By the time they left Bob’s, the streets were empty. Colton hadn’t lost track of time like that in…more years than he cared to think about.

He stopped in front of her shop and took her hand. “Thank you for the unexpected evening.” He brushed a kiss to her knuckles. “I hope it won’t be our last.”

Skye grinned, her cheeks still flushed with the Drunken Pirate drinks Bob kept pushing on them. “I thought you only had eyes for your ship.”

God, she was beautiful. “Until I met you.”

“So you do know how to be charming.” She took a step closer, looking up at him. “Maybe you could give me a proper tour sometime.”

Oh, he wanted to give her so much more than a tour. He brought his hand up to caress her cheek. “Anytime.”

“How about now?”

His heart thumped in his chest, and alcohol warmed his gut. Given the choice between sitting alone worrying about Eli and whether or not the curse was ending, or spending more time with her…ah hell that wasn’t even a choice. “Why not?”

He took her hand again, enjoying the spark of fire that lit through his bloodstream and led her through the fog toward River Street.

Seeing the usually bustling area empty was equally beautiful and haunting. It brought back memories of earlier days. Centuries before cell phones and email. Back when his crew would drop anchor in the cloak of night and shanghai new crew members out of the pubs.

Lifetimes ago.

He walked her across the gangplank and hopped down onto the deck. Turning back, he reached up to clasp her waist.

Her eyes widened. “Wasn’t there a step before?”

“Aye.” He nodded. “It’s for tourists.”

She still didn’t move. “So I’m not a tourist anymore?”

“No.” He shook his head and lowered her to the deck. Staring down into her eyes, his hands slid up her sides. “You’re my guest.”

She tipped her chin up toward him. He couldn’t resist the invitation, bending to kiss her lips. He hummed into her mouth as she opened, welcoming his exploration. She tasted like rum, root beer, and something wild he couldn’t place, but it didn’t matter. He wanted more.

Craved it.

Her hands moved up his chest, as he clenched a handful of her silky hair in his fist. He held her tighter. God, she was made for his arms. His heart pounded in his ears reminding him…he was alive. Until he bumped into her on the stern of the ship, only the swells of the open sea gave him a rush of passion.

His erection throbbed between them, and regretfully, she broke the kiss, stepping out of his embrace.

She reached up to touch her lips. “What the hell was that?”

“A damned fine kiss.” His chest rose and fell as he struggled to catch his breath.

She nodded, dropping her hand. Studying his face, her voice softened. “I don’t know what Bob put in those Drunken Pirates tonight, but wow. I’m impressed.”

He chuckled. “That kiss had nothing to do with the drinks.”

Her grin lit up the night. “Pretty confident for a pirate.”

“Aye.” He allowed his true accent to color his voice. “Haven’t ye heard? We excel at confidence, lass.”

“Damn.” She came closer, laying her hand over his heart. “You do make a sexy pirate.”

Except it wasn’t an act. She’d never believe him anyway, and he wasn’t ready for the night to end, so he kept the truth where it belonged. Buried.

Release Day Review! Don't Love a Liar (Dark Sins #2) Cynthia Eden!

I’ve been a criminal, a thief, and a killer. I’ve been the hero who rushes in to save the day. I’ve been the corporate CEO who runs the world. I’ve been everything.

I’ve been nothing.

That’s my talent. I’m a chameleon, I can become anyone, and I can do anything. I do whatever it takes to get the job done.

This time, she’s the job. I’m supposed to get close to her. I’m supposed to find out everything she knows about a killer who is turning Louisiana red with blood. Only Kennedy Clarke isn’t what I expect. Not the rich party girl. She’s scared, and lost, and she’s a victim in this tangled web. She wants someone to rely on. Someone who will help her when the whole world falls in flames around her.

She thinks I’m that guy. She’s wrong. I’m the one working against her even as I swear to protect her.

She needs to be careful. She needs to stop making me want her so much. Because the longer I’m with her, I’m not so sure what’s right and what’s wrong any longer.

Be careful, Kennedy. DON’T LOVE A LIAR.

Ready for a dark and dangerous romantic suspense? Be careful who you trust, and remember that no one is really who you think…DON’T LOVE A LIAR.

He’s been a criminal, a thief, and a killer. He’s the hero who rushes in to save to day and he does whatever it takes to save the day. Don’t Love a Liar ignites passions but also lots of emotions from readers as they try to decide whether Kennedy should trust this man, love this man or kick him to the curb. The characters are strong, vivid and readers easily connect to them as they try to decide who to trust. The romance between these two sizzle with lots of chemistry and has sparks flying as the pages heat up but this relationship has a big obstacle – Kennedy is a suspect and Remy is there to get the truth. Lots of emotional turmoil adds depth to these characters bringing them to vibrant life and ensuring that readers are ensnared by their story.

