Time Salvager
Time Salvager - Wesley Chu

In a time where resources are scarce, what better way to generate new ones by plundering the past. I mean, it is not as if anyone is still alive to complain about it, right?

Meet the Chronmen, they travel back in time to 'salvage' these valuable resources, accompanied by armor that almost super-human, it is hard to remain with both feet on the ground. However, there are some rules. One rule is the most important of them all: at the end of the day everyone should be in his/her own time.

I like time travel stories, in general, but this was also a nice take on it. The characters are not very likeable, being arrogant and all, but it sort of makes sense in the light of the work they are doing. Time travel is dangerous. There are not many people who make it to their retirement.

The story was a fast one, and my biggest problem was that it felt like a set-up for the series. The real story only seems to start at the end of the book, almost forcing you to continue the series (which I planned to do anyway, but still). Either way, I'm curious to see where this is going.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Time Salvager
Time Salvager - Wesley Chu This was an enjoyable tale for the most part but it just seemed to miss the mark in terms of the story he was trying to tell. I guess I will have to read further in this as this one is definitely not the end of the tale. I hope the next one moved the story forward quite a bit and provides some more of the backstory on what the reasons are behind the action being detailed.

3.5 Stars for a decent story which needs further information to determine how good it is.

A SF/Time Travel/Dystopian Love Story that doesn't quite live up to the potential.
Time Salvager - Wesley Chu
Guess I should start with this: there's nothing in these pages that'll remind you of Chu's Tao books. They could be written by completely different authors. Which is a combination of good news and bad news.  The good news is that the reader doesn't get a deja vu feeling reading, Chu's ability as a writer and worldbuilder is displayed, and we get to see that he's not a one-trick pony.  The bad news is, the Tao books were better.

Not that this is bad, it's just not Tao.

Chu is really smart about the way that he introduces us to the world, to the concept of Time Laws, and ChronoCom and all the rest of the things that you can read about in the jacket copy (or at the link above). Maybe it shows that I read too much bad SF as a kid, but I'm still really impressed by SF writers who are able to blend things into dialogue and story rather than just resorting to info dumps.

This is a Time Travel story where the Time Travel's not really all that important. It's just a tool. Like a cell phone -- something that people use, but don't really understand.  No one (well, one person) here understands how it works, but they can use it.  Ditto for all the nifty future-gadgets.  So it makes it easy for us to not worry about it, too, and just go with the flow.

When you clear away all the bells and whistles this is a pretty straight-forward story about corporate greed, ecological/societal collapse, and a few people trying to do the right thing with the cards stacked against them (even if that pits them against each other).  The bells and whistles turn this into a SF/Time Travel/Dystopian Love Story.

Not the best thing I've ever read by Chu, but interesting enough to make me glad I read it, and I'll be back for #2.  Maybe with is he can do something to make the series something I can get excited about.

possibly not worth four stars, but james.....
Time Salvager - Wesley Chu

This book had its fair share of problems, but i enjoyed it none the less, mainly because of the main character, James and the crazy world that Chu created, then turned around and dropped of its head - changing all the rules! I enjoyed the change though, shook things up!

Most of the characters were interesting, but i found that there personalities were inconsistent and it bothered me. James on the other hand was so messed up no matter his behaviour i wasnt all that surprised, he was so tortured from years and years of killing people or watching them die that i couldn't help but form a soft spot for him. To me, he made this book, this book would only be worth 2.5 stars without him. I'll admit it took me a while to enjoy his perspective (well enjoy isnt the right phrase, but all i can think of for now) but in the end i couldnt wait to learn more about him, and see the world through his unique if fucked up prospective. Even now three days later i enjoy thinking about him, it weird, but i dont mind.

This is definitely a writer to keep an eye on! though he should fire his editor, cause they did a pretty piss-poor job, i even came across sentences that mid way through dropped down into the next line... for no reason, like someone had just randomly pressed 'enter' O.o and that wasnt the only issue! there was quite a few of them.

All in all pretty good. wish there was more james.
