Forgiveness For My Mate
Sanctuary For My Mate Book 1
by Terri A. Wilson
Genre: Paranormal Romance

Tatum’s perfect, well-planned life crashed one piece at a time. After small mistakes led to bigger ones, she’s ready to give up and walk away from the only dream she ever knew. A trip to a New Mexico retreat sounds like the best way to pull herself together. Then she met Connor, a hot falcon shifter who shows her a whole new world full of possibilities she never imagined. Connor’s falcon claimed her at first glance. Now faced with her inner demons, can she learn to forgive herself and stop the cycle of self-destruction? Will his love be enough to calm the anxiety and fears that prevent her from finding the life she never knew she wanted?

The first book in the Sanctuary for My Mate series is a stirring read that captures reader’s attentions and refuses to let go. Tatum and Connor are two strong characters that easily draw readers to them while providing readers with traits that make them come to life. The romance is sweet and the chemistry between them sizzles with lots of heat but this relationship is not one that will be hurried along as Tatum not only has some emotional issues that she has to overcome but she’s facing a reality that she may not can accept which keeps readers holding their breath with suspense as they await the conclusion. The story is fast paced and has some exciting events throughout to keep readers on their toes. The author has created a fascinating world for her characters one that while supernatural is natural and inspires readers’ imaginations.

EXCERPT 1

Connor shrugged and disappeared behind the corner again and returned empty-handed. “So, what do you do in the outside world?”

“I worked.”

“You must have worked in the medical field to spend the day with Hank. What were you? A nurse?”

“No. For your information, I worked as a doctor in an emergency room.” She crossed her arms and glared at him daring him to make a smart-ass remark.

He held a hand over his heart and bowed at the waist. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to piss you off. I guess that was rather sexist of me to assume you were a nurse.”

“It happens all the time,” she said with clenched teeth.

“I bet it does. It’s kind of like people had a hard time believing what I did before coming here.”

Tatum watched his shoulder flex as he opened the jars of mayonnaise and mustard. She didn’t understand what was drawing her to him, but she could not focus on making a sandwich.

“I was a model.”

She snickered. “A model? Like an underwear model?” Oh crap. Now the only thing she could picture was him in nothing but underwear.

He put down his food and wiped his mouth with a napkin. “Yes, and I modeled for other things too.”

“For real?”

“Is it that hard to see me as a model?”

Is he flirting?

“Let me see. Step away and walk toward me like you were on a runway.”

He spit out his drink laughing so hard. “Are you kidding me?”

“No.” She crossed her arms and leaned her hip against the counter. “Maybe do a little Magic Mike, just for fun.”

“Is that a challenge?” Connor crossed his arms.

Tatum nodded.

“Challenge accepted.” Connor pulled out his phone, cued up a sultry, techno-beat song, and walked away. He unbuttoned his shirt a little and untucked it from his jeans then ran his fingers through his hair to make it stand up a little more.

Oh, this will be good.

Tatum watched as he transformed into a runway model complete with a pouty frown and a come-fuck-me look in his eyes. As much as she resisted not focusing on his hard chest showing through his shirt, her face warmed as her nipples grew hard and tingled. She feigned annoyance but wanted to rip off his clothes.

He pumped his pelvis against her pushing her off balance. He squatted down, put his hands behind her knees, and ran them up the sides of her body. When he stared into her eyes, she couldn’t breathe. When he leaned in, her eyes closed with no hesitation, his warm breath on her lips.

The song ended, and he stepped back. “So, do you believe me now?”

It took Tatum a minute to control the electricity shooting throughout her body.

“Uh, excuse me?” She shook her head. “I didn’t hear what you said.”

“Oh, really? Well, do you believe me now?”

Embarrassed, she turned away and focused on making her dinner. “I’ve seen better.”

He stood next to her and spread mayonnaise on his bread. “Oh, come on. I was hot, and you know it.”

“Whatever.” Tatum took a bite from her sandwich.

Harmony For My Mate
Sanctuary for My Mate Book 2

How do you choose between two women, when only the love of both will bring you harmony?

Cameron was born a falcon shifter, but when his arrogance prompted a total disregard to safety, he was attacked by a bear shifter. Living with two predatory animals who want control makes it hard to find peace. When he meets the new chef, Eliza, his bear recognizes his mate, but his falcon longs for Skylar. When an opportunity presents itself that will make all the three happy, Eliza’s heart fights against her traditional upbringing. Faced with a choice, she retreats into fear and uncertainty. Skylar knows her love is not confined to a predetermined set of societal norms. She has to break through the walls Cameron and Eliza built, but that’s not easy when Cam’s heart is split in two and Eliza refuses to believe she deserves happiness. Can three unique hearts turn their back on tradition and forge a new type of bond in order to bring harmony to their life?