The fast paced and smooth flowing plot keeps readers biting their nails in anticipation of what will happen next as danger comes calling and Kennedy becomes caught in a tangled web of secrets and lies. Surprising twists ensure that readers can’t be sure of the just who is behind the killings until the very end. Once again, the author brings her story to life with well written words that paint brilliant images that make it easy for the reader to imagine and really get a feel for the characters and their emotions in this stirring romantic suspense.

Release Day Review! The Good Griffin (That Old Black Magic / Heart's Desired Mate) J.C. McKenzie!

He's a good griffin, with a bad temper...

Detective Damian Charming yearns to sweep a certain feisty lynx shifter off her feet. Every time he tries to talk to her, however, he sticks his foot in his mouth. He doesn't mean to sound condescending. Life would be easier if Lucy admitted he knows best, especially now that someone in town has threatened her. He's a good griffin (mostly) until someone messes with what is his.

She's an unlucky lynx with no time for trouble...

Lucy May hates Stillwater detective Damian Charming. Sure, he helped her with a horrible situation and has looks to rival the gods, but he also views lynx shifters as inferior supernatural beings. When someone targets the business she worked hard to create, though, Lucy turns to the one man she knows will mercilessly unearth the culprit.

It's more than just hex appeal...

When a hex sends the town in a storm of sexual shenanigans in the middle of the investigation, Lucy realizes just how bad she has it for the griffin. Now she needs to convince Damian her feelings are true and reel him in before his need for vengeance destroys the entire town.

The books in That Old Black Magic world and Heart's Desired Mate Series can be read as stand-alone stories and in any order.

He’s a good griffin with a bad temper. She’s an unlucky lynx with no time for trouble and in this delightfully charming story they cause sparks to fly, as they heat up the pages. Damian and Lucy are two strong, captivating characters that grab readers’ attentions right from the start and refuse to let go. The chemistry between Lucy and Damian is electric and the romance is sweet with quite a bit of turmoil as they become a bit muddled when they are around each other. This causes readers to break in spontaneous laughter and quite a few chuckles throughout.

The story is fast paced and full of entertaining events that keep the adrenaline pumping and the readers eyes glued to the pages so that they don’t miss a thing. Some of those events are fun, some could be serious but readers can’t help but smile and chuckle and some are tension inducing and full of suspense. There is certainly never a moment to get bored and readers won’t want to put down the book until they have read every last word of this story which takes place in a delightful world that makes a fantastic setting for the charming and quirky characters.

Release Day Review! Eye of the Eagle (Hotel LaBelle #3) Sharon Buchbinder!

One soars like an eagle. One strikes like a thunderbird. But for both hearts, revenge can be deadly when it's nourished.

Anomaly Defense Director and shapeshifter Bert Blackfeather doesn't need a boss with no experience. So what if she's beautiful or gives him a jolt when she shakes his hand? He never plans to get seriously involved with another woman—not in this lifetime.

Phoebe Wagner, an empath with psychometric abilities and an advocate for the deaf, gets more than she bargained for with Bert. One touch and she relives his IED injuries. So what if he's handsome and hot? She doesn't need to add his secrets to her own. Phoebe's are bad enough.

When his niece goes missing from Hotel LaBelle, Bert goes to Montana to help—and Phoebe insists on going with him. Can these two hard-headed people share their darkest secrets in order to work together? It may be the only way to save an endangered child—and their own hearts when Bert's past rears its ugly head.

This paranormal romance easily holds readers captive with the strong, compelling characters and the thrilling suspense. Bert and Phoebe have sizzling chemistry and their relationship slowly builds up steam and then bombards readers with lots of heated passion. The romance is sweet but full of obstacles that are both personal and professional including lots of emotional turmoil that readers can easily understand which makes it easy for readers to connect. Bert is a veteran hero and an eagle shifter and Phoebe is deaf and has some unique psychic abilities that add flair and intrigue to the story.

The story is fast paced and flows smoothly throughout with lots of adrenaline pumping suspense and excitement that keeps reads on the edge of their seat, while the fascinating mythological elements adds to the intrigue of the story. A missing child case becomes something more when the past comes back to bite Bert and magical happenings adds a mysterious quality to the story. Lots of tension and surprising twists has readers holding their breath with anticipation. Phoebe is quite a tough heroine which throws first impressions right out the window and adds to the excitement of this story although she does kind of steal the story in a way. The overall small town full of family also adds ambiance to the story and ensures that readers will want to visit Hotel LaBelle again to experience all the magic it has to offer.

After working in health care delivery for years, Sharon Buchbinder became an association executive, a health care researcher, and an academic in higher education. She had it all--a terrific, supportive husband, an amazing son and a wonderful job. But that itch to write (some call it an obsession) kept beckoning her to "come on back" to writing fiction. Thanks to the kindness of family, friends, critique partners, and beta readers, she is published in contemporary, erotic, paranormal, and romantic suspense--as well as textbooks! When not attempting to make students, colleagues, and babies laugh, she can be found herding cats, walking her dogs, fishing, cooking, dining, and laughing with family and friends, or writing.

