Love and Other Wild Things
Love and Other Wild Things - Molly Harper

Mystic Bayou, Book 2

I Picked Up This Book Because: Continue the series.

The Characters:

Danica “Dani” Teel:
Zed Bearend:
Bael, Jillian

The Story:

I love this town. Mystic Bayou is a special place in many many ways. The story is well written with an excellent plot, a great romance and wonderful friendships. It’s not easy being the new girl in a small town but I think Dani handles it well. The thing I love about a series is that we already know about the world so less time can be spent on building and more time can be spent on the characters and we definitely get that here. Not only our main characters but more people in the town like the brownie in the Pie Shop (I can’t remember her name) and Zed’s mother.

I look forward to the next book in the series. I hope we still see a fair share of the sheriff, the mayor and their women.

The Random Thoughts:

Zed and Bael have one of my favorite friendships ever.

The Score Card:

Love and Other Wild Things (Mystic Bayou, #2)
Love and Other Wild Things - Molly Harper

I love me some Molly Harper, but this one was not one of my favourites.  It was good, just not as good as most of her other stories.  The characters in this one didn't click with me the way the featured characters in the first Mystic Bayou did, and I've officially decided that I don't like the dual narrative voices.  Both Amanda Ronconi and Jonathan Davis are excellent narrators, but when the book is told in the 3rd person, I'd rather just one narrator; in this case Amanda Ronconi.

And I categorically do NOT like having sex scenes read to me by any narrator, male or female.

The plot felt rushed; what would have been an interesting story if allowed to simmer and develop just felt like a non-event; a flimsy construct to prop the romance up in.  Harper's books always have a romantic element, but not usually at the expense of the rest of the plot; this felt phoned in.  So much so that even the humor felt absent.

Still, not every book can be a masterpiece, and Harper has written far more that's good than she has bad.  I happily look forward to her upcoming books and will read them with pleasure.  Though no more audio editions; printed editions for these from now on.

Definitely not a standalone
Six Impossible Things: Rhymes With Love - Elizabeth Boyle

If you want to have an idea of what is going on in this, make sure you've read from #3 and on in this series, this is #6. I read #3 in 2014 and #5 in 2016 and I could barely hang in there as it was in the beginning.

This pretty much follows the mystery set up in the books I mentioned, one of the bigger villains is pretty much already dealt with but while the other books dispatched of him, they also hinted at someone else behind the scenes, this is all about the hunt for that someone behind the scenes.

I feel like I've been complaining about this a lot lately, just my string of luck with picking stories I guess, but our hero and heroine had a childhood friendship, we get no scenes of it. Basically, she already has found him sexy and wanted him, while he is waking up to the fact that he, too, has always wanted her. I missed watching and experiencing the development of attraction.

Reading progress update: I've read 15%.- we needed mental candy floss tonight
Love and Other Wild Things - Molly Harper

While our political leaders compete for a Darwin Award in Westminster tonight, my wife and I decided to distract ourselves with mental candy floss. Molly Harper can be depended on for straight forward humour, even more straight forward sex and a dash of the supernatural.

Audio Book Review: Love and Other Wild Things (Mystic Bayou #2) By Molly Harper
Love and Other Wild Things - Molly Harper

I don't know why, but I simply couldn't connect with anything or any character in this novel. This book features a good well-paced story with somewhat interesting characters. It felt like something didn't click between me and this story.

Danica was a headstrong woman who knew what she wanted from the start. She was used to drawing a line in the sand and having people respect that. The "mystery" she was involved in was very janky and not set up all that well throughout the story. I liked her dynamic and eventual relationship with Zed.

Zed was a sweet and caring guy. It was a nice change of pace compared to the last few books I've read. Character's like him are few and far between, especially when most novels feature "alpha" douche bags as the hero. I loved how he respected her space but at the same time was straightforward about what he was looking for/wanted and how they could compromise.

The ending was sweet and predictable (which wasn't a bad thing for this story). I would have liked the secondary characters to have been more memorable and to play a bigger part in the story.

The Audio Book:

I disliked Jonathan Davis's voice for Zed on SO many levels. At times he made it hard to understand him in basic conversations. Amanda Ronconi chapters were fine as far as understanding what the characters were saying. I listened to this audio book while trying to fall asleep so I don't really remember her accents or if she even had to do any at all.