The second story is this fascinating new series is kind of cutesy and whimsical but at the same time gritty and thought provoking which compels readers to settle in and read this story from start to finish. Harmony is hard to achieve within a group but it’s really hard to achieve within yourself and this romance explores that concept from all perspectives as these strong, bold characters captures readers’ hearts with all the emotional turmoil that comes from trying to achieve that state. The love triangle that Cameron, Elia and Skylar find themselves has them questioning everything they know and really confusing them which keeps the emotional turbulence at an all-time high which keeps readers in suspense of the all-important happily ever after for this threesome and the unique situation they are trying to untangle. There quite a few exciting surprises and twists to keep readers guessing as the suspense keeps readers on the edge and since the author does a great job of bringing her world and her characters to life, it’s easy for readers to imagine each and every scene.

EXCERPT 2

She pulled away and saw Skylar in a new way. This woman, who was at least ten years her junior, showed more wisdom and compassion than Eliza knew possible.

Something in her eyes tugged at an intense level of passion. High on emotion, she leaned in and kissed Skylar’s full mouth. Skylar’s soft lips parted as she pulled Eliza against her. Years of practiced decorum screamed in Eliza’s head as she cupped Sky’s face with her hands. The contrast between the softness of this woman’s mouth and the strength of Cameron’s elicited an emotion she was unprepared to experience. In a moment of panic, she pulled back and glanced at the floor to hide her embarrassment.

“Oh, um, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have done that. I don’t know what came over me.”

She reached for the cookie plate, found a container, and put the cookies away.

“Don’t be sorry. I’m not. It was a genuine emotion from you and I’m glad I was here to share it with you.”

Eliza tilted her head, confused. “I don’t understand. You and Cameron are together. Right?”

“Yes, we are. Sorta.”

Eliza stood in front of the lady with an opened, unsure what to say.

Skylar snickered. “I understand your confusion.” She scanned the kitchen. “There’s no alcohol at the retreat, but please tell me you have a stash of something stronger than coffee.”

Eliza winked. She went to a planter sitting on her desk, pulled out the silk plant, and produced a bottle of vanilla vodka.

Skylar laughed. “You are too much. You hide cookies and sweets all over the place for people to search and find, but vodka sits in almost plain sight on your desk?”

Eliza nodded. “And as far as I know, no one’s found it.” She put down two glasses and filled them with the tawny liquid. “I’ve been working on Caleb to change the alcohol situation around here. I mean he’s got his stash of wine and Cameron has his stash of beer. He’s worried it will go against the image he wants for this place. It’s stupid. A good glass of wine enhances a meal.”

“Caleb is a little stiff. I have a hard time seeing him and Wednesday together, but they seem happy.”

“Yes, they do. Sometimes opposites attract. I don’t know him that much on a personal level, but I get the impression he would be worse without her.”

“I knew him before he met Wednesday. You’re right.” She held up her drink. “To Wednesday.”

They clinked glasses and Eliza added, “To Wednesday.”

An awkward silence fell between the two ladies. Eliza wanted to say something but had no idea where to start.

“You don’t have to be afraid of what happened,” Skylar said.

“I don’t know what came over me. I mean, I don’t go around kissing girls. I’m not that kind of person.” She covered her mouth with her hand worried her tone might have offended Skylar.

“And just what kind of person kisses women?”

“Um, I mean, uh…”

Skylar tipped her glass back and set it on the butcher block. “Relax, Eliza. I’m joking with you. It’s okay to say lesbian. It’s not a bad word.”

“Is that what you are?”

“What?”

Eliza’s mouth twitched. “What you said.”

“What did I say?”

“You know, what you called yourself.” She furrowed her brow.

“Does that word make you uncomfortable?”

“No.” Eliza shifted on her stool.

“Then say it.”

“Fine. Whatever. Are you a lesbian?”

“No.” Skylar added more alcohol to their glasses.

“I don’t understand. Did our kiss make you feel uncomfortable?”

“No. As much fun as it is to watch you squirm, let me help you out. I’m in love with love. I’m attracted to people based on my need to love and be loved. Some people call me a bisexual, but that label feels too narrow for me. I don’t go out and have sex with any and everyone. When I first became sexual, I was attracted to females.

My family hated it but learned to accept it despite our priest damning me to hell.