She is the author of SOME OTHER CHILD, a mystery, DESIRE AND DECEPTION, an erotic thriller, and OBSESSION, a paranormal romantic suspense.

EXCERPT

Chapter 1

Catalina

I fought my way through the hallway of Mountain Rose house trying to dodge the children. Everything I ever read about my future brother-in-law on Herald suggested that Connor Rogan was a loner with no immediate family besides his mother and his cousin, Kelly Waller, who didn’t count.

Herald lied.

The gaggle of children was coming right for me.

I clutched my tablet to my chest and braced myself.

They ran around me in circles, giggling, and dashed down the hallway, leaving a little girl holding a stuffed unicorn in their wake. I let out a breath.

Rogan had oodles of relatives, scattered all over the Mediterranean, and all of them descended on his mother’s house to attend the wedding. I liked kids, but there were somewhere between twenty and thirty children under the age of twelve on the premises and they traveled in packs.

The last time I ran across this gang of preteens, they knocked the tablet out of my hands. Nothing could happen to the tablet. All of the wedding files were on there.

The little girl and I looked at each other. She was probably five and supercute, with brown hair and big dark eyes. She wore a pretty lavender dress decorated with tiny silk flowers. If Mom had put me into that dress when I was her age, it would be covered with mud and engine grease in about five minutes. When I was five, I either played outside or in Grandma Frida’s garage, while she repaired tanks and field artillery.

“Hi,” I said. “I’m Catalina.”

“Mia Rosa García Ramírez Arroyo del Monte.”

I had seen her before, I realized. She always seemed to follow Mrs. Rogan around. She trailed her to the porch, to the study, to the media room. She even wanted to sit next to her in the dining room.

Mia Rosa thrust her unicorn up. It was almost as big as she was and decorated with blue and silver plastic jewels the size of grapes and way too many sparkles.

“This is Sapphire.”

“She is very pretty.”

“She lives in the midnight clouds and her horn glows with moonlight.”

Of course. Jewel Legends. It was a popular kid cartoon with mythical animals. I was too old for it, but Arabella, my younger sister, caught the very beginning of it.

Everything had to be Jewel Legends for a while: notebooks, backpacks, phone cases . . . And then she went to high school and that was the end of that.

“I want a sparkly gun,” Mia Rosa announced in a slightly accented voice.

“Um, what?”

“There is a gun that lets you put more sparklies.”

“You want a bedazzler?”

Mia Rosa nodded several times. “Yes. My mommy said you were the go girl and I should ask you.”

Go girl. I hid a sigh. “I’ll see what I can do. What is your mommy’s name, so I know where to deliver the bedazzler?”

“Teresa Rosa Arroyo Roberto del Monte. Thank you. But don’t give it to mommy. Give it to me.”

Awww. She said thank you. “You’re welcome.”

She curtsied and ran after the kids, dragging her unicorn.

My phone chimed. I glanced at the text message. Arabella has written, “Where are you??? Get here!!!” and added a gif of a crying baby with photoshopped rivers of tears. I took off at a near run.

It all started with Nevada firing the wedding planner. The first wedding planner.

Usually my older sister was a perfectly reasonable person. Well, as reasonable as someone can be when she is a human lie detector. However, two weeks ago Simon Nightingale disappeared, and House Nightingale hired us to find him. Just three months ago our family registered as a House, and our small PI firm went from Baylor Investigative Agency to House Baylor Investigative Agency.

The Nightingale case was our first investigation. The entire Houston elite was watching us, and it drove Nevada a little nuts. A lot nuts. She was pretty much a nutcase.

The first wedding planner was fired because she argued with Nevada. My sister would explain the way she wanted things done and the planner would tell why they couldn’t do it that way. Most of the time “couldn’t” meant “we won’t do it because it’s a Prime wedding and it’s not the way things are done.” Finally, the planner explained to Nevada that it wasn’t really her wedding, but a wedding of House Rogan and she needed to stop impeding it with “ridiculous demands,” such as serving queso as an appetizer at the rehearsal dinner. The planner was promptly escorted from the premises.

The second planner was fired, because she kept lying. Her approach to wedding planning was to pacify the bride by pretending that everything was under control even when it wasn’t. She didn’t want to be micromanaged. But, my sister was an epic control freak and her attention to detail was legendary within the family.

Nevada would ask if something was a problem, and the planner would repeatedly assure her that things were fine, despite being warned that Nevada could sense her lies. Things came to a head when Nevada asked her point-blank if she and Mrs. Rogan had come to an agreement on the caterer. After being told for the tenth time to not worry about it, Nevada snapped. I realized that the second planner was let go when I saw her running to her car in five-inch heels with a look of pure panic on her face. My sister had burst onto the porch behind her, yelling, “Is it fine now? Is it still fine?”

