been all that devastated.

Though her handful of other relationships had been short, she’d never had a one-night-stand with a complete stranger before—usually she was at least somewhat familiar with her partner.

And she couldn’t actually remember the last guy she’d been serious about, not clearly anyway. Her father had probably gotten him killed, or banished him, or some equally ridiculous overreaction. The second she ever looked at a guy twice, her father was plotting murder and mayhem. She glanced at Qaelan as they silently walked through the bright, night-lit streets, people spilling out of all kinds of establishments or shopping in the bazaar. Life in Tripoli never stopped. The party just kept rolling on.

Qaelan had his hands in his pockets, casting her glances every now and then, probably trying to figure her out. Men were always trying to figure her out. It annoyed the crap out of her.

For half a second, she considered cutting him loose again. Her father favored Qaelan and his even-more infamous cousin, Rian Sherron. He’d be seriously pissed if he found out Qaelan had touched her, let alone anything else. But maybe that favoritism would mean Qaelan would simply get banished, not dead. And that would only happen if her father found out…

Jess has been making up stories ever since she can remember. Though her messy handwriting made it hard for anyone else to read them, she wasn’t deterred and now she gets to make up stories for a living. She loves loud music, a good book on a rainy day, and probably spends too much time watching too many TV shows. Jess lives in regional Victoria, Australia, with her very supportive husband, three daughters, one hyper-active border collie dog, one bunny with anger management issues, and one cat who thinks he’s one of the kids.

The Culling by Ramona Finn
The Culling (The Culling Trilogy Book 1) - Ramona Finn

It took me a while to get into this book but I’m glad I stuck with it. I really enjoyed the characters and the main struggle. Glade Io is a pretty standard main character. She’s likable but a bit flawed in her absolute belief in the Authority. Still, I felt it was true to her character that she wouldn’t immediately believe those that oppose the Authority. It’s that struggle (Glade’s ability to parse the truth) that really drew me in.

The Ferrymen of Charon are your standard rebels or resistance. They just want to protect their families and have enough to live a decent life. Coopier inherited the leadership of the Ferrymen when his brother Loose died. The Ferrymen have come up with a plan to take out the Authority, but they need a Data Point and set about kidnapping a few (Glade and Sulia). This is where things finally got interesting for me. Glade’s 16 years of believing in the Authority are challenged by the Ferrymen (how they act & what they show her) and her world begins to crumble a bit.

Back at the Authority, Glade continues to train under Don, her long-term mentor. The story has set up a love triangle and love triangles are not my thing. It rarely works for me and it doesn’t work here. Despite that, I like Don and his own inner struggle – to trust Glade, hold true to the Authority, hate the Ferrymen.

The main premise of the tale is that specially trained people with a very specific personality (a little sociopathy, still maleable, highly intelligent, etc.) can work with specialized tech to read another person’s brainwaves and then snuff them out. Yep. Snuff out hundreds to thousands of people from afar. Planetwide but sometimes from other planets. I couldn’t help but shake my head at this. The writing could have made this a bit more believable but it was real loose and ridiculous.

Also there were small things that just didn’t ring true. The Authority monitors the Data Points during training… yet not during an actual culling? Some of the Data Points take up communicating silently through their tech and yet it’s not a common practice and is apparently unmonitored? Unlikely. Also, Glade is considered rather important and yet they don’t monitor all her movements all the time through her tech? It would be so simple to do…. So because of all these small things like this, I often felt the writing was lazy instead of giving us a story with solid, realistic rules.

On the other hand, the emotions of the characters and how some of them grow throughout the story kept me engaged. Even Sulia, who is a jerk, might have something more going on than just what we see on the surface. Because of the characters, I look forward to Book 2. 4/5 stars.

The Narration: Stacey Glemboski did a great job with this book. She had distinct voices for all the characters and her male voices were believable. I really liked her voice for Coopier’s little brother and for Sulia when she’s being nasty. There’s plenty of tense emotions in this story and Glemboski did a great job portraying them. There were no technical issues with this recording. 5/5 stars.