Then I met Wyatt’s father. He identified as a homosexual, but our connection grabbed me and wouldn’t let me go. Though we were compatible in bed, it didn’t go beyond that no matter how hard we tried. My parents were elated because they thought they cured me.” She used air quotes emphasizing the word cured. “I understand that love isn’t as simple as we’d all like to believe. Intimacy is the most passionate way to share that love.”

“How do you identify?” This subject was new to Eliza and though it challenged some of her learned ideas, she respected her friend.

“If I had to label myself, I’m what you might consider a pansexual, but even that term is debated everywhere. So, I don’t label myself. It’s not something I need to do to feel better.”

“Are you attracted to Cameron?”

Skylar finished her drink and poured another one. “Very much so, but you already knew that, didn’t you?”

Eliza nodded.

“So, are you?”

Eliza nodded again. “It makes little sense to me.”

“What doesn’t make sense?”

“Well, for one thing, he’s way younger than me. And for another thing, I don’t want to come between the two of you.”

“Eliza, age is just a number. And you can’t come between us if you are a part of us.”

Eliza poured herself another drink. “Bonding was never an important consideration in my family, but I’ve learned enough to know it’s between two people.”

“That’s what I’ve always thought too. But I’m just as drawn to you as I am to Cameron.”

Eliza blushed and batted her eyes. “You are?”

“You’re cute when you play coy,” Skylar teased. “Love and sex are different. I don’t think any of us are ready to commit to love, but it might be worth exploring.” She held up her glass for a toast.

Eliza didn’t understand the power of love, but something pulled her to these two. She met Skylar’s glass. Maybe it was worth exploring.

INTERVIEW WITH TERRI A. WILSON

What is something unique/quirky about you?

I like to eat my food in even servings. Like for instance, I would rather eat two cookies instead of one and I get twitchy if you serve me three. I also constantly rearrange my eggs in the carton to keep it balanced and I hate when there is an odd number of eggs.

Tell us something really interesting that's happened to you!

In 2009, I had my second daughter at home. My first delivery wasn’t bad, but my experience at the hospital was less than desired. The second delivery went so well, I would have another one in an NY Minute. I made a lousy pregnant woman. I didn’t really like being pregnant, but the actual delivery was awesome and I’d do it again.

What are some of your pet peeves?

I really hate people who are inflexible and refuse to see another point of view. I also can’t stand to be scared.

Where were you born/grew up at?

I was born in San Antonio Texas, but I spent most of my life in California. I’ve lived in North Carolina since 2006.

If you knew you'd die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?

Holding my husband’s hand.

Who is your hero and why?

Buffy from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. She’s just flippin’ awesome.

What kind of world ruler would you be?

Not a very good one because I get bored easily, I hate dealing with conflict, and I expect people to do the right thing.

What are you passionate about these days?

Writing, coffee, and chocolate

What do you do to unwind and relax?

I love my bed. My room is dark and we try to keep it cold. For me, I love to just lie in my bed with the lights out. I don’t really sleep, but it’s quiet and I can think.

How to find time to write as a parent?

I have my laptop opened all the time and I use multiple devices that sync together.

Describe yourself in 5 words or less!

Sarcastic, Loyal, Foul-mouthed, Creative, Clever

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

I still don’t because it hasn’t sunk into my head yet. When I see my name on a book, I have a hard time connecting that it’s my name.

Do you have a favorite movie?

Yes, many. Practical Magic and Steele Magnolias being at the top.

Which of your novels can you imagine made into a movie?

When I write, the story plays out in my head like a movie. So I guess all of them.

What literary pilgrimages have you gone on?

I went to Pompola, Spain for the running of the bulls and to visit the bar where Hemingway spent a lot of his time.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

Dragon because it’s fierce and beautiful at the same time.

What inspired you to write this book?

It may sound cliché, but there are a lot of characters who live in my head and they fight for dominance. Whoever wins the round when I start a new story gets their story told and then I just let them tell it.

What can we expect from you in the future?

I want to explore combining historical fiction with paranormal stories.

How did you come up with the concept and characters for the book?

They speak to me.

Where did you come up with the names in the story?

Top 100 Baby Names and the Coke bottles that come out in the summer.

What did you enjoy most about writing this book?

Researching

Tell us about your main characters- what makes them tick?

Skylar is the most confident person I know. Eliza needs acceptance and can cook. Cameron has to accept he’s different and that’s okay.

Who designed your book covers?

B Creative Designs

If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?

I’d like to see it a little longer.

Did you learn anything during the writing of your recent book?

Yes. I have a hard time focusing for long periods of time.