We didn’t bother with a third wedding planner. Arabella and I took a weekend, armed ourselves with takeout, and after thirty odd episodes of Whose Wedding Is It Anyway? and four seasons of Bridezilla, we decided to plan the wedding ourselves. It was that or there would be no wedding.

Unfortunately, while Rogan and his mother treated us with perfect courtesy, the rest of his family wasn’t quite sure about our status. Both Arabella and I were registered as Primes, but our records were sealed. Also, our family wasn’t wealthy, and Rogan was a billionaire. With me being eighteen and Arabella turning sixteen, they didn’t feel we had any authority. I had a feeling we ranked as “poor relatives who run errands,” somewhere just above hired help. Apparently, I was the go girl. I didn’t even want to know what Arabella was.

Just what I needed. I already felt like a clumsy trespasser in all of this beautiful luxury. This wasn’t my home. My home was in the loft of the warehouse. If there was any way to not be here, I would’ve taken it. But I loved my sister.

It would be a lot easier if we could do all this in Rogan’s house, but Rogan and Nevada declared Rogan’s home a wedding-free zone and hid there whenever they could.

I turned the corner and walked into a room where Nevada stood on a dais, wearing high-heeled shoes and the in-progress wedding dress, which currently was muslin marked with blue pencil lines. Two people crawled around her, pinning the hem.

Arabella stood in front of her, her arms crossed over her chest. Both Nevada and Arabella were blond, but Nevada’s hair was closer to clover honey, while Arabella’s resembled gold corn silk. I was the only brunette in the family, besides Mom. Right now the similarities between my two sisters were really apparent, and if you didn’t look at their faces, Arabella seemed like a shorter smaller copy of Nevada.

Ooo, I should tell her that next time we fought. She would hate that.

“What is it?” I asked.

“She wants lilacs in her wedding bouquet.”

“Okay . . .” Nevada had said she wanted carnations, but we could stuff some pretty pink lilacs in there. I didn’t see the problem.

“Blue,” Arabella squeezed out. “She wants blue lilacs.”

No and also no. “Nevada . . .”

“I had to hide in a bush of French lilacs yesterday and they were very pretty and smelled nice. The card on the tree said, ‘Wonder Blue: prolific in bloom and lush in perfume.’”

I googled French lilac, Wonder Blue. It was blue. Like in your face blue. “Why were you hiding in a bush?”

“She was being shot at,” Arabella said with a sour face.

“So you stopped to smell the lilacs while people were shooting at you?” I couldn’t even.

“Mmm. I was in a greenhouse and they made a lovely hiding spot.”

I decided to go with logic. My sister was a logical person. “You asked for a spring wedding. You chose pink, white, and very light sage green as your colors. There is no blue anywhere in the wedding.”

“Now there is.”

“Your bouquet has pink carnations, pink sweet pea flowers, white roses, and baby breath.” Three varieties of pink carnations, because she couldn’t pick one. And Nevada would never know the panic in the floral designer’s eyes when we told her it had to be a carnation bouquet. Apparently, carnations weren’t upscale enough for Mad Rogan’s wedding. Poor woman kept trying to suggest orchids.

“And blue lilacs,” Nevada said.

“It will clash,” Arabella growled.

I googled sage bridesmaid dress, held the tablet toward Nevada, and scrolled through images. “Look at the flowers. Pink and white. Pink. Pink. White. Pink and white.”

“I don’t care,” Nevada said. “I want blue lilacs.”

And I want to fly away from here, but that wouldn’t happen anytime soon, would it?

“Anyway, I have to get back to the office,” Nevada said. “Text me if anything.”

“The queen has dismissed us,” Arabella announced.

I dropped into a deep curtsy. “Your Majesty.”

“I hate you guys.”

“We hate you back,” Arabella told her.

“We hated you before the wedding.”

“Before it was cool to hate you.”

“Get out!” Nevada growled.

I walked out of the room.

Arabella caught up with me. “We can’t do lilacs. It ruins the theme.”

“I know.”

“What are we going to do?”

“Sleep on it,” I told her. “Let’s go home.”

“Catalina,” a woman called.

I turned toward the sound. Arrosa Rogan, Nevada’s future mother-in-law waved at me from the doorway, from her wheelchair.

“May I speak to you in private, dear?”

Oh-oh. This couldn’t be good. “Yes, ma’am.”

“I’ll wait for you outside,” Arabella said.

ILONA ANDREWS is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.) They have co-authored two New York Time sand USA Today bestselling series—the urban fantasy of Kate Daniels and the romantic urban fantasy of The Edge. They live in Texas with their two children and many dogs and cats.
