Shiver - Maggie Stiefvater

For years, Grace has watched the wolves in the woods behind her house. One yellow-eyed wolf—her wolf—is a chilling presence she can't seem to live without.

Meanwhile, Sam has lived two lives: In winter, the frozen woods, the protection of the pack, and the silent company of a fearless girl. In summer, a few precious months of being human… until the cold makes him shift back again.

Now, Grace meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away. It's her wolf. It has to be. But as winter nears, Sam must fight to stay human—or risk losing himself, and Grace, forever. (source)

When Sam met Grace, he was a wolf and she was a girl. Eventually he found a way to become a boy, and their love moved from curious distance to the intense closeness of shared lives.

That should have been the end of their story. But Grace was not meant to stay human. Now she is the wolf. And the wolves of Mercy Falls are about to be killed in one final, spectacular hunt.

Sam would do anything for Grace. But can one boy and one love really change a hostile, predatory world? The past, the present, and the future are about to collide in one pure moment - a moment of death or life, farewell or forever.

My Thoughts

From the first book I was invested in Sam and Grace and most especially in the plight of the wolf pack of Mercy Falls. This third book brought us pretty much full circle without actually answering for certain whether the much wanted HEA would come to pass for the couple.

Cole was a big part of this book, more so than the last one and in a much better frame of reference finally as he tended to grate a bit on me in last story.

There were more tears, more drama and of course bittersweet romance between Grace and Sam which thoroughly cemented them as a couple one wished the best for.

Not the book I hoped for but one gets the sense Grace and Sam maybe got their Forever together so at least that is something.

Review: Lovely and Romantic
Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) - Maggie Stiefvater

This is one of those few YA paranormal books that actually catches me and warms my heart. I know a few people gave this book terrible reviews, but I saw a lot of good ones, too. And I sat out to read it for myself. Boy, was I happy I did. This book had me in tears by the final page.

I found Sam terribly tragic and sweet, doomed to a life he didn't choose. Grace was whimsical and obsessed, but had a heart of compassion and love. They made such a cute couple. The entire struggle to keep him human was bittersweet because they knew eventually they'd lose but they kept going, cherishing every second they had. I was pulling for them. There was no insta-love. Their love developed over years of watching from afar. More books need to learn from that.

The only issue I take with this, and most other popular YA books is the severe lack of parental supervision. Where the Hell are the parents?! Just out working, or being neglectful, I suppose. It's so frustrating since I couldn't do anything without my mom glowering over my shoulder when I was 17. She even watched me leave for work. She wouldn't go to bed until I was HOME from work, either, no matter how late I had to stay at the restaurant. I can't wrap my head around all these perfectly normal parents that just never come home. They aren't being abusive or forgetful. They just seem to think a 17 year old girl is completely trustworthy and independent. I don't get it.

Anyway, end of that rant. Not much of a review. Just some random thoughts on this book. I've gotta go get Jake from school. Later peeps.