If your book was made into a film, who would you like to play the lead?

Skylar- Margot Robbie (but with dark hair)
Eliza- ???? Sarah Shahi
Cameron- Alex Pettyfer (based on looks only, I’ve never seen him act)

Anything specific you want to tell your readers?

When you read Harmony For My Mate or any books from that series, I hope you connect with the characters and they help you examine your own life.
Don’t assume it’s a typical menage story. Be open to examining your accepted ideas of love.

How did you come up with the name of this book?

It’s one of the words I think of when I think about the idea of sanctuary.

What is your favorite part of this book and why?

Writing the scenes with Skylar and Eliza because I had to look at love in a new way.

If you could spend time with a character from your book whom would it be? And what would you do during that day?

Eliza- she’s a chef

Are your characters based off real people or did they all come entirely from your imagination?

There’s a little bit of me in every female character I write and a little of my husband in every male character I write. Other than that there is no one specific.

Do your characters seem to hijack the story or do you feel like you have the reigns of the story?

Characters

Convince us why you feel your book is a must-read.

Because this book will move you and help you escape your world for a little bit.

Have you written any other books that are not published?

Yes.

If your book had a candle, what scent would it be?

Clean Cotton

Thunder erupted again in the distance. The splash of a second cannonball, closer than the first, rocked The Mutineer. But had the cannon fire come from Fog Island or another vessel? “Who’s after us?” Sam shouted.

The man who had saved them sprinted to the tiller to take control of the sloop before he bothered to answer Sam’s question. He pulled sharply on the tiller. The sloop lurched to the right until the deck nearly touched water. Sam fell and rolled against a crate. Seawater spilled into the boat and drenched him. His back tingled again.

The burning blade! Did it call to him? If so, he ignored it. A fire sword magically embedded in his back would not stop The Mutineer from capsizing, which the boat was about to do. It didn’t. Instead, the sloop’s speed doubled as the man brought the craft in line with a stronger windstream.

“Look!” the man pointed to the right of The Mutineer. Sam, now back on his feet, stared in the direction he pointed. Through the darkness was the outline of a large craft three stories high. “The way I see it,” the man shouted over the crash of water against his ship’s hull, “if Maximilian Black is after you, you must have angered Captain Jem Slayer. Slayer is a bloodthirsty pirate with his own fleet and enough wealth to command an army of pirates; and Black is Slayer’s right hand.”

Sam held onto the railing for balance and inched closer to Sarah. She watched the mystery man from the side as if… as if she doesn’t want to make eye contact. Maybe she doesn’t trust him as much as she said. Maybe she senses something.

Sarah grasped his hand and gently squeezed.

He nodded to her. “It’s going to be all right,” he lied.

The man continued to shout his explanation. “Since Black failed, I assume Slayer has sent a warship to do what Black could not. Kill you!” He looked at the sails of his sloop. “Hang on, young ones! We are going to race the wind!”

One more explosion cut through the night. A cannonball screamed as it hurtled toward them. “No!” Sam mouthed moments before the cannonball splashed into the sea yards from the hull. Water sprayed onto the deck.

“Ha, you bloody heathens! You shall not catch The Mutineer tonight!” The man held the tiller with one hand and shook a fist with the other.

As they pushed farther out to sea, the moon emerged from behind a cloud and revealed the pursuing ship. The glow showed a vessel with three masts topped with squared sails.

Two rows of dark squares dotted the length of her hull— gunports. So this is what a warship looks like. We’re dead. A cloud began to eclipse the moon, but before it did, Sam saw the mark emblazoned on the flag that soared above the ship— a skull and bones. “Pirates!”

Come on, you bastard. Show yourself!

He’d had enough of this world pushing him around. Enough of Slayer. Enough death. Enough of being scared of the next threat. No more! The time had come to start kicking some ass. Closing his eyes, he concentrated on the magic within him. He had to figure a way to control his powers. To command them to life… now.

Think, Sam! Words flashed though his mind. Ancient words. An incantation. Atamou Runfora Tananou. He knew what the words meant. Serve me now. His arms and wrists vibrated. His eyes shot open. A crimson glow surrounded his stumps. Yes!

“Captain, three points off bow,” a young crewman shouted from the bow. “Looks like mountains rising from the sea.”

“What say you?” Rackham whipped out his spyglass and held it to his eye. He climbed atop a railing, grasping a shroud with one hand. “Hell’s bells. I’ve never seen the like. Devil boy, you best see this. Me thinks this be our destination.”

Sam joined Rackham at the bow. The glow around his stumps vanished. The pirate captain leaped from the railing and held the spyglass up to Sam’s eye. Peering through the telescope, Sam gaped at the discovery.

Actually, stone pillars— maybe ten in all— towered over the sea, like rows of skyscrapers along a city block. How was such a thing possible in the middle of the ocean with no shore— no island— visible in any direction? The pillars shouldn’t be there, but they were. As if by magic. “That’s where we have to go.” Sam again thought of the incantation. His stumps ignited. “Get us there, Captain. Leave the beast to me.”

A terrible roar bellowed, rocking the ship to the starboard side.

Sam stumbled against a chest. The icy touch of fear rose up his back, threatening to steal his courage. Men around him grabbed onto lines, the long guns— anything to keep from falling. When the ship righted itself, he crossed to the port side. No way was he going to cower.

This showdown was going to happen. “I’m waiting for you.”

The monster rose from the deep off the port side. A massive serpent with two reptilian heads. A serpentine body, covered with diamond-shaped scales towered over the ship’s sails. Two necks branched off, each with a dragon head and snout filled with dagger-length teeth. A line of spikes stretched from the top of each head like Mohawks.

Sam’s chest burned. His heart beat like a horse’s hooves charging over a dirt road. “Come on, you filthy snake. You want me. Here I am. Come and get me.”

Winter has come to Wildwood Cove, and riding in on the chill is Wally Fowler. Wally doesn’t see anything wrong in a little healthy competition, until he’s murdered in his own state-of-the art kitchen.

Marley isn’t surprised when the authorities sniff around The Flip Side for a motive, but it’s her best friend Lisa who gets grilled, given her sticky history with the victim. When a second murder rocks the town, it makes it harder than ever for Marley to clear Lisa’s name. Marley’s afraid that she’s next in line to die—and the way things are looking, the odds of surviving her investigation could be stacked against her.

Chapter 1

My car’s headlights cut through the darkness, illuminating the driving rain. The windshield wipers swished back and forth in a rapid rhythm as I carefully navigated my way along the deserted streets of Wildwood Cove. Normally I preferred to walk to work each morning, trekking along the beach so I could listen to the crashing waves and smell the salty air. Lately, however, I’d been making more use of my blue hatchback. Over the past several days the weather had been less than inviting, drizzling with rain if not outright pouring, and chilly enough that the occasional glob of slush splattered against my windshield along with the pelting raindrops.

The rain was supposed to let up in the next day or so, according to the weather forecast, so I hoped it wouldn’t be much longer before I could get back to enjoying my early morning walks along the shoreline. For
the moment, though, I was grateful for the warmth and shelter of my car.

When I turned into the small parking lot behind The Flip Side pancake house, I pulled up next to the only other car in the lot—a baby-blue classic Volkswagen bug belonging to The Flip Side’s chef, Ivan Kaminski. He arrived even earlier than I did each morning, as did his assistant, Tommy Park. It was barely six o’clock, but I knew the two of them would have been working for a good while already.

I shut off my car’s engine and grabbed my tote bag off the passenger seat, steeling myself for the upcoming dash through the pouring rain to the back door of the pancake house. As soon as I climbed out into the rain, I slammed the car door, ducked my head, and made a beeline for the slim bit of shelter provided by the recessed doorway.

Despite having spent mere seconds exposed to the elements, I had damp hair and droplets of water running down my face. I wiped them away with my sleeve and jiggled my ring of keys until I found the right one. As I put the key into the door, I caught sight of something white from the corner of my eye. A flyer lay plastered against the pavement, waterlogged and with a muddy footprint stamped across it.

I darted out of the shelter of the doorway and peeled the soggy paper off the ground. When I was once again out of the rain, I peered at the flyer, the exterior light above my head providing me with enough illumination to read by.

When I took in the bold black words printed across the saturated paper, my former good mood did a nosedive. I’d seen the flyer before. I’d seen several them, in fact, plastered all over town on utility poles, signposts, and community notice boards. I’d also received one in the mail. That one had gone straight into the recycling bin. This one I crumpled up in my hand as I unlocked the door, the words Wally’s Waffle Kingdom disappearing from sight as the paper scrunched up into a soggy ball.

Once inside, I unlocked the door to my office and tossed the scrunched flyer into the wastepaper basket. If I never saw another one, I’d be happy, although I knew the advertisement wasn’t the real problem. That was the Waffle Kingdom itself. The Flip Side had become a fixture in the small seaside town of Wildwood Cove, with many faithful customers who returned again and again to enjoy Ivan’s scrumptious breakfast creations. There were other restaurants and cafés around town, but none of them specialized in breakfast foods like The Flip Side did.

Up until a couple of weeks ago, I’d never really worried about competition. Then Wally Fowler had moved to town—moved back to town actually, since he’d grown up here—and my mind had remained unsettled ever since. I wasn’t about to roll over and give up on the pancake house just because of some competition, but I couldn’t keep my niggling concern at bay.

If the Waffle Kingdom’s fare was as good as the flyer proclaimed (the best waffles EVER!) it wasn’t unrealistic to think that The Flip Side would lose some of its business to the new establishment. In the summertime, when tourists flocked to the small town, that might not be such a problem. There would probably be enough business for both restaurants during those weeks. But during the rest of the year? That could be a definite issue.

I’d been hoping to give each of my three full-time employees a raise in the near future. Now I was keeping that plan to myself, unsure if I’d be able to follow through. I’d have to wait and see what happened once the waffle house opened. As Wally and his flyers had been announcing to the whole town for several days, the grand opening of the Waffle Kingdom would take place next week.

It would take time to know the full extent of the effect on The Flip Side, so I was determined to carry on as usual. I just wished I could get rid of that ever-present worry lingering at the back of my mind.

With the wet flyer in the trash and my jacket hung on the coat stand, I ran a hand through my damp curls and made my way into the dining area. I flipped on the lights, and immediately some of the tension that had crept into my shoulders fizzled away. There was something so comforting about the cozy pancake house. Like the beach and the charming town, The Flip Side had easily worked its way into my heart, becoming a second home away from my blue-and-white beachfront Victorian.

Smiling, I glanced out the large front windows, seeing nothing but inky darkness and rivulets of water running down the panes.

Well, almost nothing else.

I walked quickly across the room to the front door, bone-chilling damp air hitting me as soon as I pushed it open. Staying beneath the awning so I wouldn’t get soaked, I approached the two white rectangles taped to one of the windows, spaced a couple of feet apart. When I got close enough to recognize them as two more Waffle Kingdom flyers, I let out a growl of annoyance.

Ripping the flyers off the glass, I stormed back into the pancake house.

“Of all the nerve!”

Twenty-one-year-old Tommy Park poked his head out the pass-through window to the kitchen. “What’s up?” he asked.

I waved the crumpled flyers. “Wally the Waffle King strikes again.”
The kitchen door swung open and Ivan appeared. Tommy ducked away from the window and came through the door a second later.

“These were taped to the front window,” I said, waving the flyers again. Ivan grabbed one and glowered at the piece of paper. While an intimidating scowl was the chef’s typical expression, this one was far
darker than usual.

“He’s rubbing your nose in it,” he declared, crumpling the flyer as his large hand closed into a fist.

Tommy took the other flyer from me. “Totally not cool.”

“It’s one thing to open up a waffle house that will compete directly with us,” I said, “but it’s hitting a new low by plastering the ads all over the front of this place.”

“He’s trying to get under your skin.” Ivan tossed the crumpled flyer
toward the wastepaper basket, making a perfect shot. “But why? Does he really think annoying us will get us to close up shop so all our business goes his way?”

“Not going to happen,” Tommy said.

“Definitely not,” I agreed. “But why else try to aggravate us?”

“Probably for fun,” Ivan said. “Some people enjoy riling others up.”

“That’s true.” I’d learned that firsthand several months back when a bitter and vengeful woman had tried to make my life miserable.

“And I hear Wally Fowler’s a slimeball,” Tommy said. “I’m not sure anyone in town actually likes him.”

Ivan nodded his agreement. “Wildwood Cove would be better off without him.”

If enough people believed that, maybe I had nothing to worry about. The townsfolk weren’t likely to give the self-proclaimed Waffle King their business if they despised him.

“I guess it’s best to ignore him and focus on keeping our customers happy, like we always do,” I decided.

“Sounds like a plan.” With a flick of his wrist, Tommy sent the second flyer arcing into the trash can.

He returned to the kitchen and Ivan followed after him, his scowl as dark as ever. Was he more worried about the new waffle house than he was letting on? With his bulging muscles, numerous tattoos, and dark, intense eyes, Ivan wasn’t one to be easily fazed. But something in his face led me to believe he was taking the potential problem posed by Wally and his waffle house very seriously.

My worries tried to resurface, but I forced them back down, focusing on starting a fire in the stone fireplace to keep myself busy. The Flip Side would be fine, I told myself. It was a well-established restaurant, with a solid and loyal customer base that loved Ivan’s cooking and the cozy atmosphere.

Surely it would take more than Wally the Waffle King to destroy what we had here. After all, how much damage could one man cause?

She traveled South Mississippi with her socially motivated one act plays using the Theater for Social Change model.

In 2015, SA moved to Atlanta and felt it was time to bring Still Not Satisfied to life. She found Prodigy Gold Books, a press out of Philadelphia and a dream was born.

In addition to her novel, she has launched her own production company, SAB Entertainment. Through this channel, SA is writing and producing short films. In May 2018, she produced her first full stage play, Family Lies and plans to tour the Southeast with it in 2019. Prologue

Is this what dying feels like?

Phil Bancroft ran his tongue over his dry lips. Where did that thought come from? He watched Dee, the woman he loved, touch the tip of the gleaming gold dagger. This was not the homecoming he had expected. He had only just returned from New York and they should be in each other’s arms. Dee had told him Paula took the pills and now she was dead. Poor Paula. Phil wished he could feel remorse for his dead wife. Guilt. Anything. After all, she was an innocent obstacle who had been murdered at his lover’s hands. Her only crime was to have been sole inheritor of her father’s fortune. If that man had not cut his younger daughter—Dee—out of his will, Paula would still be alive today. They could have divorced and gone their separate ways. It was his fault she had to be killed.

Everything they had wanted was now theirs, but Dee seemed different somehow. Distant. A smile played on her lips, but not her usual lighthearted smile. No, this one was almost…cruel.

“What are you doing with that, Dee?” he asked, nodding at the dagger.

She shook her head. “Not Dee. She is gone.”

Phil held out his hand to take the weapon from her and wondered why his fingers trembled. “Don’t mess around. Give me the dagger before one of us gets hurt.”

Her smile twisted into a snarl. Surely her eyes weren’t that color? Dark blue. No, violet. Dee has brown eyes.

The library door burst open and a familiar figure strode in. Stefan Bloch—the estate agent in whose hands the owners of the magnificent Villa Dürnstein had placed responsibility for administering the lease. But he had no business here today.

“What are you doing here?” The words died on Phil’s lips. The estate agent ignored him, made straight for Dee, and took her in his arms. “What the hell?” Phil lurched forward and grabbed Stefan’s arms. He tried to drag him off the woman who was responding all too passionately.

Stefan let Dee go and wheeled round, landing a stinging blow to the side of Phil’s head. He staggered and fell hard against the library desk.

The man and the woman towered over him as he lay sprawled on the floor, his hand checking his jaw for damage.

Phil stared at them. He no longer knew these people. Oh, they looked the same, but their eyes told a different tale. Dee and Stefan were no longer there. So who were they?

As if she had read his thoughts, the woman spoke. “You are right to cower before us. The woman you knew as Dee is no longer here. Her spirit has passed over. I, Arsinoe, Queen of Egypt and the Nile, inhabit her body.” She indicated Stefan. “The man who inhabited this body is also gone. My lover, Nebunaten, has been reborn in him, but this body is dying. He needs a healthy host.”

He heard the words, but they couldn’t be true. Someone was playing a cruel joke. Maybe Paula wasn’t dead after all. Yes, that was it, she must be behind all this. He scrambled to his feet. “Stop this right now. I don’t know what the hell’s going on here, but if you seriously expect me to believe anything you’ve just told me, you are mistaken. Dee—”

He watched incredulously as the woman he loved threw back her head and laughed. A horrible, hollow sound. “Still you will not believe. You think your lover killed your wife with pills. She did not. She killed her with this.” She waved the dagger. “And that was the last memory your Dee took with her into the afterlife. With the god Set and goddess Sekhmet to aid me, I took her body, just as Nebunaten took the man’s. Now it is your turn to surrender your earthly form.”

The blade flashed once. Twice. Blood spurted from two deep wounds in his chest. His limbs grew heavier, as if someone had attached lead weights to them. Everything slowed as he sank to his knees, blood pouring through his hands as he desperately fought, in vain, to stanch the flow. A low growl echoed through his brain. The figure of a cat stood on its hind legs, changing to a half-human form before his rapidly dimming eyes. The woman spoke in a foreign tongue and the man took hold of Phil’s shoulders. Something tugged at his spirit, dragging it out of his body as a dark cloud descended on his mind.

This is what dying feels like.

And then he knew no more.

The man looked down at his scattered ashes. “I am growing tired of waiting. When will I be free of this prison?”

“Soon.” The woman moved away in that fluid, ethereal manner of hers. Her scarlet gown flowed around her. An armlet shaped in the goddess Isis’s symbol—a coiled cobra—gleamed. Heavy black kohl rimmed her eyes, emphasizing the deep violet of her irises, while her long, black hair, set in many tight braids, reached her waist. “You must be patient,” the woman said. “I told you I would help you get what you desire.”

“But that isn’t possible. She is back in her body. Back in her tomb.”

“All is possible. I have the power. Haven’t I proved it? Aren’t you the proof of it?”

“I still don’t live.”

“Your spirit lives.”

“My spirit cannot touch her.”

“But it can touch her spirit. Mate with her spirit if you so desire.”

“And why would you do this for me?”

“My revenge is incomplete. My murdering sister rests while I am forced to wander in spirit with no substance of my own.”

“And how will it be done? I am in your hands. This is not comfortable for me. I am always in control.”

The woman threw back her head and laughed, showing black, rotten teeth. Stinking, no doubt, if he could smell anything.

“You have not been in control for a long time. The god I serve is Set, and he is in control. He will come and he will work through me. More powerful this time, for Sekhmet will bring him.”

“And I will have my queen?”

“You will have her.”

“She will be in the one who is here now?”

“That is to be determined.”

“But this one is not of the blood.”

“She will not be possessed, but transformed. We do not need a blood relative.”

“That has been tried before. And failed.”

“The rules were not properly followed. You cannot possess all of her. You have seen that. The gods will not allow it. Her spirit must be divided. Some of it must remain with her body—and lie cold in her tomb. Waiting. Always waiting. In that way, the gods are appeased and my price is also exacted.”

“So part of my queen will still wander, looking for her lover, but enough of her spirit will be released to come to me.”

“Now you understand. You will have all that you desire, and my revenge will not be compromised.”

“And I can be with her. For all time.”

The woman didn’t answer. She gave the merest hint of a smile and passed on.

In his world of shadows, Dr. Emeryk Quintillus waited.

Cat Cults

(See Cat Cults pix 1)

Those of you who are cat fanatics (like me) will already know that, in ancient Egypt, cats were worshipped. Not that they have ever allowed us to forget it. So, today, I thought I'd explore this whole cult of the cat in a little more depth.
It all seems to have started during the Egyptian New Kingdom (1540-1070 BC) when their status was elevated from that of useful, and rather charming, hunter's assistant, to a religious cult. This was, however, only the start.

(See Cat Cults pix 2)

The great cat goddess Bast (aka Bastis, Bastet or Pasht) had, by the time of Shoshenq I (945-924 BC approx.) officially achieved mainstream religious status and it was this Pharaoh who established the town of Bubastis (near Cairo) as a centre of worship for followers of this rather charming deity.

An enormous red granite temple complex attracted pilgrims in their thousands who feasted, wined and danced in her honour. What a cat!

(See Cat Cults pix 3)

The domestic cat in Egypt didn't fare too badly either. They were treated with as much reverence and consideration as any member of the family. If they could afford it, people would adorn their cats with golden and jewelled collars, and when one died, they were mummified and buried with due ceremony and a supply of dead mice to feed them on their journey into the afterlife. Their owners would shave their own eyebrows as a mark of respect and enter a period of mourning. A massive cat graveyard existed at Bubastis (some 720 cu. feet) but excavations are still revealing evidence of more in other parts of Egypt.

Cat worship continued long after the Pharaohs and from as late as 200BC, there is still evidence that Bast was being worshipped.

So why did Egyptians elevate the cat to such ranks of devotion? The foundations of their road to divinity were laid many centuries before they took their lofty, elevated place.

They were seen as good mothers and their prowess as hunters, ability to keep mice away from crops and even their willingness to attack snakes secured them their positions as helpmates. Without their intervention and good housekeeping, rodents could easily have destroyed the crops and left the people to starve, so they were seen as protectors of the household. From there, it was just one step up to full religious status, initially as companion to Isis, wife of the great god Osiris (lord of the underworld). Bast, as daughter of the sun god Ra, protected homes, pregnant women and families but the fun loving, hedonistic side of the cat's nature also secured her a place as goddess of pleasure, music, dance and plenty.

In the many centuries since those heady days, cats have enjoyed mixed fortunes, until we reach the pet and companion status of today.

But next time you bend down to stroke your purring tabby, just remember the old saying:

Cats look down on you,

Dogs look up to you,

Pigs is equal

And to this day, female cats are still known as Queens. They see no reason why you shouldn’t continue to worship them.

In my latest novel – Damned by the Ancients – a cat features prominently, as do a cat goddess or two.
